Music, one of the most important issues?

RPGFan: What are your goals with the game, musically? Who will be composing the music? Will you be offering the soundtrack as a download for those who ultimately purchase the final game, or is it just for Kickstarter backers?

TrebuchetJustin Bell, Obsidian Audio Overlord: Above all, we want the music to enhance and support the rich narrative and setting of Project Eternity. To accomplish that we'll use strong themes that are performed by distinctive and interesting instrumental ensembles. Ultimately we want the score to be every bit as memorable as the Infinity Engine game soundtracks are. As for composer, we don't have anything to announce just yet, but you should definitely expect more on that in the future. Lastly, we do want to release the soundtrack after the Kickstarter ends and we're exploring the various options to do that as well.

Obsidian ‏@Obsidian Current PayPal status: $140,000. 2,200 backers

"Hmm so last Paypal information was 140,000 putting us at 4,126,929. We did well over and beyond 4 million, and still have an old backer number from Paypal. 76,186 backers. It's very possible that we have over 75,000 backers if I had new Paypal information. Which means we may have 15 Mega dungeon levels, and we already are going to have an amazing game + cats (I swear I will go stir crazy if Adam doesn't own up to the cats thing :p)."

Switching to Paypal means that more of your money will go towards Project Eternity. (The more you know.)

Paypal charges .30 cents per transaction and 2.2% for anything over 100,000 per month for U.S currency. Other currency is different, ranging from anywhere between 2.2-4.9%.

Kick Starter is a fixed 5% charge at the end.

Music is critically important, particularly *not* reusing the same tracks over and over again and having a variety of pieces. Another pitfall is when you only have a short-loop track for a location you're bound to revisit or spend a lot of time at. If there was one place they should pick a battle, it would be that: find a way to make it a much longer track for the stronghold or house or city X, or ways to change up the variety.

For instance, what if you hired bards or singers and just went with ambient sound, meaning that the music changed as you wandered to and fro in a location - sometimes the clanging of a smithy or clamor of a crowd might be ascendant, other times the strumming of a lute or plucking of a harp...

Well, first I'd just like to chime in with those who liked the Arcanum soundtrack.. It's one of my favorites of all time, and I actually still listen to it regularly at home and at work. That said, nothing against anyone who doesn't like the string quartet thing, tastes differ.

Regarding the live music stretch goal, I would LOVE to see that. In fact, I'd love to volunteer as a free musician. I'm sure the community following this game has a few excellent musicians within it that would love to contribute their talents, gratis, to see them integrated into an awesome game. May be a bit difficult to organize, but definitely cheaper!

I love Justin's enthusiasm. He was into every sound and music thread.

Thanks man! ;( *gets actually teary eyed*

I would also like to thank him. I hope that game will reach 4 million. Live instrumentation will add something to the score that couldn't otherwise be attained.

Excellent news! And really nice to see developers caring about the views of fans.

Do let us hear some of what you're working on, every so often during the development process! If I can hum a tune in anticipation life will be good ;)

Remember: Argue the point, not the person. Remain polite and constructive. Friendly forums have friendly debate. There's no shame in being wrong. If you don't have something to add, don't post for the sake of it. And don't be afraid to post thoughts you are uncertain about, that's what discussion is for.
