Ok on Monday I will be in the only shop who still sells this game in my country and will be taking Eternal Sonata home, thank you for the recommendations :)

Anyway, I might be very strange figure with very very strange taste in games, but here is the list of the games I realy enjoyed from JRPGs :p

I played all FFs except FF3, and my top 5 favourites are:

FF IX (IMO best FF game ever created, I wish SE would do at some point FF IX-2 at least for PSP or VITA)

FF X

FF X-2 (yes I actualy liked the game, not because of the story, which was typical JPop story, but the ATB system is IMO the best combat system in any FF game I played)

FFVII

FFXIII (yes for some reason I liked XIII as well O.o)

other JRPGs I played and liked:

Knights of Xentar on PC - really interesting piece of game, I tried it without knowing what kind of game it was, and then after few hours I found out that it is kind of soft porn story O.o I finished the game and liked it despite the more spice nature of the game

Star Ocean I and II for PSP

Star Ocean IV for PS3

Atelier Rorona PS3

Atelier Totori PS3

Disgaea 3 PS3

White Knight Chronicles PS3

Hyperdimension Neptunia PS3

Demons Souls PS3

Dark Souls PS3

Unfortunately I was PC exclusive player until 2009 so I missed out a lot of awesome games on PS1 and PS2 and I am atm trying to get as much out of them as possible.

I have but never played Chrono Trigger, Chronocross, Star Ocean III, Disgaea 4 and Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2.

I downloaded Arc the Lad a couple of days ago. I'll definately look out for Xenogears is that in the EU store?

MW you should definately look into the Chron series then. Absolutely. Run, not walk...to get it.

And be aware...you can truly screw up your future...or your past...in the Chrono series...

Catherine / Katherine is the Atlus game? It's tangentially a MegaTen game; not really a role-playing game but a platform/puzzle game. Also I'm stuck on one of the puzzles so I can't say how good the game is until I can get past it. :)

EDIT:...and beat to the punch by a gazillion other posters. ;)

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

When you say Megaten game, do you mean that it's mechanics are similar to the Persona games or is it actually part of the series?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

The mechanics are nothing like the Persona games (since its a puzzle game). However the main character, Vincent, appears in the Persona 3 PSP game and the demons/gods stuff is related to the MegaTen games as I understand it.

i remember grandia was pretty good too, almost forgot about that game. definitely wasn't on par with FF6-9, but it was pretty fun at the time

Most of my favorite games have already been mentioned.

If you guys own a Nintendo DS, Radiant Historia is a must.

It actually has a protagonist that isn't a complete moron. He makes sense, and can take care of himself. It was refreshing seeing a protagonist like him, only thing bothering me was his name: Stocke. There's an interesting story about a decaying world and warring countries, the combat system is turn based with some twists and the music is brilliant. This game really made me get that SNES rpg feel that I have been longing for. Took me around 45 hours to complete.

Tales of Graces f

The game doesn't have the most interesting characters or the world's best story, but the gameplay alone is worth it. Fast paced battles, that rewards you for actually playing with some skill. You gain skills from different titles you unlock. You unlock a title, equip it and when you get enough skill points, the skill is learned. You unlock more and more titles for fighting enemeies, using skills a set number of times, buying stuff, etc. It's also not unusual to spend a lot of time improving equipment. Called "Dualizing" in this game.

Tales of Vesperia.

It might not have the awesome combat of Graces f, but the combat is still good, and it is the better overall package. Yuri is a surprisngly good main character for a JRPG. He does what he thinks is right and doesn't take sh** from anyone. The rest of the cast is a mixed bag. Some are likeable and others not so much.

There are many other games I wanted to recommend, but I'd just overdo it.

Good timing here in that Legend of Dragoon is hitting PSN on May 1. I don't want to wait, so I may pop my discs in and play it for old times sake.

I thought Tales of Vesperia was okay; I enjoyed playing it but once I finished it I didn't think I'd ever play it again. I might give Graces f a try.

I don't replay many JRPGs anymore, tbh. I spend a lot of time trying to do everything (if possible) in one playthrough and move on to the next game. The last JRPGs I replayed were FFV and FFVI.

I loved replaying Chrono Trigger. I think I beat it about every three months.

That said I've replayed Persona 3 and 4 a few times (although I still haven't finished P3 PSP).

i got radiant historia and LOVED it for the first 15 hours or so, but eventually the game got a bit too repetitive. you keep going through the same locations, or ones very similar to ones you've been through before, it just made me yearn for FF7 or something where every dungeon, area, cave, and cavern was totally unique in design/color/sound/theme etc

but the combat system and characters were great from what i played, so to people who wouldn't be bothered by the repetitive environments i can imagine radiant historia being one of the best jrpg's of the last few years for sure

Of the Phantasy Star series my favorites are probably II and IV. Didn't really care for it as much after they started the entire Online biz. I suppose the PS2 ones started to be at least bearable again.

Phantasy Star III was the first game of that series I played. It was rocky going for awhile! But after I think a year I finally finished it. Never did II and I liked IV but it wasn't worth the $100 it retailed for when it was released.

III was fun. The best part was picking your bride and seeing the results. Something I still like and in some ways I feel Agarest copies today (best part of Agarest as well though). I hated the mazes/dungeons though...they had passages that looked so much alike it was hard to remember where exactly you had been and where you were going...or if you mapped it, just exactly where you were!!!

I played both Phantasy Star and Vectorman to death on Mega Drive. Thinking about it more, those were also the days of Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Record of Lodoss War. Then I lost interest in anime and moved over to LucasArts/Sierra adventure games.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

I liked III but I got stuck on a section I think in the first generation where I had to trigger something and missed it and then got frustrated because I couldn't find anyway to advance.

I have the Sega collection with the PS series on it, but never beat PS1...
