What you did today

Labadal, I stumbled across a paper you might want to check out, today.

Cognitive distancing, cognitive restructuring, and cardiovascular recovery from stress

Britta A. Larsen∗, Nicholas J.S. Christenfeld; 2011

In recent years, studies have confirmed that recovery time is also a significant predictor of future heart cardiovascular disorders. Here we review these studies, as well as the cognitions and behaviors that have been found to influence recovery.

Thanks. I have been reading about this a little bit today.

@ Bruce:  Do you only do endurance, or do you also lift? If you do both remember that lifting 6 days / week is a tough routine, something more suited to the absolute pros.

Just cardio. Cycling, rowing and running

Why no lifting?

I gazed at the dead, and for one dark moment I saw a banquet.

I prefer the cardio disciplines, I can train by myself and I can change my schedule and diet if necessary. For example my friends who do weights really diet strictly, I do watch what I eat but I am not religious about it

I have the day off, so I'm going to go for a brisk jog and eat something tasty. Will probably end up playing video games in my underwear or trying to get with a girl.

So basically you will in your underwear, drinking alcohol and watching porn on the Internet. Good plan KP, that gets my approval :wowey:
I don't really watch porn, was thinking about a real girl.

Okay, an escort is always a good idea ;)

I don't pay for sex. I'm starting to wonder about your habits.

No you don't understand, its not about paying for sex. What if someone else paid for you? Or is that also below your moral compass?

I always lift alone and I don't even give a flying F about my diet. I just try to cut out sugar and alcohol.(which has nothing to do with the lifting though). Lifting is just as easy and schedules can be flexible unless you want to become a super-lean competition body builder or a world class strongman.

Doing only weight lifting is bad. Only cardio is also bad.

I hear you, I just prefer doing cardio only. But I realize that doing weights and cardio is better for weight loss, its just easier to do  cardio only

If you have an indoor swimming pool near, you should go swimming. Much healthier then lifting and your physique will look much better.

Very true, swimming is an excellent way of exercising and there is a pool at the gym. Swimming is very popular in South Africa, its not a bad idea and one I have thought about several times

Eh, I develop plenty of muscle doing using my own body weight.  I'm not interested in bulking up.

As a rule of thumb, diet is also about 75% of weight loss.  Exercise is an important compliment to a good diet, but exercising with a bad diet will get you nowhere fast.

Age plays a role too.  Your metabolism in your twenties is not the same as it is later in life.

Dont get me wrong, swimming is good, If you have an indoor swimming pool near, you should go swimming. Much healthier then lifting and your physique will look much better.

Strange, the only swimmers I know that have a decent physique from swimming alone are those olympic athletes, and they do a holy TON of competitive swimming.

Don't get me wrong, swimming is cool, I love it, but its mostly cardio and nowhere near as effective in increasing your bone density and strengthening your tendons and joints as exercises where you start with weights weighing as much as you, up to 2.5 times your own body weight.

I guess you never seen water polo players. Swimming also uses all your muscles and it works them in their full range of motion unlike lifting weights. Worth adding that swimming is also much easier. They don't say build like a swimmer for nothing.

I'm not saying lifting is bad, it's just about what kind of physique you are aiming for, not everyone wants to pump them self up.

I was thinking about ART and now i know what defines the soul of art for me. And that is art is creation. IT´s a very simple revelation but this basic thought of creation needs to be associated with art imo. I dont want to write much more then that because it´s not the right topic to do (and that something very dark, destructive and disgusting is by other people considered to be art) but it´s another step for me into a more evolved mindset. And i watched Oliver Twist from Roman Polansky and liked it very much. IT immidiately touched me and made me think about how good I had it as a child. How good most people have it (western societys) and dont know it!

I stood in my kitchen and thought well... you have everything most people had not and why do you need luxus realy. Why!

Wrong. The dead lift works all the muscles in your body and is considered the most important exercise in lifting weights. If you have an unbalanced body or just one weak link you' wont be able to lift much. If you are strong you'll be able to lift weights beyond 220 kilograms. Also there are many compound exercises that work 3/4 of your body.

And I think water polo is as much'' going swimming'' as volleyball is ''jogging''.

It may use all the muscles, but it doesn't do so equally, different forms use different muscles when you dead lift.

Water polo is mostly swimming and threading water, that is where most of the strength comes from. So if you use swimming as an exercise and not as a recreation you should see similar results.

Thats why you do more exercises than just dead lifts, the only goal of weight lifting is to target and strengthen every single muscle, bone and tendon you have in your body, thats why there are so many different exercises.

Water polo is mostly swimming and threading water, that is where most of the strength comes from. So if you use swimming as an exercise and not as a recreation you should see similar results.

If that was true athletes that need strength and bone density would go swimming, instead they all do rigorous weight exercises, the sprinters, the MMA and UFC fighters, boxers, pole lifters, hammer throwers and strongmen.....

I don't say it doesn't build muscle, it does, but compare threading water to squatting 3x8 130 kilograms and you might see and especially feel a difference. If you don't believe me, try it. I do it, I also go swimming.

*edit* And if treading water would build any considerable amount muscle mass those Tour De France cyclists would have gotten legs the size of giant dinosaurs by now, from all the heavy mountain cycling for hundreds of kilometers. They don't. Too many repetitions, too little resistance, it builds endurance, not strength / size.

In any case surely basic rules apply and you have to buy one back? And I for one am not buying hookers for the Chinese government.

There are two:

Not curing what 99% of the western civilization suffers from: bad posture.  Muscular imbalances on your body that lead to bad posture which later down the road leads to a back so screwed up that it looks like it had been used as an unsuspended bridge on a busy highway.

Most people either have:

Weak back, the chest pulls the shoulders down and forward, your abs pull your upper body down and you'll look like a hunched over dried leaf with a very unhappy spine and neck.

Weak abs, your back is pulling and you'll have a protruding belly making you look like a duck. A very unhappy, unhealthy duck. Especially awesome in combination with a strong chest (See above)

With Strength exercises you can target and eliminate those muscular imbalances. You'll suck at deadlifts sand feel pain if you have any of those disbalances.

Running and other cardio can in fact increase those disbalances because your body has to do work and is put under lots of stress. Try running with a screwed up spine.

Especially racing bikes tend to increase bad posture because of your extremely hunched over, static stance.

Number two: you might have endurance, but no strength. Only a combination of strength AND endurance is awesome.

Hm ok, couldn't you correct your posture without weigh lifting ? Lacking strength from doing it only was the prominent point but looking at it in terms of just being healthy as a person as fit enough for your daily duties.

Yes you could.  Something like Yoga is very effective at building strength throughout the body.

I decided to ask my wife about this, because Woldan's opinion of swimming seemed off to me.  She has a degree in kinesiology, was a personal trainer, and now teaches PE.  She actually supported Woldan, because she said swimming and biking are not weight bearing activities.  I was surprised to hear that.  So weight training is an important compliment to those, particularly in building bone strength and preventing osteoporosis.

However weight bearing activities like Yoga and running decrease your need for lifting weights, and someone doing Yoga every day is going to be just fine competing strength wise with your typical person lifting weights.

Personally consider mixing all different kinds of exercise the best way, wish I could swim more but chlorine doesn't agree with my skin.

Go for yoga and gymnastic based exercises. They are weight bearing, but the weights are generally your own body. The guy training us for Tough Mudder used to lift weights for about ten years, but for the last 7 or 8, has totally shifted to gymnastic training because he's found it works more muscles in a lot more ways. That and it's generally something you can do with minimal needs for equipment and space.
