Paper Mario is a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG.
They use the contemporary computer game RPG definition, which goes to include all of those games.

Jak kind of lost something when he started talking. He goes from being a spunky silent hero to being an angsty gen-Xer. Of course it does fit the setting of Jak II and with him having a gun. So, I guess I can appreciate the change.
3/4 view is used almost exclusively with 2D games. It's the same as Isometric perspective.
