Recent Isareli military action in Gaza
SteveThaiBinh replied to Killian Kalthorne's topic in Way Off-Topic
And then some. Do we still have troops in Cyprus? In any case, Obama has said his main focus will be Afghanistan, and if he manages not to get bored and wander off to Iraq or Iran, he might even have a chance at success, or at least, making things somewhat better than they are now. Definitely the British should be in there giving what support we can. But we're not on the same wavelength, and I don't see, in this case, the value of pretending that we are. I don't think Israel is unreasonable in attacking Gaza, though I'm not sure it's wise, but I certainly don't see why the UK government should tie itself to the Israeli government's position. It creates problems for Hamas, and increases the risks for them of pursuing a military strategy. They don't want to be seen to be killing peacekeepers. Pessimist. The end is quite easy to see, though very hard to get to. -
Photosynthesis? You mean like Zombie Triffids? Now that's scary. Do they have stings and inexplicable control over satellite weaponry?

Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl, and Christoph Probst. I had never heard of them or the White Rose (despite having studied Nazi Germany for A-level history), until yesterday when there was a movie about it on TV. I can't imagine the courage it takes to stand up and be heard when you have no weapons and no way of fighting back. "Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just do not dare express themselves as we did."

Context is a vital part of language, of course, and it's often difficult for non-native speakers of a language to catch the hidden meaning behind the actual words we say. A classic example is the following conversation between a husband and wife. What does each utterance actually mean? Husband: The baby's crying. Wife: I'm in the middle of the ironing. Ruling the world requires a Lingua Franca, at least among the elites, and taken over a generation or two it's not that difficult, once a nation is conquered, to produce a bilingual ruling class.

Surely it's always Christmas at Disneyworld? I taught a group of students who were in a state of depression following Saudi Arabia's defeat by Oman in the final of the Gulf Cup. I said, "It's only a game" and got some very dirty looks in response.

I contributed to this campaign, and while I can only speak for myself, I was not motivated by hatred of religion or the religious. Secularists, humanists and atheists are from time to time blamed in the British press by commentators and religious leaders for a variety of ills with little or no opportunity to reply, and I think this was a reasonable effort to get a dissenting voice into the public arena. There are no services to advertise, though the BHA is getting some publicity and welcomes new members. It's asking people to think, that's all. Call it an awareness-raising campaign rather than an advertising campaign, if you like, but legally it has to go through the same systems and procedures. Encouraging people to reflect on the nature of life, the universe and everything is a service to the community. The campaign wasn't asking for money. It wasn't doing anything other than asking people to think. The choice of wording for the campaign was tricky, I gather. "There isn't a God." would have gone beyond what humanists believe, and "There almost certainly isn't a God" would probably come up against advertising standards regulations. I would rather have seen something like "There probably isn't a God to help us, so let's help each other.", but perhaps that's a bit preachy.

In the FAQ, specifically. I don't believe you need any particular driver to run it, other than the latest driver for your particular graphics card.

Ooh, interesting. I don't remember seeing that before. I honestly don't know how shipping to China works, and would be interested to know more. I know from trying to buy things from Saudi Arabia that a lot of sites won't sell outside their small geographical area. It helps to have a bank account in the UK or US, even if you don't actually live there right now, or to get someone who does to buy it for you and send it out.

What? I wanna be a girl
SteveThaiBinh replied to babydol's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Customisation is a good thing, and I wish there were an option to play a female character. However, if Obsidian are going to remove that option, fine, they'll just have to make up for it in other areas - like story and characterisation of NPCs, for example. -
I think the last game I played for longer than 12 hours straight was The Sims.

Australia to Resettle Guantanamo Detainees
SteveThaiBinh replied to Guard Dog's topic in Way Off-Topic
Would the plan be that Australia (or other country) would keep them in detention, put them on trial, or release them (presumably without passports)? -
I'm also a fan. It's surprisingly entertaining to get soundly defeated and end up fleeing for your life. I'm playing Re-install Windows And Hope It's Not So Crash-Happy This Time. My suggestion remove all startup apps except for virus protection (modern apps love to add start up applets which in the end are pointless and cause issues. If you see more then 6 icons near your time there's a issue) and do NOT use Symantic suites, and use the latest drivers. Hope that helps. Thanks. Alas, it's started crashing as I've been installing Windows clean, so I think either there's a fault with my Windows disk or there's a hardware problem. I've taken it to the shop to be checked.

I'm very optimistic, too. It seems lots of people and developers have different ideas for how to take the RPG forward, so we should see a lot of experimentation and variety. I'm even feeling good about the future of adventure games. Maybe it's something in the water?

There's a new book about LucasArts out called Rogue Leaders. The review on Adventure Gamers mentions as something that existed but hit the cutting room floor. Of course, we knew that an in-house LucasArts team was working on Kotor3 and the project got cancelled. The review is more interested in adventures and doesn't mention whether the book has more detail about this, but if someone comes across a copy, it might be an interesting read. I wonder if there's anything about Kotor2...

The Prince of Persia experiment is interesting. Having announced it as such, I suppose the publisher has an obligation to reveal its sales figures, and we'll get estimates of torrent downloads as well. We'll also need a control DRM-loaded game for comparisons.

A lot depends on whether they can take their story idea and go somewhere original with it. I getting a bit sick of secret societies. Dreamfall: Chapters? No time soon. I think Tornquist is busy doing a MMORPG.

26.4%, which is good, because it reminds me there are a lot of great films out there that I still haven't seen and can look forward to.

I think the fact that homosexuality is illegal (and punishable by death) in several countries is a bigger issue. A UN declaration on LGBT rights is still a long way off.
