The Fanbois on this forum are interesting. They seriously want to shut down criticism that doesn't fit their definition of acceptable. Funny thing is, I'm an Obsidian fan. You don't help people you want to support by blowing smoke up their arse. As a customer and supporter you tell them, and you don't mince your words, how bloody annoyed you are. If they choose not to listen, then fine.

I wish the panglossians on this forum would grow up. This game is, for me, dead atm. Soulless and devoid of charm. Wish I'd never backed it. So, yeah, I'm going to have my say. You don't claim to re-boot the IE games and come up with.... this. Don't tell me, "it's just a beta," this ships in a couple of months and most of these design decisions are fixed. All they can do is tinker with the deck-chairs on the Titanic. It's like promising to write the sequel to The Lord of the Rings and delivering Twilight.

Shill.

Fixed. This system meets some esoteric design philosophy I obviously don't understand... but pleases any number of beard-stroking geniuses out there in DesignLand, a mystical place where the design goals are met by squeezing every last iota of fun from something. Or as we say where I work, "you're hitting the target but missing the point." Edit - stuff.

Second impressions thread! [Build 278 version]

The ghost in the machine is the design philosophy, which tries too hard to be achingly hip and different for the sake of it. Let's have stats where all you get are bonuses Let's have a game where you don't need healing, turning it into a strategic meta-game Let's make a game where your tanks are lightly armoured acrobats Let's make a game where you can't make 'a bad character.' Well, at this moment in time the operation is a success. But the patient is dead. -

Have seen re-enactors in 3/4 suits of Milanese plate doing virtual acrobatics. -

I just think the lack of a mechanic makes fights pretty static, trench warfare if you will. I understand the idea underpinning the design decision Josh describes, I'm just not sure it adds to the fun as-is. -
Luridis, I'm not being confrontational, but your post could be taken as a wee bit patronising.

Taste is subjective, of course. I like photo-realism and find the BG1 ports (well, most of them) sort of kindergarten-ish. Some people adore them. * shrug * Viva la custom ports!

This would be very helpful.

I've got a smokin' hot Scarlet Johannsen port too, but I know the scowling SJWs on the forum detest any image that might betray the gender of the character depicted.

I didn't like the BG1 or BG2 ports personally, so I'm not that keen on these either. Here's one I like which sort of illustrates the style I prefer: I've had Arnie as a character in BG2 as well... This is sorta my thing too...

The Insane Beta Battles @ Crossing
Monte Carlo replied to swordofthesith's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I never think tank = fighter. A tank is any character configured to pull aggro / absorb damage so the others can do their thing to help the battle. Typically, in a six-character party, I would never go with less than two and usually three such characters. In games like BG2 these would be any fighter-class, multi-class and sometimes even monks. Am not sure about PoE yet, but the paladin, monk, barbarian and even druid look like they can be configured to step up and take their place in lieu of fighters. -

Not being able to kite is extremely frustrating. It lessens tactics and seems mainly to (a) be one of those Sawyerisms that fall under the 'strange-idea-of-fun' categories and (b) to mask fairly primitive creature AI. A 'retreat' function that allows you to back away but risk an attack-of-opportunity style hit in return seems fair, and better than what we have now. -
HP and healing potions. Working perfectly well since 1974.

Like others have said, combat is better-paced and far more playable. Encouraging. -
Is it just me or are there too many classes?
-
Perhaps, but you're worth it.

Are they even listening to our feedback?

Both of you are correct. Karkarov is technically correct, Sarex is correct in a coarser, more granular way. If I buy a pair of boots inspired by Timberland I expect something Timberland-like. Not a pair that perform better on a dance-floor than in the woods. I'm not going to read too much small print, because the guys told me they were like Timberlands, right? We can and probably will argue ad infinitum. But the fact is a sizeable bunch of people think enough 'stuff' isn't what they expected. The developers have not engaged with fans on these issues for some time. Were they more visible and willing to engage they could probably dampen this down with enough (but not all) backers who have (perfectly legitimate) concerns. -
My Orlan druid (who looks really cool) turned into a stag, then a strange noise happened and he started floating around a room in an inn like an ice-skater. Then he died. Please patch, come quickly.

Pretty disappointed, this launches in December?

So? This is PoE. It contains a boatload of stuff you wouldn't expect to find in an IE successor.
