Politics 2017 Part 3

America needs a new Liberal Party: https://ricochet.com/409758/america-needs-liberal-party/

So a party consisting entirely of a handful of right-wing intellectuals then?

Edit: Meanwhile, in spite of being a constant failure, Trump got all of his cabinet nominees confirmed so far, unlike Obama: http://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/democrats-are-losing-their-war-with-trump/

Thanks for doing away with filibuster Harry Reid!

Interesting metric there for victory, some of his cabinet nominees have had some fuss over them, but not as if they'd torpedo their chance for a good job and the Republicans kneel as ordered anyway, so.

A conservative explains what he wants his political opponents to be more like: conservative.

He'd like Europe. "Liberal" around here means mainly to advocate for a free market with less regulation.

On the other hand, we have green parties, social democrats, socialists....

I actually disagree, we don't need a new liberal party. We need both party's to put on their big boy pants and start working together and agree to disagree. Stop seeing each other as enemies because they have a difference in opinion and come to a compromise.

We need a good balance of both parties, not an all or nothing of each.

Technically not reporting, since it's a column/ opinion piece rather than a report, per se. Opinion pieces have far less strict editorial controls.

I wouldn't defend it or the WaPo though, by and large opinion and especially column authors are picked to toe the editorial line and write stuff the editors/ news reporters cannot get away with; and their articles are often used to 'manufacture consensus' on issues without the publisher having to stand behind what was said. eg all the articles ~2.5 years ago about how Russia would be bankrupt in 6-12 months- all opinion pieces, all designed to appeal to economically ignorant russophobes by telling them what they wanted to hear/ establish a narrative, and now they've been thoroughly debunked nobody wants to take responsibility for believing or writing them. Basically you can write any crap and the paper can disclaim whatever bits are inaccurate as being not the opinion of the paper, while others can take it as gospel from a newspaper of record. Pretty scummy, but an easy and effective way to influence the weak minded.

No we don't. Socialism in Europe doesn't mean anything anymore. Neither does true Conservativism. All we have is the same centrist liberal parties and a few insignificant outliers.

Yep, as Zor said, it isn't a report, but rather an opinion piece. The problem is opinion pieces have become the focus in the media today, instead of back page fodder like they used to be.

And sadly it's worse than just that.

My current pet peeve is 'anonymous sources claim' in news reports. That's been a staple of opinion pieces for ages but there's more and more bad (practically, non existent) sourcing in actual articles now, as well as supposition masquerading as analysis. Anonymous sources can say literally anything they want, as they have zero responsibility and zero repercussions for what they say and have exactly the same problems that opinion pieces have- low trustworthiness/ no guarantee of accuracy, ability to add bias without consequence, selective reporting etc- while theoretically still being actual news, unlike opinion pieces. 'Anonymous source' articles with no evidence in support are just gossip wearing the trappings of news.

Regurgitation and repetition of press releases used to be a problem as well, not so much in the last few weeks since most of the press hates Trump. I just wish they'd report facts and analyse the facts rather than acting as glorified PR/ activists then whining because they don't have credibility any more.

I just watched "All the President's Men". Completely unrealistic, no way journalists are that committed to their job. A total fantasy-piece, that's what it is.

The point was to highlight the terrible standard of 'discussion'. A sentence full of slurs and accusations, inaccuracies and generalizations. If the opinions in the paper are on the same level as opinions in the pub after a few beers then its really not much of a paper at all.

Whether its a report or an opinion piece is less relevant considering that someone still has to allow it to see print - and the editors are still responsible for it, even if they're hiding behind someone else's name.

I like how people just can't fathom a gay person with the views of Milo so they label him 'self hating'. Milo is many things but 'self hating' isn't one of them. The guy has a huge ego. that article is simply  a homophobic piece of crap spewing hatred and Nazism.

Actually what we really need is for people to rediscover the truth that, while interesting conversation, politics is not a matter of life or death. We are not defined as human beings by who we vote for. This outright hostility for strangers and even friends who voted for someone a person doesn't like is new and extremely unhealthy. The truth is after 8 years Barack Obama did more the course of the country to the left. But only by a matter of a few degrees. If Trump lasts 8 years any change in direction me manages will be one of degree. We are not a country built to achieve radical changes in a short time. So with that in mind is it really so important who is in the White House that we begin to hate each other over it?

I've said before, and I stick by it, hating someone over their political preference is like hating them because the cheer for a different sports team than you. It makes no sense. One voter did not decide this election. So it's stupid to get down on someone over their vote. And anyway besides calling you Congressman there is nothing to be done about any of it until 2018. Basically, Americans who are hung up on this b------t need to get a f-----g grip and go back to enjoying their lives. I know I have.

Isn't there a fundamental difference. One is protecting a specific target, the other is excluding everyone from a certain direction. It's the difference between putting a camera next to your safe or scanning every person that enters your house.

Is it that new? Recall people judging others by their political stances a lot in the past. Mostly people picking on liberals for being hippies but that is just the crowd I dealt with.

People can be defined by what groups they back. Sports clubs is a bad comparison as that seems like an example of loyalty gone insane as for the most part people's minds follow "my club right or wrong". Also nothing wrong with hating Chelsea FC fans.

Maybe it is due to excessive flaming online warping people's minds.

The irony is that France is giving the US lectures regarding treatment of muslims, while the country is ready to blow. They are the example of what happens when you don't build a "wall"  aesthetic barrier, be it a physical or a bureaucratic one in time.

Barriers are weak. What they should do is super-charge it with Tesla troopers so it can zap incoming terrorists.

France is excellent example what happens when you have millions of people in certain minority and then your politicians decide to get some populist points by picking said minority by creating laws and regulations that are designed to harass said minority. And now decade later said minority is full of people that resent majority of French people in such extent that they seem to be easy to incite to commit terrorist attacks against said majority.

It's not new but it certainly seems to be getting worse. And the sports comparison was not intended to be a comparison of fanaticism rather just a demonstration of a trivial difference to dislike someone over.
