Actually I remember this being so much fun that I might do it again, but only in a party. Not sure how much the stacking of stealth and survival affects the spears' damage at lvl 20+ in the skills, but I remember it being pretty potent. I ran a variant of the Iron Hammer build that also stacked engagement, which spear helps with.

Ship fights and spread out mob fights where you can't use objects well for positioning (like inside Hasongo lighthouse) are really hard for me on a Tactician/Blood Mage, as when I can't use terrain and other tactics to group all the mobs to flank them, I run out of resources -- need to carry a ton of healing potions and use blood mage refill spells.

There is a mod you can add that spawns all the unique item captains without needing the rep. You can search forum or maybe someone can post it. Doesn't disable achievement. Otherwise just massacre everyone in the Undercroft and/or that guy's mansion in bottom right of Serpents crown to get the negative rep. Note the captain is like lvl 19 and spawns a ton of mobs on his boat, quite hard solo and/or underleved.

I posted about this earlier. When I tested it during Beta, the Elemental Bolts upgrade did not avoid the ACC penalty for Arcane Archer with Spearcaster. I saw it in the combat logs. The penalty was *offset* partially by Spearcaster's ACC bonus from Arcana skill, but that means you're not getting all the ACC you could be getting!

At early levels, just recast chill fog + combusting wounds + wall of fire on the grouped mobs. multiples of each. you can throw in the concelhaut siphon spell as needed for health regen, and supplement as needed with either offensive spells (fireball) or buffs (mirror image, spirit shield). Once you get spell shaping talent you can reduce the AOE size for more PL, also the +Pen spell talents help. Does anyone know if there is a way to make the AI recast Vigorous Defense when it runs out?

OK, thanks @baldurs and @guildwriter. I cleared the rest of the map first (couldn't find the manual for the machine). Then I went back and pulled / kited the imaginary friends pretty much back to the room with the Matauru, pausing only to put Gouging Strike on 1-2 following me. I was able to kite them 1-3 at a time this way and wear them down, solo. I had been trying not to kill any LIbrarians (I thought maybe that was a thing) and I also though the LIbrarians would turn hostile if you fought near them, but apparently (i) it doesn't matter and (ii) only if you attack them. So basically I kited and ran and wore them down. A bit cheesy. One would have liked a way to facetank the room. I also couldn't figure out how to do enough spike damage right at the start to eliminate the Child -- and when I had kept trying, it put me too close to the center of the room. So hit-and-run had to be the tactic; if you enter un-stealthed, they'll aggro on you close to the door. Still gotta find that manual for the machine, to make it easier on a subsequent run. EDIT: so it's located in the Catalog Room of the Central Stacks, which is the *other* area you can visit from the central area where you first meet the imps/Tayn/Llen ... so if you go there first, you can get the Manual before going all the way down to the level in the Collections with the Flesh Golums.

Any tricks or tactics for beating the Frightened Child? I've tried using the room's doorway to limit the number of mobs but they just overwhelm me (as they have LoS from within the room). I tried looting all the bodies first to see if that "disarmed" them before the child summoned them. Fighting outside the room seems to aggro the librarians, though I did flee back to the elevator and that seemed OK for fighting (near the elevator). The "Imaginary Friend" mobs all the mobs seem to do a lot of damage on PoTD. Also - is there a trick to operating the Flesh Construct Controller? I have over the Mechanics check, but every time I "reached into it" I got an injury ...i can't see how to get it to either make the contructs side with you or destroy them ...

I just tried a single-class Barb build against Jadaferlas (magma dragon) on upscaled solo POTD (@ lvl 20), and he killed me every single time. Using a morning star (fort debuff) didn't really seem to do much. I even tried to spam consumables (moonwell scolls, spirit shield potions, healing potions, adra potions to remove his injuries at 2+ injuries). Rev's Scortched Cloak, + fire AR items, etc. The build just didn't have the sustain (at least in my hands) to whittle him down while being hammered on by all the oozes he seems to summon. It could be a L2P (learn-2-play) situation, but at least to me it showed where the build can break down - vs. being very good versus lots of lower-hp mobs (with HoF). By the way, once you've enabled the console, F11 lets you pick areas to teleport to. I can't believe I only figured this out recently. EDIT: by comparison I geared up and tested a Pally/Streetfighter (Pale Elf) through simliar mobs last night (Hasongon, Ashen Maw). it performed a lot better -- much better on the "normal" mobs and even did take down Jadaferlas, though that was still quite tough. The magma dragon was made tougher by having insanely high armor something like 17-21 in most types, while my Pen with Amra (2H axe) was stuck at 15 or so (13+2 from hot razor skewers) and my backup weapon was Stalker's Patience with max'd stealth (even lower pen). Deathbows and crits did much of the work, but I had to stay alive long enough for them to kick in (Stalker's Patience will trigger with 0 recover on crits). On the flip side, with Gilded Enmity and Pale Elf racials and the same +Fire-AR gear as before, I was at like 21 Fire AR which really helped (except this time I didn't use Revku's cloak). Only afterwards did I figure out I should have used the Animancer's Energy Blade, so i went back and tried it again and it was a bit faster. Mode was basically run in with Amra and try to get the Frenzy/buffs to trigger, with Pally chant on +acc ... switch to shield/spear at ~50% and kick in the pally heal aura and Lay on Hands. You can get Flanked really easily at the start, especially using Escape to port in the middle of mobs. Riposte isn't bad on the build because with high Int you can get 5+ seconds on the +50 deflection after an Escape. It's a fun build. I think the Devoted/Golpact variant would feel less risky, for sure, with Refreshing Def, Unbending Trunk, etc. but I don't think the extra pen would make up for the -acc on non-devoted weaps and the damage you'd lose without deathblows/persistent distraction/cheap damage spams (Crippling Strike).

Best weapons in PoE 2
brasilgringo replied to msyoung's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I tried to make a an alchemy/poison stacking build to use this spell, but i couldn't get it to feel like it did material damage. Any tips? -
Cool, thanks for the input. I'm still trying to find that elusive facetanking high damage solo build....

Single barb build is neat idea, maybe you can post some tips Boerer. Wonder if there're a solo build that works. I suppose the devoted / goldpact is better for solo potd due to survivability? Throw on some heavy plate or DoC for resources? There was a "pirate paladin" build not to long ago along these lines if I remember correctly, need to go look it up. Race-wise giving up Pale Elf (+4 frost / fire armor) to Get the might bonus seems perhaps a tough trade... Have to think about how to get to 25 might with items I suppose.

Anyone know if this still is a viable POTD solo build in 4.0+?

I'm with the OP. I find consumables tedious. I'm much more of a face-tanker. One of the things I liked about games like SWTOR is you could face-tank a ton of mobs and still do good damage. The problem with POE2 is that it's hard to do on POTD (facetank, esp solo, and do *good* damage) without using consumables, and now after the patch (or at least during the patch) much harder on veteran. You end up needing consumables to stay competitive. I recognize what can be done with them (inc. scrolls - look at Electric Dyslexic build) but I don't have the patience for it. Hulk smash!
