What does anyone even know about this Ydwin other than one picture?

Why do you care so much?

Tbh we know her backstory which is very interesting but the sad truth is that most people went ape**** about her for fapping reasons :(

Okay let's take a moment to be fair and insert some perspective.

People were excited for a number of reasons.

  1. Her design, regardless of however many people will swear up and own it is "anime", is actually very good.
  2. Her background makes her out to be one of those potentially crazy Edwin type characters which was really absent in Eternity 1.  Durance is really just a self absorbed ****, and Hiravias is just a horndog.  Neither are really that slightly crazy, but definitely evil, mix.
  3. She is the only pale elf team member of any variety, and lots of people like pale elves.  No, mercs you hire at the inn don't count.
  4. She is the only person who can be a rogue at level one other than Eder.  Unlike Eder, it actually makes sense for her to have rogue levels.
  5. This is potentially the biggest reason for those of us who care about the lore of the game, she is the only party member option from either game that is actually an Animancer.  A profession you REALLY should have had represented in Eternity 1's party, since most of your team didn't care, or was against it.  In fact, was anyone other than Pallegina pro animancy?
  6. Yes, promancers wanted a female elf option.  Get over it :p

So yeah, there are some good reasons people liked her as a character and wanted her to be more than a sidekick.

1-5 points were the things that made me think she is the most interesting among the sidekicks (or even the new companions) but I didn't go crazy about her. It's just basic info. None went crazy about any other sidekick :p

And let's be honest, most of the comments had to do with her looks mate :p

So basically... most of the backers are horny teenagers.

She was described in enough detail to give people an impression on what kind of character she was but left vague enough for people to fill in the blanks however they want while her picture made her look 'cute'.  If she had been fully fleshed out companion you probably would have seen a lot less support for her as she ceased to be whatever people wanted her to be.  It's the 'potential' for her to be what people want that they like I feel, not necessarily what she would have been.

Nah, just those who commented about her looks during her reveal update and those who demanded(-ing) an upgrade for her to companion; which were the most among those who commented in general during that update :p

There are also horny anime geeks of all ages :p  Another point they made about liking her - she looked animesque ;)

I did. And I'm shure others did too. But unless the horny teenager or anime or "I want an evil but cute girl" fractions the "I just don't want it to be your average teenager stuff"-fraction is a comperatively quiet one.

"People like pale elves"

"People like Animancers"

"People want a female elf romance option"

So people want to **** underage gothic girls. Now that is something new. Never seen that before. You know that there are porn sites on the internet?

Oh and don't compare that to Edwin. Shallow and comical as he was, he was no cute teenage drow necromancer.

She was an anime character dangled in front of people for money. She was designed to make people care. Plus the concept of a death obsessed animancer is a really good one for this series, especially considering how badly they've handled animancy up to now. The only way they can really rescue it, outside the metaknowledge sense of "well 19th century mental healthcare was terrible too, but look where it's got us!" is to give people a look at the positive side of animancy and the best way to do that would be to make one travel with you. It's a shame we didn't make it, without a animancer party member, it's going to be very hard to give them a fair shake. Especially as the not-East India company are probably horrifying imperialists, and presumably that's where the majority of the animancers will be, as the Republics are the pro-animancy state.

E: Completely missed a page of responses there! May as well make some changes while I'm at it!

She's a scientist, isn't she? Pillars doesn't strike me as the type of world where you'd get teenage scientists. Based on the art, I'd guess the elf equivalent of mid-to-late 20s, so younger than most of the companions in the first game (except Hiravias? (I had him around that age too) and potentially the main character), but certaintly not a teen.

E: Actually looking at the art again, it's not impossible she'd be elf-early 30s.

Of course. She is not a teenager. How could I? You are entirely correct: She is a women around 20 - 30 with a very attractive body and the charm of a young girl. In no way does she fit into any of the aforementioned categories. Neither would she fit into a manga comic. She was definitely not created to please fans of this kind of cliches and stereotypes.

Kind of like how Aloth is elf-early or mid 30's? He's 62 (67 in Deadfire), but has the appearance of being in his early or mid 30's.

So in principle Ydwin could be 30 and look like 12, but it would be totally legal to **** her. Isn't that great, manga fans out there?

I pretend elves slow in aging once they come of age, because otherwise things are creepy.

There was that creature in one of the 90s star trek spin offs that looked like a little girl and had a relationship with the cook. That was creepy.

Yeah, any Elf/non-elf romance in fiction is horrifyingly creepy because implicit in it is the unspoken age difference, which in some settings can be literally millenia.

So basically, I'm saying that Aloth and Ydwin are only allowed to be paired with each other, otherwise its too weird.

E: Don't Orlan have the opposite thing in Pillars where they all die at like 30? Or am I getting my fantasy universes muddled up?

Oh, Kes and Neelix!  WTF was that about?  I mean seriously, I know it was the other way around actually (Kes' race aged faster than normal instead, she looked 20 or so but was actually 6 years old or something), but did no one in development think how creepy it all was?  Especially since they emphasised Kes' immaturity?

Then again, Neelix was like the most hated and despised character anyway who deserved to die for just being a horrible, horrible character that made Jar Jar seem like a decent character.  Or was that just me who thought that?

Nope, but the whole series was terrible, so who cares. That was Voyager, wasn't it?

Yep, Voyager.  By then I felt Star Trek had ceased to be relevant anyway, they seemed stuck with outdated notions of sci-fi while actively crushing anything new that tried to come out.  Kinda destroyed everything it had built up and left us with a dearth of space adventure on TV for quite some time, though I could just be being all melodramatic about it. ;)

On the topic of terrible romances in fiction, I present to you NWN2; where an elf watches you from birth, stalks you throughout your life, is in love with you and you can get together with them. That might be the worst offender I can think of off the top of my head in the "Elves are creepy" genre.

Was that before or after Deep Space 9? I maintain that DS9 is the only good Star Trek.

Whoa whoa whoa.. hold up

The Ocampan race only lived like 9 years and Kes was an adult of her species and looked it

And to be more on topic I was one of the people initially suggesting that Ydwin become a full companion when the first sidekick blurbs were released because I liked the general concept, however, I walked it back a bit after her concept art was released

I think that's the nub of the issue. Anything that ages at a different rate throws up awkward implications, deserved or not.

Look I am not a huge fan of the super sexualized character in a serious RPG but are we really at a point where a fairly innocuous picture of a woman with glasses is sufficient to accuse people of liking that character of being creepy sex offenders?

Not really. I just enjoy provocating people. My real point is: Wether she is manga or not. She is there to please certain kinds of people. We all know that. You can argue about how old she really is, or if she really is drawn in a mange kind of way, but that are just ways of arguing away the obvious: She really is the cute teenage drow necromancer. She is your average "weird" gothic girl. I'm convinced that she will have some twists and have "more depth" than others of her kind, but she is a varation on a cheap pop culture cliche and nothing will change that.

Ydwin- A strange pale elf cipher from "a lot of different places". Fascinated by animancy, Ydwin spends her free time examining fresh and not-so-fresh corpses. Though she has a charming and pleasant demeanor, new acquaintances are often shocked at her intimate familiarity with death and her dispassionate affect in the face of even the most grisly scenes.

Questions for you folks: assuming that Ydwin had a life partner or a close family member, and that the individual met their end, would she attempt to capture its soul? Since she is a cipher, would she be able to connect to the captured soul of her lost companion or family member? Do we know what type of vessel is used for a captured soul so that it can be placed in a body?

1. Who knows what she'd do? She's a character concept rather than a character at the moment. There's not even any point speculating. Hell, she could go all Shard-bearer/Hiravias and eat their souls for all we know.

2. I don't know that the cipher aspect is relevant, but she's an animancer, so yes.

3. Well, we know adra's involved. Beyond that, neither the Devil of Caroc nor Galvino give many clues. And you never actually get to read the Theories of Pangram.
