  1. I personally wouldn't mind it. However, I think quite a lot of the pillars fans would be annoyed by it. Flipping between styles could definitely turn people off to the series... although i suppose if someone really liked the first person pillars it might open them up to crpgs. New Vegas kind of had that effect on me, despite not being patient enough for the old fallouts combat. I kind of loath prequels. perhaps if it's really far in the past but i don't think i want to play through the Waidwen Legacy. Sure it would flesh out the world but in the end you know how the story would conclude.
  2. I think if they make a fantasy first person game, it won't be Pillars of eternity... I can't remember where i read it but I think Josh wasnt entirely happy with the world creation due to lack of time to flesh it out. I love POE but id prefer them to keep POE CRPG and do something new in first person, if thats the route they go.
  3. I think we are kind of arguing in circles here. I suppose RDC could have made it to Ukaizo. Though the travel there even after the storms have stopped is dangerous. As far as the motivation goes I think that's just personal opinion. In POE1 i wasn't motivated to find Thaos. I can speak to dead people now? cool! personally I'd rather be able to speak to dead people than have my house destroyed and people close to me killed. A big part of the world changing was the storms stopping... because they stopped in Rauatai as well. Making a land that was plagued with storms now calm. So the Watchers role is not pointless, whether or not you agreed with the motivation. You saying "aside from Berath making me" is just like saying "aside from finding out why my soul was awakened" you might not like the motivation... does not mean it isnt there.
  4. I'm not the only one! I have tried to play both Divinities multiple times and something just completely takes me out of those games.
  5. Not having an impact on the ending is something that i can understand being annoyed by. It still doesn't explain why you think The Watcher has no motivation. Ukaizo is only able to be traveled to because you stop the storms. Eothas could still get there and he would still smash the wheel. However, no faction would be able to reach Ukaizo. You use your watcher abilities to shut down the storms through the adra.
  6. The Watcher is invested because he/she is forced to at the very least. You can choose to have your soul sent back to the wheel in the first conversation with Berath. By choosing to live, the watcher is automatically personally invested. You only know Eothas is going to Ashen Maw because you are a watcher. You talk to him twice with your watcher powers through the adra. The major flaw in your argument is that you say any watcher could do it, but what makes that new watcher any more invested than the main Watcher? This new watcher would be less invested as he/she didn't have her/his soul taken. Also the timing of the watchers death completely lines up with Eothas needing to be followed. You are dead so Berath has control over your soul. They would have to wait for some other watcher to die so they could hold their soul ransom. Not to mention the other watchers you meet arent exactly impressive.
  7. Nah i have friends just no nerd friends. I try to talk to them about this stuff and I can feel the apathy. Honestly... I'm pretty over open worlds. New Vegas is one of my favorite games... Also i loved kingdom come deliverance. but the percentage of open world games i've played, compared to how many i've enjoyed is low.
  8. The no revenge is true. Though it's hard to get revenge on a god that plans to destroy himself. To be honest the first time I played POE1 I didn't care about the main story until late in the game. I was more enjoying the world and story. Deadfire suffers from the open world problem most open games have. New Vegas made the main plot secondary to the world, so it worked there.... However, I can't think of many open world games that have a strong narrative. I do think it seems quite silly doing all the side quests given the circumstances. Though personally I am just as motivated by finding Eothas as i was finding Thanos. Only difference is that getting to Thanos, felt more natural than getting to Eothas. I think if they made a reason you couldn't get to Eothas aside from "not high enough level yet so its probably not a good idea" That issue wouldn't be an issue. I disagree that its the fault of the story though. It's more the fault of being to go anywhere, at any time. There are lots of dialog options that say "he smashed my castle" or "He must be stopped" or "Berath is forcing me to do this"... The world has a ton of good side stories, so if you dont like the main mission then play into it with the "Berath is making me". However, the motivation was never an issue for me. Only that avoiding the main mission seemed unnatural.
  9. I'm pretty sure Eothas actually says something like "I still have need of your soul but i can give you this much at least" not tenfold. Losing your castle, people you lived with, and most of your soul. Is quite the motivation. In POE you are tracking Thaos because he awakened your soul. I'd say those are quite close as far as wanting answers. I understand what you are trying to say, and i agree with it to a degree. However, you are acting like if a monster destroyed your house and took most of your soul, you would just go back to sleep. Berath chose the Watcher because he is tied to Eothas, already knows about the true nature of gods, has motivation(whether you think its good motivation, its still more motivation than anyone else), and is probably the only "world saver" that Berath had to choose from. OH YA. companions. I really doubt we will see durance as a companion. There are endings where he sets himself on fire. Would be weird to cut out a character from game 3, for not finishing the quest in game 1. I know you can technically have any of the characters die, but not just from failing their quest. Eder will be back most likely. He's your canon BFF. Maybe we will get another sibling from Maia/Kana. I get the feeling we will see Rauatai if we get a POE3. There are lots of opportunities with the Adra storms stopping in Rauatai. Land that was uninhabitable now ripe for the picking. San Palleginna maybe. Aloth maybe. Though honestly I could do without both of those two. So difficult.
  10. I'm replaying and i have no friends so this seemed as good a place as any to spew nonsense. I'm just starting deadfire(for the 3rd time) after playing pillars of eternity again. The tone of POE was very grim darkish Walking into the guilded vale and seeing the bodies hanging from the tree. Then you find out about the hollowborn crisis after the bell tolls. It really sets up what is a dark and tragic world where everyone is struggling. In Deadfire you wake up on a boat and are attacked by pirates. Then you go to a town where people are complaining about... something. They will help you if you help them. Then you're off into an open world. The world is vibrant and beautiful(the art really is beautiful in Deadfire). The factions are all surviving and don't really care about Eothas. There is no real tone to the game. Some are struggling of course, but it's not a universal suffering. I found the Factions well done, but by the end of it, they all just seem like dinks. edit: that's actually quite realstic come to think of it.... because in real life all the factions seem like dinks. The biggest problem with Deadfire is that it is an open world. Open worlds are fun, but it is hard to pace a story when you can go anywhere. I really wish there was an option (maybe new game plus) where you had the dialog option to just say "We can't stop him, don't bother." because that pretty much cures the feeling of "why am i doing these quests?" The thing about Deadfire, is that if its the end of the series... it is not a good game story wise. Though if there is a third game that wraps up the watchers story, then i think the story in Deadfire is great. It's a real middle episode of a trilogy type of game. It's setting up a world going through change, where people will have to adapt. I do love Deadfire but those are 2 things that i think POE did better.
  11. I'm pretty sure i made her stay with me when i supported VTC... Or was it the queen? I'm pretty sure you can convince her to stay... though im not sure exactly who i sided with when i made her stay. edit: Maybe you need to be in a relationship with her for that to work. It's been a while since it happened. I remember i was an Orlan so i thought it would be funny to hook up with the giant.
  12. I actually like when you try to do the right thing but it backfires. Gilded vale suffers without a leader. As they say "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" I was actually super surprised with my outer world's ending slide. I guess I made all the right decisions?
  13. Maybe Pathfinder is the last game I'll do that with. I played death stranding and gave up on that garbage very quickly
  14. Because that's how much I wanted to like it. A CRPG where you're a king? Sign me up. Honestly a lot of that was me finding out my character build sucked, so I started over. I mean it's better than me playing 30 minutes and saying it sucked. Yeah exactly. The game definitely had something that made me want to play. Just wasn't enjoyable
  15. I also hated Pathfinder. I put over 100 hours into it. I think I had fun for maybe 5 hours in total. Eventually I just started saving every 10 seconds, just in case I failed to disarm a trap, or I had a bad dice roll in kingdom building. My biggest problem with cRPGs is the need to min max... I know it's a big part of RPGs but it really takes me out of the mood when you have to drop your intelligence or wisdom or whatever down as low as possible otherwise your character will be useless. Really seems like a jack of all trades master of none isn't really viable in most RPGs... I understand that's just how things are, but Pathfinder kingmaker really takes that to the extreme. Also Pathfinder had very little "role playing". Quite like mass effect 2 it punishes you if you don't stick to one rigid alignment. I'm not a numbers person at all. I play for the story. The story of Pathfinder was far too busy, and I couldn't connect with any single story beat, as it was quickly brushed aside for a new story. I wanted to like it, I wouldn't call it a bad game... Just not for me.
  16. I had never played a CRPG before POE so I didn't know what to expect. But right when I entered the gilded vale and saw the tree with bodies hanging. I was fully immersed and had to know more. Its hard to say exactly what makes a good town or city, but I always like when things aren't as they appear.(gilded vale is a bad example) dyrford is a good example. There is a lot bellow the surface. Literally and figuratively .
  17. Outer world's wasn't what got Microsoft interested? That makes me very excited for the future of obsidian!
  18. Fair enough. Though they tackle it in a fantasy setting, so doubt many would be offended. Also they had backers, paying for that specific type of game. Also they couldn't afford anything other than CRPG, so that part was a risk they had to take. All that being said, I'm completely fine with RPGs playing it safe. As long as the story/writing is good, I don't much care about being innovative. Death stranding was a "risky" game... And I hate it.
  19. OP is obviously a really cool guy with no time for trolling. If super cool OP says it's bad, I tend to agree with him. Glad OPs not angry though. Else I'd be scared for Obsidian. Scary cool awesome OP nice post OP.
  20. I like POE/deadfire, but they didn't really take any risks. Though it's hard to take risks when you are one flop of a game away from bankruptcy.
  21. Fair enough. A good game is a good game. I still stand by it saying a lot about this year's games though. The good thing about this year is that a lot of the worst publishers have been bit in the ass by their shady practices. I want to play metro but I'm absolutely awful at FPS.
  22. It's a bad sign for games this year that a remake is on the list for game of the year. Disco is weird... I don't regret buying it because I like supporting smaller developers and they tried to do something different. I totally regret buying death stranding... I only have myself to blame though... I knew what it was... I guess I just hate having money
  23. Makes sense I suppose. Though I mean JRPGs are RPGs even though they don't really have any role playing. Disco definitely is a role playing game... I don't think it's for me personally... But it's definitely a role playing game. Player choice(and what seems to be complete freedom) and dice rolls = RPG in my opinion at least Side note I went back and played mass effect 1 and 2... Did not hold up at all. Mass effect 1 was just copy and pasted areas. Story was good but nothing amazing... And I actually hated mass effect 2 replaying it now. You basically have to go 100% rebel or paragon... If you mix then crew members will hate you
  24. From what you said previously, it seems like disco would fit what you like. I didn't play that much of it(because outer world's came out) but it didn't seem very hand holdy, wasn't filled with fluff mainly focused on the story. The game play was just dice rolls but if that's not cutting out fluff I don't know what is im curious specifically what games you like.
