Articles, Tutorials, Rules, Etc.
I figured this would be a handy thread to have (and I searched, but couldn't find one) for all aspiring Game Designers. Post any interesting articles on game design here so we can always find them again. I'll kick off the bat (pretty sure this is not an expression and I am committing animal cruelty here) with The 400 Game Design Rules Master List. It's unfinished and some entries are vague or useless, but some of these tips are very useful and things that Game Designers may want to keep in mind. http://www.theinspiracy.com/Current%20Rule...ster%20List.htm

Dave Grohl strikes epic blow for taste...
Let that be a lesson to you.

Now, that's close to a personal attack. Let's play nice. (Also, the latter.)

Dave Grohl strikes epic blow for taste...
How literally am I supposed to take this?

So you want to work in the video games industry...
This column is about screenwriting but I think it pretty much comes down to what these types of "reality check brick to the head" things are for - seperating the "man, I love playing video games, how hard can it be to make them?" people from the truly dedicated and determined. Most of them don't work well enough, I think. I know far too many ex game design students who only realized how hard it was going to be after two or three years.

I think the Foo Fighters are fantastic. Can't stand Nirvana though. >_ (Grohl's drumming for Nirvana was ace, though.)

So you want to work in the video games industry...
Not even if you change all the names?

Dragon Age 2
Yeah, I know about the vocal minority thing but that's always been the case - same thing for game critics having "other reasons" for giving high scores. Even so, I don't think it's ever translated into such a big gap as far as I can remember.

Dragon Age 2
This might have been mentioned before, but did anyone look at the Metacritic scores for this game? Critic scores average 8, user scores average 4. Never seen a difference that big before for a video game. http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/dragon-age-ii I haven't played it myself, but I'm interested just to see what would cause a split like this.

So you want to work in the video games industry...
That's true. "Cool" isn't all that cool to me. I wouldn't be here if it was. EDIT: This sounds a lot more offensive than I mean it to be. : /

So you want to work in the video games industry...
It doesn't sound so much shallow as old fashioned. Gaming is "cool" now, remember? Well, maybe not the type of gaming that is usually discussed here... Anyway, I know a bunch of girls who are game developers or studying to become game developers, and most of them are attractive and at least none of them are dogs. Some of them do the anime T-shirt thing though, but that's it. EDIT: As for working in the games industry, I suspect it works better for some personalities. Personally, I need tight deadlines and high pressure. I don't only work better with them, I can't even work at all without them. (Bit of a personal epiphany for me there... huh.)

We are not alone
You know, our community is weird. I've seen flame wars over movie opinions, people get ecstatic over, not even video games, but video game patches, but (alleged) evidence of life in outer space is met with a resounding "So?" NASA distances itself from claims.

Is... *nothing* sacred?
Honestly, I kinda liked Indy 4. It had some stupid headslappy bits, but I get where they were coming from and to say the least, the movie sure entertained me. The Indy flicks were based on crappy serials, and then twenty years later they make one that's based on crappy serials twenty years later (specifically terrible sci-fi). That MacGuffin didn't bother me. Just the awkward pacing, oversaturated colors, special effects that me and my fellow animation students found downright disrespectful (it's like they didn't even care) and ridiculous dialogue. If they had gone with Darabont's draft (which is I believe still available on the web for those interested, confirmed as the real deal titled Indiana Jones and the City of Gods) and took the effects and cinematography seriously, I would have seriously adored it, nuked fridge and all.

Is... *nothing* sacred?
Then who am I supposed to be?

Is... *nothing* sacred?
Oh dear. Someone is making a sequel to a great movie. I guess that will just be a small pang of "too bad they screwed up the sequel" every time I watch the original. I guess I'm going to have to whine about that small discomfort on the internet and blow it up like it's a life changing negative experience.

Why not give bums the option of euthanasia?
Plus it would leave John Parish free to work with more interesting artists. That's what I wanted to convey with my earlier post, with the friendship bit. Most bums they just, well, live their lives just like we do. It's not the standard life we're used to, but to them it's just day to day living just like us. I knew a bum who was lots of fun to hang around with, eventually died of natural causes in his sleep at a ripe old age. Just lived his life differently, 's all.

I second this. Actually, only partially. See, I was laughing my head off while actually watching it, but afterwards ideas and images kept creeping into my head and it kept me up the whole night.
