Well, I don't know what more they could have done. You can't arrest someone for doing nothing... yet. With a Trump or Clinton admin in our future let's hope it stays that way.

They could've kept him on the watch list. That way they would've been notified when he bought guns. If it started looking like he's about to launch an attack, they could've put him under surveillance. They could have an informer approach him. The idea that law enforcement can't do anything about a known terrorist until after he commits an attack is ridiculous.

WOD do you think if Trump was president institutions like the FBI would become more effective ?

I find myself sometimes surprised by what you guys want from your governments. For example the NSA gets vilified for developing a system like Prism but yet people  feel the government doesn't do enough to prevent terrorism ?

Thats true but you do agree there is a degree of distrust towards certain US government programs from many people

Whats the happy medium GD, so for example  how would we convince people the real threat to the US can be prevented by the likes of Prism so  how do you accept it and at the same time not think the government has questionable motives for these types of initiatives ?

Somehow I doubt the veracity of this claim.

I dont only doubt I reject it with complete contempt , the suggestion that the FBI is either ineffective or indifferent is just right wing hubris  ....no substance to it  :geek:

Its happened in Europe, why can't it happen in the US?

I believe a measure of distrust of the government is a healthy thing. Especially this government. Don't forget this is the administration that thinks it's perfectly OK to use the IRS to suppress political activity, censor political speech online and on the air, undermine the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th, & 14th amendments as well as Article I & ignoring article II when it suits. Oh yes, this is also the administration that thinks veterans are likely terrorists and that is is perfectly OK to kill Americans with weaponized drones and no due process. So why would they be surprised we don't trust them when they are monitoring every phone call and email exchange made in the country?

As for your second comment I'll let the great American Benjamin Franklin speak for me: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." And they will have neither. There is a risk living in a free society. You must accept the former to enjoy the latter. Or give up the latter to eliminate the former.

Granted in this case it seems this guy bought ammunition fairly regularly(IIRC) and buying more wouldn't have set of any more red flags than normal. If you want the FBI to investigate every instance of persons of interest buying ammo, that would require a huge amount of man power and I don't want a visit from the party van every time I buy guns or ammunition.

Okay, I see what he means

But its a bit unfair to compare Europe to the USA, there is no  equivalent to the FBI in Europe and the EU has to balance security with the reality of its borders

So who would you blame in the EU for the various failures in security? Each country has its own way of ensuring there are no terrorist attacks

What I meant Bruce was in Europe there has been many instances of muslim crimes being ignored by the police because of a desire not to be called racist. In the UK there were over 1400 English girls raped by muslim rape gangs, and in some instances when the fathers of the girls went to rescue them, the police arrested them and left the girls with their rapists. The many crimes in Germany and Sweden have been covered up by victims and the police for fear of being labeled racist or making migrants look bad. So why is it so hard to believe that could happen in the US too?

Anyway, some similar organizations to the FBI would be the BPOL in Germany, the Police Nationale in France, KLPD in the Netherlands, Polizia di Stato in Italy, etc.

Okay but where did you get the number of 1400 from...Muslim rape gangs in the UK? I have never heard of such  a term...do you have links ?

But I do agree sometimes in its attempts to  be inclusive the EU can make mistakes .

I don't think it's the same. In those cases it's not political correctness ('cept maybe in the UK) impeding law enforcement, but something much more obvious -- those occurrences could be used directly as a political weapon against the incumbent government's immigration policies, especially in Merkel's case, so politicians did their damnedest to cover it up.

Perhaps it's different across the pond, but we aren't quite at the stage where cops investigating or arresting browns or blacks automatically triggers cries of "racism!" by the twitter leftard brigades. Sadly it's just a matter of time.

I dunno about that. We just had a white soldier stabbed by a black man after the group of black men drove by and shouted racial slurs at the white soldiers and the soldiers responded with a **** you which the men pulled over and got out and one of them stabbed one of th white soldiers and he bleed to death but the media making sure that this was not a "hate crime" at all. Though if rolls were reversed and the people in the car were white and the soldiers as black, it would have blown up the news as a massive and unjust hate crime.

But in US the only people who can be racist is whites, every other race is just discriminating if they do the same thing.

On the side-note of related things....

Anonymous hacks ISIS’s Twitter, makes it as fabulously gay as humanly possible

Look, it’s not going to bring down the caliphate, but it is funny as hell.

It’s been an incredibly tough week for the LGBT community after the horrific murder of 49 people at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

While the rest of the world mourned the vile attacks, ISIS celebrated.

The organisation’s homophobia is well documented – it’s outlawed, punishable by death, and there are grim videos of ISIS members publically executing LGBT people.

So in a small, moral victory for the good guys, hacktivist collective Anonymous infiltrated hundreds of pro-ISIS Twitter accounts and gave them a wonderfully gay makeover

Basically this.

I have a hunch that the people protesting about the FBI not preventing this attack just have no idea what kind of resources it'd take to investigate every single person who exhibits the same warning signs as the shooter.

Hell, one of the previous FBI BHU directors has made the comment (after he retired) that in the US statistically there are between 30 and 50 serial killers active at any one time. But the resources to actually analyse and identify the patterns aren't there because there's too much data to actually go through.  So magnify that to the level of just buying guns and psychological signs...

Edit:

Also, look at the numbers.

The FBI employs nearly 35,000 people, including special agents and support professionals such as intelligence analysts, language specialists, scientists, and information technology specialists.

The US population is.. what, roughly 323 million and some, over a landmass of a touch over 9 million square km.

Had to reprimand an employee yesterday for telling a joke based on this tragedy, the gay staff member who overheard him wanted his dismissal but I think that's overreacting. A morbid sense of humour and laughing at tragedy are English (and Jewish) traits, I believe it serves as a coping mechanim and to diminish the atrocity in question.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

Wow, thats a new low..someone finding this funny

I dont buy the whole " coping mechanism " because the attack happened in the USA and not the UK

Wouldn't surprise me if the FBI is already staking out legitimate suspects and they didn't have the manpower to follow this guy. Also, didn't the same gun store ring the FBI twice before on other people? Could also be a case of crying wolf.
