Liked your post, despite there being nothing to like about the picture :S

Preordered GT6 despite knowing about microtransactions, still fearing how it will ****tyfie and break the balance of the game... It might be my last Gran Turismo game purchased, hope not :(

I just picked up Assassin's Creed IV on Amazon for $30, seemed like a pretty good deal for a brand new game.  It is only on sale for 1 day.

It's hovering at around £26 here in the UK. So with Christmas shopping to be done, I'm trying to avoid taking the plunge just yet... Temptation and all that still.

It's funny because it's true.

I am wondering if this is still true, though. Because I can't remember when I played a game the last time that required a dlc for more information on the main story or something like this. Some games have pre-order dlc which add to the games content, but this is most of the time just minimal stuff that probably could be ignored easily as well. Like the pretty useless armor pre-order dlcs from New Vegas, etc.

Exactly.  It is true that expansions are nearly dead, but they've been replaced by full length sequels developed as quickly as possible instead.  That's what you see happening with Assassin's Creed and Saint's Row games.  Most DLC is fluff, and the low prices reflect that.  They are for people who like fluff.  Mass Effect is literally the only game that put out relevant story DLC's, everything else can be skipped without missing a thing.

Also the Xcom EXPANSION is phenomenal.  It takes the base game and completely supercharges it.

This always frustrates me because it's not really reflective of reality.

For instance, the entirety of Tales of the Sword Coast was intended to be a part of the main game of Baldur's Gate.  But it was cut from the scope and later readded as an expansion pack.

If we were to pick a picture that most reflects this, it'd be "last-gen" since you didn't really get the full Mona Lisa (although there were no exclusives).  You just didn't know any better at the time.

So it's more a case of in 1997, you had a canvas painting of the Mona Lisa with a bit of the bottom part chopped off. Today, you get a postage stamp depicting the Mona Lisa, with a bit of the bottom part chopped off. :)

If you are wondering about why next gen looks in that picture like it does, read up little bit on Forza 5 and Ryse...

And read something more than magazine reviews...

I wouldn't really say changed.  By supercharged I mean they added to the depth of the game.  More to do with your troops, more to build, more unique missions.

But that attitude is now not very common amongst developers/publishers... most of the time it is nickel-and-diming customers for few maps/cars/weapons/skins etc etc...

XCOM is an exception, and it deserves special love for it...

maps/cars/weapons/skins are all the definition of superficial fluff.  It doesn't affect my playthrough of a game in any way to not have those things.

The people responsible for this are the consumers, by the way.  If no one bought the first horse armor when it came out in Oblivion, we wouldn't have this trend.  It is driven completely by consumer demand.

How so?  Dragon Age released a full expansion.  None of the DLC really impacted the story of the main games.

Too many games with "Dragon" in the name - I couldn't figure out what "Dragon Derp" referred to...

Gotta love Jim Sterling.  His takedown of CoD: Ghosts, just before he left Destructoid, was a bit oveboard, but nevertheless quite entertaining.  As usual, he goes overboard here, but is still quite correct in much of what he rants about.

On the left, below "Fueling the Future", there are 3 lines of text.  On the right there are 3 bullet points.  Half-Life 3 confirmed!

Sorry, I had to get that out of my system.  I'm mostly surprised they weren't a part of the Linux foundation already.  GabeN is obviously banking on Linux to help him make even more money than he's already making, so no surprise there.  It would be pretty awesome if they wound up open sourcing some of Steam, but that's a pipe dream.

Chances are they will end up integrating Open source into Steam OS, but I agree with most points on Gaben's vision. I prefer competition and multiple choices rather than a monopolized industry.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*
