It'll be hilarious- for a certain definition of hilarious- watching some of the usual suspects contort themselves into justifying the US invading Mexico, or Canada, or Greenland. In particular Kallis/ von der Leyen. I'm not sure even invading Denmark would be enough for them to grow a spine. Giving any sort of justification for invading a country for 'regime change' is incredibly short sighted because even if you say it's a special case every other case is also special, to someone. Recent history is littered with such short sighted stupidities. It's even worse when it's Donald Trump, a man with an enormously fragile ego and an obvious need for a capital L Legacy. You don't need articles like the one above to know that Venezuela will not be a special case. This is how you end up with Iran, Brazil, South Africa and a dozen other countries with nuclear weapons; and they'd be entirely justified in it. You can kind of understand someone like Zelensky cheerleading it despite the potential... implications, for him. A willingness to justify it from Kallis and von der Leyen and other members of the- and it really is a laugh out loud designation at this point- Rules Based Order while not at all surprising is as stupid long term as their abject surrender in the tariff war. Same as for Netanyahu all you're actually saying to them is that you're fine with them doing anything, so long as it's them doing it.

Truly worthy of a recipient of the FIFA Piss Prize.

I wonder if anyone has told Trump just how bad Venezuelan oil is? Canada's tar sands aren't great, but they make the vast majority of Venezuela's stuff look like light sweet Brent comparatively.
-
Not anymore, according to Lavrov anyway
-
What do Iran, Venezuela, and Nigeria have in common? Oil production of course. Drugs, dictatorship, and terrorism are most likely a smoke screen.
-
Isn't she in Russia?
-
So the Venezuelan VP is willing to work with the US, according to Trump.
-
How should we protect them? If america is good at one thing, then it's war. Man, Bush still had to invent a lie to get congress to sign off on hostile actions. Trump is just doing it and nobody says anything. The military follows every order, congress isn't even being asked. There's no democracy anymore in america. I'm guessing the midterms will decide the faith of europe as well. If the GOP wins everywhere again, we're in quite some trouble.

eu love to give speech about moral not sure they will actually protect canada or greenland if usa really push on the issue their action in entire 2025 are less than inspiring

You would think Thune would at least have called the White House to tell them "You didn't think we have enough problems going into an election year as it is?". With the capture of Maduro it is in effect what Putin had hoped to achieve with the Desantnik at Hostomel. However I kept telling this to anyone who would listen that destroying the legitimate political leadership of Ukraine and shattering its conventional military was always going to be the "easy" part of the "SOM" and that even prior to 2022 the Russian military was not at all prepared to handle a counter-insurgency against a hostile population. Now can anyone picture the US voting public wanting to spend a single dime on an actually earnest and dedicated nation-building project in Venezuela?

Some evil hearts will spin this story as Trump having done this to bolster Russian economy, as China is now more dependent on Russian oil.
-
Let's see, mass murder: check; piracy: check; kidnapping foreign presidents: check. ##### is racking up quite the crime spree.
-
Is always a concern, Americans only comprehend force and will until they get their teeth kicked in. Oil is a large part of the economy here, Canada never focused on developing resources though instead of just selling it to the US.
-
Was poking fun at some people here. Not really serious. I doubt they can switch from Canada that fast as pipelines beat boats for delivery and it's not like Canada is propped up by it's oil industry (as far as I know).
-
Colombia may not go down the same way, and Trump hates hard work. Canada is trying to pivot to EU, but I guess China is more likely.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/c5yqygxe41pt?post=asset%3Aea9f1475-6c65-4930-8370-04be588ee845#post Oh wow. This is a first time a US president just right out said they did it for the oil... Wonder how Canada is going to survive this shift in oil export. Maybe sell to China? Also a good chances that the rest of South American countries start arming themselves as fast as possible after this. Wonder who they will buy their weapons from?

Maduro didn't get in power without support (from politicians, officials, judges, military etc.). And those that supported him and his questionable leadership, most likely will not suddenly want in power members of opposition that they have persecuted. Member of opposition are now boldened and they will see that this is their opportunity to cease the power. It also seems that Venezuela's armed forces are divided of who they want to support. So the likelihood of civil war is high. There are also those actual drug barons in South America that see this as opportunity to have their puppet in control.

Ah , the rules based order. Trump saying the US will run the country, heh. Given they took no fire, guess they negotiated it with underlings? Well if he did, who would stop him? And you'd cheerlead that, anyway.
-
So the US will occupy Venezuela, this wasn't a hit and run. Will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of weeks.
-
It's already the plot of the first Rack Ryan movie, the one with Harrison Ford
-
He will get sentenced and then in a few month will buy himself a pardon from Trump. First Trump will need that juristic victory, then he wants the money. It's a win-win for him.
-
that could be plot for a good movie not so fun when it become reality
