Couldn't sleep so instead I spent all night watching The Future Is Wild, a speculative fiction documentary about animal evolution after human beings go extinct, on YouTube. FML.

Man, that is quite some bull, no? Watched the first 10 minutes, but then it was done with me. :>

I thought it was fun. Totally ridiculous of course, an excercise in nonsense-science. But I liked seeing some of the ridiculous stuff they came up with. I especially liked the part where mammals like rodents and bats became extinct because the world became too hot and humid, despite the fact that those animals rose to prominence during a time of heat and humidity.

My favourite bit was definitely the spiders who built giant webs to catch thousands of dandelion-like seeds which they proceeded to feed to fat, fast-breeding rodents named "Poggles" to fatten them up to eat.

Just ordered another lens for my camera, a Rokinon 12mm F2.0 NSC. Its probably one of the best commercially available wide angle astro-photography lenses which is good for extreme shutter speeds without star trailing (thats where its wide angle comes in handy).  That thing is so good I could (with a few tricks) make breathtaking shots of the milky way in the middle of a brightly lit city.

I expect you to do just that ;)

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

Wrapped up most of my gardening for now. Need to let the soil settle before adding more.

Got the archeologists coming 'round tomorrow though to do a cleanup of the dig. Once that is done I'll be pretty much set out back.

All I'll need is to actually open and get guests :p

That's interesting. I understand that you could probably spit in any direction and hit an artifact in Greece, but even for a private citizen's garden they must check? Does it take forever to get them to come out and inspect?

Depends on where you are. In theory most parts of Greece now you have to have the proper permit from the ministry of culture's archeologists that you are allowed to build. In areas of greater itnerest such as the city centre of Athens they (used to) do "patrols". We got stopped before we even started to dig, when we were just clearing out garbage that had been thrown over the fence by passers by.

Law says that they have 6 months to check and make whatever decision. Reality is that they do not have the manpower for that... and that they are slower than a webbed, petrified PC, heavily encumbered with too much loot, who had their strength reduced to a tenth the original value by a curse.

To clear out the rubble from the pre-exisitng basement and dig ~40cm for the new foundation took a year and 107k euros not in the original budget.

We then made an agreement to keep some finds in the corner of the garden, underneath triple (basically bullet proof) glass. With some spotlights for the evening. I had to make a proper architectural proposal which they had to accept.

A few streets down, a neighbour heard what I was doing, thought it was a good idea and asked to do the same. They refused, so those finds got mostly demolished and what was left buried under his foundations.

In theory they need to do annual checks that everything is ok. Reality, my last check was 2011. But I got a good relationship with the local agency, so I kinda drag them in to make sure everything is in order. I invested too much money to have the thing that is supposed to make my garden special fall into ruin.  So for me it took about half a week for them to set up the inspection - which they basically said they only did to put my mind at ease. And a week and a half after that for them to come do the maintenance.

I expect you to do just that wink.png

I'm going to put it through its paces, thats for sure!

Today I let myself fall in a garden chair and I completely crushed it, nearly breaking my spine in the process. Still not sure what happened.

I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

You found artifacts in your own basement! That's awesome. What kind of stuff did you find and display?

Obviously, the same thing is happening to Woldan as happened to Cleve.  Soon, cars will be crushed when they run into him. :p

Vases from around 600-800 BC. Wasn't allowed to keep those :(

Old marble gravestone with a relief of the deceased. Wasn't allowed to keep that either :/

Parts of the old aqueduct. Re-buried underneath the foundation.

Wasn't allowed to take pictures either and they aren't even giving me the pictures they have to display those :(

All I got to keep were bits of walls and a large build storage urn thingie. Constructed stuff - no artifacts.

Getting a proper collector's permit is a true pain. Hard to get and comes with a lot of responsibility. Still, would have loved to keep at least a couple of little things. Maybe next time.

Bought a 4K Ultra HD Smart TV last night and delivered this afternoon. Starting it up was a breeze and watched some stuff on Youtube. Have just watched Mad Max Fury Road and I'm like, woah. I'm in heaven.

It blows my mind that you can dig stuff like that up in your "back yard". Theres no such history to unearth here.

Depends on where you live. They still find unexploded cannonballs from the US Civil War in a lot of the big battleground states.

But probably not so much from 600 BC (but hey it is theoretically possible).

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

People around here mostly dig up unexploded 500 & 1000kg bombs from WW2. The problem is, if you dig out one in your backyard you have to pay its disposal by the bomb squad and specialists. And thats extremely expensive. Stupid laws.

Shame that you couldn't have keep some of those - would have made a great conversation piece for your hotel ....

Would love to see more pictures of the hotel too.  :)

It's rare but from from time to time people still discover old ruins and burial sites in the Marana/Tucson area. Just last year or so when they were getting ready to put in a new mall they found some old ruins as they were preparing a site. I've heard of a lot of stories of things being discovered throughout the years but I don't have links for those but I'm pretty confident that at least some of them are true

Because I enjoy crushing my enemies, seeing them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women. I also have painkillers and 72 hours of taking it very easy.
