I wonder why nobody has come up with ejector seats as replacement for the old airbag yet. Just imagine if the car computer could catapult you up in the air a fraction of a second before impact at terminal velocity. Of course, ramming the guy in front of you in a tunnel or under a bridge might still prove a bit of a challenge :(

Apart from the fact that the g-forces necessary for ejection would be significant, and likely to cause more damage alone.

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Old trick/con. It's called not bathing. Seriously.

Previous people who claimed it were debunked by Randi. Put some talcum powder on them and it ceases to work.

Don't know if you guys have seen these but NASA has released some new hi-res lunar pics. The ones of the Apollo-17 landing site were pretty cool. Jeez, Cernan and Schmidt were a couple of pigs. If they left a campsite looking like that in a State Park they would get fined!

One guy did a 92 pound slab of stone. Yeah. (warning, lots of men without their shirts) http://www.odditycentral.com/pics/human-ma...in-vietnam.html

Which demonstrates two things. One, it can get very sticky. Two, it isn't magnetism.

There's a thought. If recyclable material is useful material on long missions, maybe future missions should aim to leave as much as possible?

Incidentally, I was at a conference on Wednesday with some of the nations brightest minds. And two people failed to turn off their mobile phones having been explicitly asked to do so.

Am I the only one who watched Stan Lee's superhumans?

Anyways they have very smooth and small skin cells, its all Van der Waals force just like geckos. Probably why the powder cancelled it.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Ah, there is a certain arrogance that comes with the title "brightest mind". Turn off our phone, surely he did not mean me?

Or maybe it wasn't that exclusive after all. I mean, they let Wals in!

Somebody has to serve the tea!

EDIT: I think it's partly the (very limited) Army training I've done. If some bugger tells you to check your phone is off then you check your phone is off. You don't assume it's off. You certainly don't just ignore him, although that's as much manners as anything else.

What if the reason he is telling you to turn it off is because he thinks interruption is rude, while the reason you're keeping it on is because you need to be on call all the time in case of an emergency? (Medical specialist, senior sysadmin for an ISP, parent with daughter in hospital in a coma, something like that)

I'd say **** army training - I can make up my own mind whether to follow a directive.

I was going to point out, as Nepenthe said, most of those really smart people probably feel they are too self-important to practice good manners. Interesting that Krezack falls in with that crowd

It must mean you are really smart! But also a bit rude. That seems like a decent trade-off.

Suppose your job requires you (as a condition of employment) to be on call 24/7 on your work mobile, and you are attending a conference that tells you to turn your mobile off. What would you do? One option risks a person's employment (and possibly has other consequences if the call was important enough to go through to a work mobile), while the other - being rude and self-important as you paint it - annoys a speaker at a conference for a minute or so.

2 people out of what was probably quite a large crowd seems like a small number to me. It's easy to see how those 2 people may have had very legitimate reasons for keeping their phones on.

As always, YouTube comes to the rescue with a video example of my point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiSJthqk4S4

That was actually Guard Dog, I think. Anyway, it sounds a lot more insightful than anything I would say... :yucky:
