Mishandled development
Monte Carlo replied to Malignacious's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
There's two reasons why people may not like the place - the list of preferred titles, and the undermoderation. I prefer undermoderation myself. The rampant Hitler-worship and Jew-baiting might have something to do with it too. I understand why you might not want to mention that.- 80 replies

Statism - the fundamental dysfunction of our world
Monte Carlo replied to Malignacious's topic in Way Off-Topic
He's a bot. There can be no other rational explanation. Some underground xtreme libertarians programmed a propaganda bot to spread the word, imbuing it with the warm and engaging personality of an adolescent politics junkie. -
Is Obsidian trying to rush this game?
Monte Carlo replied to ctn2003's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Bryy you might not realise it, but you and Lephys come across like knee-jerk Obsidian Praetorians, hurling yourself like over-eager bodyguards in front of any perceived sleight. I know you aren't a shill and you genuinely agree with a lot of what Obz does, but remember that doesn't mean the more critical members of the forum aren't similarly authentic. -

It's the internet. People need to watch the news perhaps, take a deep breath then come back and post about the delay in the release of a CRPG. -
Statism - the fundamental dysfunction of our world
Monte Carlo replied to Malignacious's topic in Way Off-Topic
Because anarcho-capitalism has been thoroughly analyzed and researched from all angles, it's rapidly growing, it's global, and there won't be any magical breaking point but gradual, orderly dissolution. Also, it's really not that hard to see the blatant, parasitic, destabilizing banditry of statism once you step out of its matrix. You have The Matrix and the Dark Enlightenment dudes have 'The Cathedral.' They also enjoy a rather nuanced version of BHD I think you'd dig. Your heroes and the DE types are also both cheeks of the same arse. -
BG2's quest placement was all over the place. That much is obvious, even the BG2 developers retrospectively acknowledged it. First time you play, it sort of hits you in a good way though with all the choice. Then it gets slightly overwhelming until you switch off your completionist gene (which some people can't). Dammit I've never done that quest with the red piece of cloth you get from the old dude in the graveyard. Ha ha ha. All I'm saying is that BG2 is great because of it's imperfections with quest placement, but that doesn't mean PoE will get anywhere by copying them. No doubt it will have its own happy quirks and unintended surprises.

Why is it that all these dudes look like they'll survive five minutes in their Brave New World of anarcho-capitalism? -

No, I really didn't. If you can't see why labelling an entire ethnicity as child-beaters doesn't exactly bolster your credentials as a forensic purveyor of political wisdom, then I can't help you. -
The problem with Twitter, especially, is the instantaneous nature of it. How many of those posters actually know anything about this story. Very few. They just jump on bandwagons.

OK, I was trying to tease some sort of extremist / racist stance out of you and it wasn't too difficult, was it? -
Also, online advocacy is a two-way street. Live by the sword an' all that...

By the spring people who played WL2, Original Sin and Dragon Age 3 will be up for a new RPG. I don't see a major issue. -
Twitter is a babel of stupidity. Ignore it.

Hey, Magnathingy, where are you on the whole Nick Land / Dark Enlightenment thing? -

I am Monte Carlo and I approve of this message. Win / Win. Edit - personally I think I'd wait until release, but if it mitigates the financials then I say go for it. -

Golden mean fallacy. Ah, fallacy, the internet's favourite rebuttal word. I note the website is like a debating society nerd's instruction manual, which is what you are. Try again, and perhaps read my post where you'll see that my argument doesn't quite fit your reply. -

I hope people get behind the developers 100% if this is true and give them credit for the decision. I'm a harsh critic of theirs sometimes, but I honestly think they need backing to the hilt when they do stuff like this that needs to be done.- 262 replies

No, it doesn't need moderation, they obviously like wallowing the sewer they've created. But as you say, I'm free not to go there. So I don't. I did have an account and posts there, as they do know their stuff and the coverage of old-skool RPGs is superlative. It's just a shame that I feel the need to shower after a visit. I'm sympathetic to the argument that free speech doesn't mean you can shout 'fire' in a crowded cinema - there are consequences occasionally when things go too far. But even this causes problems, as who decides? You? Me? Bruce? Anita Sarkesian? *shudders* Personally I'd rather mock the antisemitic trolls of the Codex* as basement-dwelling, mouth-breathing cretins than suggest they be silenced. They can shoot straight back at me, I can live with it and it bothers me not a jot. Is the answer that people need to toughen up and stop being such precious snow-flakes? It's not all of the answer, but it's some of the answer. * Disclaimer - I know and like some of the Codexians. I'm saddened they so seldom challenge some of the dregs they attract, but it's not my call.

Statism - the fundamental dysfunction of our world
Monte Carlo replied to Malignacious's topic in Way Off-Topic
I'm inherently suspicious of Utopianism of any stripe. I have libertarian sympathies, but libertarianism informs my politics rather than shapes them. The nation state is the least-worst system at this time. Liberal democracy is the least-worst system at this time. Capitalism is the least-worst system at this time. Libertarian values, in my opinion, are the best way to regulate these systems, while recognising these systems benefit the most without us falling into the thrall of Utopians of both Left and Right. So, OP troll, screw your reading list. It's written by extremists, be they Ayn Rand or Karl Marx, both cheeks of the same arse. Hey, I'm a poet. -
Agreed, the whole colour palette is a bit sludgy... I don't like primary glowing colours but a bit of brightness here and there wouldn't hurt.

Nappy-wearing mohicans manipulate an acid-puking mutant in a terracotta desert. In .gif graphics. And this is the guy who likes particle effects and rag-doll physics.

We need some sort of boob spreadsheet for CRPGs, a sort of targeting matrix for the staff at RPS etc.

LoF, Oby and this guy... the same genius is behind all of them. Let's see if he can do steely-eyed libertarianism properly.
