From Kotor 1, Revan and Malak disappear after the Final Battle of the Mandolarin Wars. So I believe that Malachor 5 had a Star Map or a reference to the Star Forge pointing to Dantooine. Darth Malak does say that they went to Dantooine Ruins first in their search of the StarForge. That is a part of the Ds Ending for the Kotor 1. Dorak said that Revan and Malak were rumor to have appear at planets but never confirmed. Btw there is a few Month gap between the battle at Malachor 5 and Beginning of the Jedi Civil War.

Palpitine and Maul are True Sith by Training and Sith Training is their only source of training. Vader, Dooku, Revan and Malak are Sith Converts. Technically they are Dark Jedi with Sith Training. Dark Jedi study both sides of the Force and they embrace the Dark Side. Sith(Dark Jedi with Sith Training) are typical FLY thru the ranks of the Siths. Sith(those without Jedi Training) are very dedicated to the Dark Side and they pride themselves in their hard training. So They are always in constant competition with Dark Jedi and other Sith. Freedon Nadd and Exar Kun had more Sith Knowledge than Revan or Malak had. IT doesnt mean that Revan or Malak are no less deadly than those two.
