Harsh Medicine bug
yoyolll replied to Windalar's question in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I have this bug, too. Reported here with a potential workaround: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/98409-resolving-the-harsh-medicine-quest-is-partly-bugged/ -
I really don't like this attitude of "other games have buggy launches, so it's not that bad". As a big fan of Obsidian, I'm no stranger to horribly buggy releases. But I hope that they realize that this reputation is not a good one to have. Especially now that they are pushing crowdfunding and pre-ordering so hard. Deadfire is the first and last Obsidian game I will buy before the several months of patching that are always needed for each one of their games. I know, I should've known better, but I loved PoE1 so much I couldn't resist.

IsnĀ“t 2 Reputation the maximum you can get with a companion ? I got the steadfast ally achievement and none of my characters is above 2. Or is this supposed to go higher and I am affected by this bug as well ? I believe the maximum is 4, but I'm not positive.

Yes, amoral, selfish, cruel, aggressive would be better ways to describe it. But pretty much every companion is empathetic and has a strong sense of responsibility and kinship. It makes it very difficult to roleplay a mercenary or pirate who's after money and power. Many times also the dialogue choices don't let you be selfish without acting like a psychopath. In order to accept some quests you often have to choose a benevolent or diplomatic option without any mention of payment for your work.

Companion relationship points seem to get stuck after a certain amount of time spent in the party. They work at first, but then stop reflecting the companion's reactions. This bug seems to be affecting all of my companions. I thought maybe it just took a lot to change the relationship numbers, but then I got the Burning Bridges achievement (maximum negative with a companion) with Xoti after desecrating a temple and the relationship page still said -1. I got the Steadfast Ally achievement (maximum positive with a companion) with Eder, but his relationship status is stuck at +1. I have also noticed Xoti freaking out at Pellagina right away. But after some time traveling with both of them Pellagina did the same to her. The interesting thing was that this conversation happened twice right after one another. As soon as the conversation ended, Pellagina started again right away. Same dialogue, same options, as if the first time never even happened.

I like the companions but I wish their quests were better. I wish they would have just taken some of the sidequests and repurposed them for companion quests. They were short and shallow in POE1 as well and I was hoping it would improve in Deadfire. The other issue, as others have mentioned, is the total lack of evil characters. Serafen and Maia are the closest and they're more like good people that act like a jerk sometimes rather than actually evil. What is the problem with making, for example, 2 good, 3 neutral, and 2 evil companions? Especially with the pirate theme, the evil party options are very lacking. I'm getting tired of my cronies giving me passive aggressive BS every time I do something bad.

No, of course people like you and me who are actually playing Deadfire, as well as the overall percentile are lying to themselves. The person who hasn't even touched the game and is basing the "general consensus" on a small percentage of cherry-picked Steam reviews is absolutely correct in their assumptions. 27% is not "a small percentage". And also, as I've said before, the import/history bug affects everyone and is 100% reproducible. You and everyone else has encountered this bug. The fact that you haven't noticed these bugs does not mean they don't affect you.
-
To those who have pointed out that PoE1 was in a similar state at launch: you're absolutely right, that's the whole point of this thread. Read the OP. I'm saying that this is following in the Obsidian tradition of releasing the game too early and fixing it over the next few months. Wouldn't it be great for their next game if they could fix it before release? A year from now, Deadfire will deserve much better reviews than it got on launch, but most reviewers don't go back to update their scores. If Obsidian delayed the game more and fixed these bugs before release, it could get that score it actually deserves. Right now, one of the main features of the game has multiple major bugs that are noticeable in the first five minutes. If I were reviewing this game, that would be a huge red flag for me.

I'm sorry, but if you haven't seen any bugs in 45 hours then you just haven't noticed. The import/history bugs are 100% reproducible and affect everyone, whether or not you had a Pillars 1 save. Not to mention the giant and growing list on the technical support forum as well as the subreddit. I'm at 25 hours and I've had countless bugs. Although the vast majority have been minor, there have been more than a few broken quests and main features not working (companion relationships, retraining, etc.).

At level 8, after going through every district of Neketaka and gathering quests, I had maxed Shady, Stoic, Clever, Rational, Aggresive, and Cruel, and had 2 ranks in Benevolent, Honest, and Diplomatic, and +1 in Passionate. I think soon I'll probably be +4 in all reputations, which kind of misses the point of the reputation mechanic in the first place. I'm not going out of my way to gather rep points or anything, just playing normally and choosing whichever option makes the most sense for my evil character.
-
I also had the other side of the Xoti-Pellagina fight, where Pellagina triggers it, play out twice in a row right after one another. I mean, the exact same fight, same dialogue, same choices etc. As soon as the fight ended the first time, she started again right away. Their relationship seems to be very bugged.

I agree. And the reviews reflect this as well. Nearly all of the negative Steam user reviews are about the amount of bugs, especially the save-game import bugs. I'm not sure how a lot of these got through QA. The import bug can be seen by a conversation with Eder in the very beginning of the game and reproduced 100% of the time if you chose any ending other than the night market ending. Same with the Orlan baby. And the companion relationships/reputations bugs also seem to be so widespread that I can't imagine it could be missed by a group of testers who played through the whole game. They must have found these bugs. Did they not have enough time to fix it? I love the game, so I'm pressing through. But my current playthrough feels more like a beta test than a $50 fully released game.

Well, it doesn't exactly "freeze". It takes away control and hides the UI, but nothing happens. I'm unable to move or open the pause menu with the Escape key, and the experiment never happens. I'm also unable to open the console with the tilde key during this "cutscene". The only way out is to force exit the game externally.

Aloth's Approval
yoyolll replied to Aldaroshka's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This bug is now happening to me with Aloth, Xoti, Eder, and Serafen. All of their relationship points have completely stopped responding. I think it's only a matter of time before Pellagina and Tekehu are affected by this as well. It seems to occur after a certain period of time spent travelling with each companion. Aloth and Xoti are both stuck at -1 (even after desecrating a temple and getting the Burning Bridges achievement), Eder is stuck at +1 (despite getting the Steadfast Ally achievement after a conversation with him), and Serafen is stuck at +2. Just FYI, there is a post on the Technical Issues forum about this issue: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/98246-bug-reputation-xoti-player-reputation-does-not-change-no-matter-what-i-do-towith-her/ -
Harsh Medicine Bug
yoyolll replied to yoyolll's question in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
This person has detailed how to trigger this bug and a way to avoid it: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/98409-resolving-the-harsh-medicine-quest-is-partly-bugged/ Can't close out the quest without picking another ending, however. So if it took you a while to realize it was bugged, it's probably not an option to reload. -
Dispositions
yoyolll replied to The Sharmat's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I believe this is due to this bug: https://forums.obsidian.net/topic/98246-bug-reputation-xoti-player-reputation-does-not-change-no-matter-what-i-do-towith-her/ I have the same thing. Relationship points for each companion, sooner or later, seem to get bugged and stop changing no matter what you do. -
I agree with this sentiment, but the sheer amount of bugs I encountered right at the beginning of the game is not justifiable. Also, I've broken several side quests that take place in Neketaka, the largest city and quest hub. I know a game of this size and complexity is always going to have bugs, no matter how much money you put down for QA. But, for example, the save import bug that seems to affect everyone who made Eder mayor of Dyrwood, or took the Orlan baby with them, should never have been missed before launch. These are bugs that are verifiable immediately at the start of the game by a simple conversation or look around the starting area. It's baffling that something like that was able to slip through the cracks. And you can see that this is reflected strongly in the reviews. If you filter the Steam reviews by negative and most helpful, you can see how many people are upset by this. I can't say I blame them, it's a bad way to start off a game. I know Obsidian will fix 95% of these issues. I just wish that they would break out of this pattern of releasing games with tons of bugs and then fixing them slowly over the next few months. It's happened with literally every game they've developed (except maybe South Park, only Obsidian game I haven't played yet so I can't comment).

This is happening to me with Aloth, Eder, Xoti, and Serafen. So far, Pellagina and Tekeho are working as intended. I'm not 100% certain of this, but my theory is that when you recruit a companion, the relationship points work as intended for a while and then become unresponsive after a certain period of time. Another interesting thing is that I was able to get the Burning Bridges achievement (get maximum negative relationship with a companion) after I desecrated a temple and Xoti got angry with me. However, she was still stuck at -1 on the relationship page. I thought it might have been a visual bug, but then she didn't seem to respond any differently to me after that incident. I thought Eder would be angry too, but his number got stuck on +1 permanently. So I'm not sure what's going on, but something is definitely not right.

Is this quest supposed to continue after you give Pitli the medicine? I snuck into the back of Ernezzo's shop and stole the medicine without talking to him or the Spindle Man, and then brought it to Pitli. The quest journal says "I gave the medicine to Pitli. She and the sick Roparu are recovering.", but the quest remains open in my journal with no new objectives.

I'm having this issue as well, specifically with Xoti. I'm in Neketaka and the little dialogue box image pops up on her portrait every once in a while. But when I click on it, she just goes into her regular dialogue, and I can't advance her quest. A few minutes later, the dialogue box pops up again.

After those first two, negative reviews sorted by most helpful: https://imgur.com/MDATogK https://imgur.com/EPwUuh2 https://imgur.com/ANGVk1d https://imgur.com/AO5f4JC Almost every one is about bugs/crashes. And after what I said in my last post, I'm starting to agree with them. Between that post and this post, I managed to break Dereo's first quest. And now I'm pretty sure Aloth's, Xoti's, and Eder's reputation points have all stopped responding. Serafen and Tekehu are working. Not sure about Pellagina.

I'm about 20 hours in now. I can say, for my game at least, I've been consistently encountering bugs throughout that whole time. Most can be fixed by a simple reload, but some have caused quest problems that I couldn't get around. Judging by these forums and the subreddit, it seems I'm not alone. Off the top of my head, I managed to break Harsh Medicine, Food for Thought, and the feuding families quest in Queen's Berth. I also didn't realize until much later that both Eder and Pellagina did not receive the correct endings from my save game transfer, or that there were supposed to be punishments/boons from the gods (I pledged to all of them and went with Skaen cause I'm a jerk). And I found out you were supposed to have Whispers of Yenwood and the reforged sword from Caed Nua if you did those quests. Didn't have either in the captain's room. I'm thinking of stopping my playthrough and restarting in a month or two after most of the bugs get ironed out. I love the game, but it's difficult to keep going like this. I feel like I'm not getting the experience that the developers, designers, and writers intended.
