Highly stylized, high profile role playing game.
Flouride replied to WorstUsernameEver's topic in Obsidian General
Aye, but if you look at the other open positions they ain't using AAA in those either. It pretty much comes out only when talking about applicants previous experience in games. But yeah, at this point, it's really just speculation. -
Could we win XP in multiplayer matches?
Flouride replied to Eriksharp's topic in Dungeon Siege III: General Discussion
How often does your friends lose HDs, also easily avoided by doing back-up save (on PC atleast) in case you are really that worried... Do they live in a rural area where Internet is down all the time? The game can be finished in 15 to 25 hours according to reviews, doesn't take a huge commitment if you ask me. Unless you play with some really casual players. But then again why would you choose someone like that as the host if you know how the multiplayer works. Maybe Nathan or someone could tell if it's possible for the host to send the save file to someone else in case the host decides to quit playing. -

If it's an iPad/iPhone game I just hope they port it on PC/XBLA/PSN as well at some point, since I don't have a proper cell phone to actually play games on Though "high profile" really doesn't sound like it's going to be a cell phone game, unless it's Angry Birds the rpg -
You can still make Thorton to be your Thorton and the choices you make actually matter in the game. Just because you can't fully customize his gender, face and name doesn't mean you can't fully play a role. And it gives the game more cinematic feeling when the npcs actually say your name instead of using different ways to circle around it (or leaving that out of the sentence...) After all the best crpg ever made PS:T had a named character whose gender, name nor face you couldn't customize at all.

New MCA blog post: On Project Directors and Lead Designers
Flouride replied to funcroc's topic in Obsidian General
Well, there was that tweet by Feargus: "Talking to Sawyer about stealth gameplay. Need to go back and play Thief and a Splinter Cell or two. And get AC2 finished." So you never know... Or is some other team actually working of Thief 5 -
You should be ashamed of yourself if you haven't played MotB. It's easily the best crpg since PS:T. I'm pretty sure NWN 2 + expansions will be dirty cheap on Steam sometime during this summer.
-
It doesn't but if that is your chosen occupation then it certainly doesn't excuse you. Nobody forced obsidian to get into the business of making sequels, but since they did they should effectively compensate for lack of technological familiarity. Naturally an indie crpg developer gets to decide exactly what projects they want to work on. Especially during the economic crisis which caused ****loads of people lose their jobs. *reality check* Sorry, thought we were talking about some make believe fantasy world there for a while. In the real world where most of us live in the publishers hold all the strings when it comes to AAA games. Not the developer. It's their dime, if they want Obsidian to make a sequel instead of an original idea Obsidian came up with, they (Obsidian) sure as hell will do as the publisher want. Or else they will be out of business in no time.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm really just that lucky that games don't crash for me. I've played Fallout: New Vegas for about 90 hours and I've encountered 3 crashes ( + few that were caused by my HDD). I don't remember KoTor 2 being all that buggy, nor NWN 2. I encountered like 5 different bugs while I played through Alpha Protocol twice and none of those bugs really bothered me that much. And maybe I'm just damn unlucky when it comes to BioWare and Bethesda games. I got stuck so bad in Mass Effect 2 after 5 minutes of playing I had to start from the beginning. I managed to walk on platforms I wasn't supposed to. Dragon Age 2 crashed at least few times for me during my one play through, I had quests that were impossible to finish. Yet, I never see anyone writing an editorial about the bugs in BioWare's games. Why is that? Bethesda, let's see...My cousin had to restart his Morrowind game after about 100 hours spent on his char, because some relevant charachter to the plot had vanished completely. Oblivion crashed multiple times for me as did Fallout 3. Not to mention all the other bugs I encountered while playing those games. Yet, I hardly ever see anyone writing an editorial about the bugs in Bethesda's games. Why is that? And most of all, why would the bug infested engine (GameBryo) suddenly turn into a perfect thing of beauty in the hands of a team that has never worked on it when the developers that have worked on it for years can't fix it. It's so damn cool and easy to throw **** at the indie developer and chicken out of throwing that same **** towards the gaming houses owned by big publishers. I would post that there, but I can't be bothered to register to a random site.

I get that, but that doesn't explain the complete lack of marketing initially. They did eventually spend some money on the marketing after the whole release date shuffle.
-
We need to get some co-op going when we finally get our hands on this game
-
Because there was no marketing. Not sure if the company they had hired for the marketing dropped the ball or what happened, but I remember them changing the PR company they use in US and after that we could actually see some marketing for the game.
-
Yes some complained about gadgets (really?), h2h (lack of block?, other than that can't really figure out what's wrong with it), stealth, boss battles (because they made a char that was bad) or about cover issues. But pretty much every damn review mentioned the shooting mechanics, which is pretty bad if your game is hybrid between crpg and a shooter. And I never planted all of the fault at Sega's feet... I specifically said the shooting mechanics hurted the game most in addition to the release date **** up and their lack of communication&marketing. Even you can't say that messing up with the release date the way Sega handled it was just fine in the eyes of gamers and media. Not to mention how much it hurt the ratings the game got since it was released after (not before like it was originally planned to) Mass Effect 2. Better marketing initially, keep the original release date and scrap the shooting mechanics that pissed off pretty much every mainstream gamer / reviewer and your average review rating is way above the 70% it got.
-
That is a little one sided view of things. The 'publishers fault' is not a new issue that comes about when defending obsidian games and frankly they aimed at AAA status but delivered a game that failed to even reach 70% on metacritic. I could certainly see reasons why sega would not be happy with obsidian. And what were the biggest complaints people had about Alpha Protocol? Oh yeah the fact that skills have huge effect on your shooting abilities which was mandated by Sega. And It was Sega that pushed back the release date not Obsidian. Was Obsidian supposed to market the game all by themselves? Yes, I'm sure Obsidian didn't perform as well as they hoped either. Like MCA said the a.i and few other things weren't as well implemented as they wanted. But the fact is that the shooting mechanics played a huge factor how people felt about the game. It's like Sega didn't do any market research at all. All they had to do was read enough Mass Effect / Fallout 3 (or Vampires) reviews to see how much people really like skill points effecting the actual shooter part of the game. I can't even imagine how much all the retarded videos about the shooting mechanics in the game hurt the sales. And it sure as **** didn't help that Sega decided to release game after Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell which some would consider the games biggest/only competition when the game was all set for release.
-
It's just speculation, but the next issue of these magazines will be full of E3 coverage. So the focus will be on Mass Effect 3 & Co. Considering that Square Enix has made a wise choice. I'm more curious why there are no reviews by magazines from other countries. Maybe their June issues ain't out yet. At least here in Finland the release dates for magazines vary from 1st of June to like 13th of June.
-
Not hardly a surprise there though. First they cancel Aliens: RPG leading to massive layouts and then they completely **** Obsidian with their mandates, lack of marketing (initially at least) and release date pushback on Alpha Protocol. How hard would it have been for Sega to come out early on with a statement telling they are pushing back the release date because they wanted to market the game more and were looking for a better release date. Instead they waited until the last minute and didn't give any reason which lead people to believe the game wasn't ready for release. And we've since learned that pretty much no one worked on the game after Sega decided to release on a more "favourable" release date. Not to mention the issue with patching AP. I wonder if anyone from Obsidian actually worked on those patches. Yeah, I don't like Sega. Too bad they release Creative Assembly's games
-
I don't mind it either. I can play it just fine how it is, but for mainstream success which they were aiming for that mandate was just retarded. Not to mention their cunning plan to push the release date after both Mass Effect 2 and Splinter Cell, but I won't complain about that any further I think I've said well enough about that decision prior to this interview...
-
Not very smart mandate by Sega.... Anyways thanks for the interview and for the translation.

Wut? (from the Google translation, thanks funcroc) Seriously? What the.... Anyone able to translate the whole article properly?

From their tweets I would say they went to eat there. Maybe they have bad restaurants in California Seriously though Eidos (part of Square-Enix) and Ubisoft have offices in Montreal. Any other companies? -
The standards vary from magazine to magazine and from region to region. For example if the Finnish magazine I subscripe to gave DS3 85/100 it would mean the game is good. Nowadays they rarely hand out points well over 90. Not sure about the German magazines though...

L.A Noire. So far it's been a good game and no troubleshooting on my xbox. Would love to see a crpg meets crimefighting game.
