Man, I came to The Walking Dead sooo late.

When it first came out I watched the first few episodes, loved it, then sort of forgot about it because of other stuff going on in my life. Recently I downloaded the first four seasons on Sky and binged with Mrs. MC (who, it turns out, now loves zombies about five years after they became utterly passée). I'm going to start S4 tonight so please don't spoil me. Or use tags.

FWIW, S2 of TWD, and the whole Shane / Rick story was brilliant. And the opening of the first episode of S3 was one of the best pieces of show-don't-tell storytelling I've seen on the TV in a long, long time.

So I'm a happy bunny, especially as I've heard there will be a Season 6. And of course, shows like this keep our utterly superior English actors in work.

I've also recently finished a book with a sort of post-apocalyptic theme (a sort of 'low apocalypse' in a 'low magic' kinda way) and am finding myself getting really dragged into the genre in a way it never grabbed me before.

So with that in mind this thread is an appeal for you to share your favourite PA ideas, pictures, movies, books etc with me in case there's something I should be enjoying but ain't.

So, kicking it off.... favourite pulp schlock PA movie, my guilty pleasure?

I think that's the first time I've heard anyone praise season 2 of the walking dead. Season 2 made me give up on the show.

Doomsday was ridiculous fun.

I tend to like the more optimistic PA stuff, where **** happened, but things are getting better. Was one of the reasons I didn't like F3 as much as the rest. Its 400 years after the bombs and people are still largely making shacks out of sheet metal and no one has figured out how to make/wash clothes.

It was a chaste Brokeback Mountain with zombies. I loved it. It surprised and delighted me because I sympathised with both Shane and Rick's points of view. The inconsistency in their character arc is a minor quibble - Shane's is faster (which given the plot is inevitable) while Rick's is almost too gradual.

Give S3 a go. The deterioration of the character's morality is really well done.

Has anyone ever taken like a cliché, standard fantasy world with elves, dwarves, orcs, etc. and dumped a Mad Max style apocalypse on it?

Dark Sun.

I think the most obvious answer there is possibly 2nd Ed AD&D Darksun. Sort of.

TWD makes me angry, I always imagine how awesome it could be if the writers wouldn't constantly screw up, every now and then theres bits here and there that are brilliant and make me continue watching the show but it is getting more and more disappointing. The characters have become stale, illogical, dumb and boring, things really have started to drag in 3 & 4, zombies don't feel threatening anymore.... Also ham fisted action scenes and awful gun animations don't make me happy .

I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

Does Dark Sun count?

I had kind of wondered how the world or Arcanum would turn out when it entered the age of precision guided munitions, C4ISR, advanced composite materials, and general push-button warfare.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

I think one of my problems was I read the comics, and the first half of season 2 was adapted from one issue of the comic, and Shane was dead before they even got to the farm in the book. Plus they completely changed character personalities so the show just gave me a bad taste.

It would still be boring, turn-based and with depressing music.

Follows the small town of Jericho, Kansas following a nuclear terrorist attack on several american cities. Shows the town dealing with sudden loss of power, supplies, fighting for food with rival towns, etc. Later shows the political situation of the US with several independent nations fighting for dominance.

Planet of the Apes, Bladerunner...

A pretty decent trilogy, of which I recently read the first two: Justin Cronin's The Passage and The Twelve.

^ So, basically, about three or four years from now?

Pretty much. Story has all sorts of corporate corruption stuff in it too.

Its only a season and a half and I think its on netflix, so worth checking out.

Technically, any story based on Earth is post apocalyptic, since the Earth has been through several mass extinction events during its lifetime.

I'm saving bottlecaps in case of apocalypse. Hopefully someone creates power armor and gauss weapons by then.

Your OP mentioned The Descent.

the book is so much better than the film it's not even funny. The book is one of the few times I've had chills while reading nonfiction. It's great. Actual _horror_ plus *spoilers* people get eaten.

Jericho is good, though the abbreviated second season was a solid step down in quality. Survivors (which I'm pretty sure Monte linked to the original iteration of, given the Terry Nation ref) was very good as well. Second season of Revolution was actually pretty decent as well, though the first season, especially the first part, was not great at all.

I'd tend to put TWD (which I like, a bit despite myself. The story flip flops too often but the set pieces and atmosphere is probably the best of anything current) or Falling Skies (don't like it much, can't really explain why) into different criteria though, as they have primarily zombies and aliens as threats rather than the environment/ humans. Which is a bit inconsistent, as I'd definitely put Fallout into the post apoc box despite the super mutants...

Re-watched Dredd the other day, probably the only comic based movie I think has any real chops. If that were made into a tv series, i'd be more than happy. Though one could say that Dredd is set mid apocalypse rather than post, with the Apocalypse War story arc, the omni-present Cursed Earth and the gradual slide into inhumanity in the Mega-Cities.

Always liked Richard Matheson's I Am Legend as well, and a few of its spin offs. Oh and Logan's Run, but that was mainly because of young Ms Agutter.

Zardoz, enough said.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.
