Cartoon/Anime/Comic settings you would like to see a rpg set in

I think Obsidz, having been on the verge of releasing an Aliens game, would have had an easier time with Cthulu and, moreover, could have made a real franchise out of it. Alas, to paraphrase, there is no sadder phrase from mouth or pen than these four words "what might have been." At any rate, my thinking is a tad dimminished right now, but I think Bloodmoney would be a better setting that Rainbow Six. Awesome setting.

I really enjoyed that clunky ol' game, Dark Corners of the Earth. i can' remember who suggested it, maybe Wrath, but it was worth the money. Nevertheless, it wasn't an RPG and I'd buy an Obsidz Cthulu RPG sight unseen.

My completely selfish position is that the big O avoid any horror IPs - because I don't do that genre, and thus would hate to miss out on the anticipation of, and later the playing of, any such announced game. :p

given the recent popularity o' comic superheros in other media, am genuine surprised that some developer hasn't taken a stab at a crpg. (or maybe they has, and we simply didn't notice) freedom force were a campy take on the genre, but it showed that such a crpg could be commercial viable and... good fun. marvel and dc is providing multiple possible settings, but there is sooooo many different superhero comic titles that would make excellent fodder for a crpg game. perhaps gladstone's school for world conquerors.

HA! Good Fun!

ps anime (japanese anime) almost universal sux. seriously. there is a handful o' cliche anime character archetypes that anime writers drop into increasingly wacky settings with largely nonsensical plots. "creativity" in anime is rare 'bout character. instead, anime writers focus all their efforts on concept.

Right, our cliches are so much more better than theirs.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

thank you for creating the Perfect straw-man example. will be a learning opportunity for the kiddies.

that being said, since you bring up the issue of superiority/inferiority o' cliches, we will submit that the lolli (sp?) as a character archetype designed to elicit a sexual response is making our blood run cold. such a disturbing and pervasive archetype is hardly constituting a condemnation o' all japanese archetypes.... but it is seriously messed up, no?

Speaking of straw men...

Maybe I'm missing the subtext of mainstream animes, but outside of niche pornographic material I don't really see lolis "being designed to elicit a sexual response". Just like outside of porn I don't see schoolgirls or cheerleaders as particularly sexual (also the whole lolita complex was started by Nabokov not the Japanese...So arguably western cliche). So for almost every depraved eastern archetype I can find a western counterpart. With the difference being that Japan has overexploited all of theirs.

Look it's okay if you're biased because it makes you uncomfortable, just admit to it, say your opinion and have the courtesy of respecting someone else's.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

clearly you dont know what strawman is... but that is okie dokie. and you is damn right that it makes us uncomfortable. duh. it should makes You uncomfortable. THAT IS THE POINT. the fact that such a common and "overexploited" (is that a word?) Japanese archetype doesn't make you, and the Japanese viewing public, uncomfortable were exactly what we were referencing. regardless, am not sure what kinda subtext you could be looking for to explain "pantsu" (again, am not sure if we is getting phrases correct as the vocabulary is foreign to us) and bizarre bathing suit shots o' preteens. is just... bizarre.

uncomfortable? HA! yes! hell yes! orogun, let us introduce you to the point...

sheesh.

You have taken an entire series of stories, traditions and archetypes and reduced them to lolis. That's a strawman.

No, it doesn't make uncomfortable but you're arguing opinions not actual points. Cultural relativity old mate, our bizarre it's their everyday and viceversa.

I could easily point out that children's pageants are just pedophile fodder and are actually more damaging ;since they do involve real people, rather than an animated show. Yet it's permitted because our culture values sexuality as key to success. So, are Americans really more normal than Japs?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

no we didn't. in fact, we specifically said we weren't condemning all japanese archetypes. bad reading skills. and we would like to remind you that we initially did not distinguish japanese archetypes-- you did. was YOUR strawman. so try not to be more o' a hypocrite.

"No, it doesn't make uncomfortable"

*chuckle*

that is all you need say. *shudder* but maybe after you learn strawman, you can figure out why the moral/cultural relativism bit is such a slippery slope. oh, and just as soon as kiddie beauty pageant contestants become mainstream archetypes in sitcoms, dramas and western animation, you will perhaps be making a point relevant to the immediate issue.

You initially voiced your disdain for anime cliche's and then proceed to argue lolis, so I'm I led to believe that you do enjoy anime and your argument refers only to a few uncomfortable moments? I'm not pulling a strawman you're simply misrepresenting yourself and confusing me.

May I introduce to you the newest musical phenomenon "Justin Bieber" a pubescent boy with the complexion of a toddler. He was preceded by the Jonas Brothers who drew unnecessary attention to their deviant sexual practice of something called "abstinence".

Point being, that despite the fact that we have always had youth on our media now our icons have become more "sexualized". Now whether this and the pageants are a symptom or cause its another matter. But hebephilia it's as old as those depraved Greeks, so there's always been some sexual element to the portrayal of youth on media namely because this its the point at their lives in which they discover their own sexuality.

So you are too late to win that fight.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

you is actual attempting to defend sexualized lolli? use Greeks to defend?

however, we will continue to respond to your twisted little rationalizations in the hopes you will respond with even more bizarre material.

The market practice it's geared towards middle school girls, yet the means remains the same as it does with adults. Its the old adage "Sex sells", so it would be really no surprise if someone older picked up on that and responded to it.

But I just used him as an example of how the media capitalizes on sex appeal even when its not completely appropriate.

No, i'm defending cultural relativity by pointing out the same oddities on our own. Starting with the Greeks seems to make the most sense since its the greatest example that our own depravities are not the result of cultural exchange with Japan but rather original. Its just a difference of perspective between cultures, not really an issue of right or wrong.

Glad to see you switch to a red herring. I was wondering when we would get to that.

So now the point of your argument is the quality of Japanese storytelling? I thought that we were arguing the difference in our cliches, which by itself should make clear that we are not discussing the best of both but the worst.

please review the thread.... and somebody Please explain strawman to oro. is making rational discussion increasing difficult. you are the guy that for some inexplicable reason suggested that our (western?) cliches is no better than Japanese cliches. nobody in this thread had made a claim to the contrary before you challenged the notion o' western cliche dominance. if you review you will see that from the very start we were observing shortcomings in Japanese storytelling in anime, so to suggest that we is doing red herring is... bizarre.

as for the name-calling (which is again a rather poor attempt to gets thread off the rails,) the only group we actual used any arguable name-calling to reference, were coffee shop goth. you did a much better job by directing your comments at us personal. so congrats to you for standing up for the gothies? no doubt they were terribly offended by being called "clowns" and were needing you to save them... or somesuch. however, please note that nietzsche frequently insulted his detractors and contemporaries in his writings, and as you is taking a moral and cultural relativist stance (HA!) we find your most recent hypocrisy utterly baffling... winky emote aside.

maybe this is one o' those language gap problems? is english your second-language? is indeed ironic that Gromnir is the one to broach the idea, but we does see that non-english speakers will frequently use words and phrases in odd ways. name-calling, red herring, strawman, etc... perhaps is just a simple matter o' lacking familiarity with language.if you is getting yourself confused by the intricacies and subtleties o' language, we will endeavor to be more patient with your seeming ignorance.

...

at this point am suspecting we is now gonna needs explain "irony" and "ignorance."

If you really don't see the difference between cliche and storytelling then you really need to watch something better.

Good storytelling happens despite the archetype not because of it, cliches rely on the appeal of the archetype while having no real story. Hope that makes it clearer to you.

I'm not defending them, I merely don't want to be put on the same category as the one you described. Also, don't take it so personally a bit of banter comes with the territory. :)

I thought there was 3 main categories of Anime... something with big robots, something with pedophile fanservice and the last category which features a lot of tentacles. Sometimes there are "crossover" franchises where you have two or more categories present. But then, the only Anime I saw from start to finish was probably Ghost in a Shell and I remember seeing most parts of a movie called 'Akira' many years ago. Just not my thing. Couldn't imagine it making interesting (for a western mindset) settings for rpgs. As a completely cultural stereotype, the Japanes comes across as having an obsession with dolls and robots, both in art and particularly in science, where they regularly feature in the heaedlines with new technological advances.

Those were the two main anime that made it out of Japan early on. Both are heavy style endeavours rather than trying to go for a good story (seriously... the Ghost in the Shell manga is about the size of a text book, and includes a lesbian cyber orgy along with the discussion on what it means to be human and other transhuman concepts).

Mecha anime and harem anime are/were two of the biggest ones to be exported because they were aimed at little boys, and the shows aimed at girls tended to make moms uncomfortable (given that the "female" anime often has at least one semi-gay character and revolves around relationship drama... you know, stuff girls shouldn't be worrying about until they're 22 if mom has her way).

There's also fighting anime, sports anime, racing anime, relationship anime, slice of life anime, supernatural anime, "OMG wtf am I watching" anime, Humor... To blatantly pigeonhole it as Gromnir did with the cliche's idiocy... is blind.

Probably my favorite anime is Ruroni Kenshin. Bleach used to be second but it kinda died in the past two years, both popularly and creatively. And of course, I can't go without mentioning Mobile suit Gundam <,< if I did my avatar would reach through the screen and strangle me.

Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!

I prefer anime that's not adapted from manga since they tend to screw up with fillers and cuts, but I've stopped watching anyway. I only read manga now. Plenty of that though.

I thought of Ultimate Alliance as more of an action game. Skills and character levels to not an RPG make. The gameplay was like Double Dragon with superpowers. I enjoyed it, but it was in no way an RPG.
