Fallout: New Vegas

Recommended Posts

They're certainly showing a lot of confidence in the game by letting it be playable in so many conventions.

A good sign?

Why not?

Everything about the game looks good, and its still pretty similar to an already known and successful game. The new stuff has been met reasonably favorably, and most of the cirticism is graphics related, which is what the same people said about FO3 2 years ago. SO nothing new there.

This is pretty much a slamdunk for Obsidian. WHich is great. About time they were involved in a game that really blew the doors off in terms of sales. Also about time for Josh as well. Lots of hard work finally pays off.

I'll wait for the reviews before singing praises for Obsidian's success though. The press has generally been less excited about New Vegas than Fallout 3 (understandable, no novelty factor) but who knows how less excited they are?

I've seen people that are seriously convinced that anything less than 90 on metacritic for this game will mean that the game is a dud, and after Alpha Protocol reviewers and gamers alike are really wary about anything that comes out from Obsidian (I've seen like a hundred posts on the Bethsoft boards that were defending the game.. not because Obsidian was doing great in their opinion, but because Bethesda was helping them so it couldn't be bad.. really..), so... yeah.

Christ, I surely sounded like a doomsayer, but hey, maybe between two extremes it'll help keep things in perspective.

EDIT : I can't wait for you to get a look at Menze's new perk icons. They're awesome.

Assuming there's no truth to the All-Game-Reviewers-Hate-Obsidian rumors that surrounded AP, I can't see NV getting worse reviews than FO3, and FO3 got pretty good reviews. I'm sure there will be some criticism of the graphics and animations, and there may be some FO3 backlash criticism, but overall I can't see anything but high scores.

I'm not sure how much it matters anyway. FO3 and Bethesda have created a large built-in audience for NV that almost guarantees good sales. If we had been hearing bad things about the development of NV, I would be concerned, perhaps, but there's really been nothing but good word the whole time.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Half the fun for me in playing Neverwinter Nights 2 and MotB was delving into the toolset to find workarounds. If it's less buggy than those, I'll be sad.

I'm sure it'll be very playable on release. Everything I read indicates they're all being very careful this time.

Knowing Sawyer I'm pretty sure it's their focus.

Fallout : New Vegas is also a pretty big game though, so I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if it's less buggy than Fallout 3 (which is a more than enough acceptable level of bugs for me, considering that it's a vast open world game).

Nah man. I won't even be surprised. I really am that confident. Everything Sawyer said points to that. Despite their history, I'm extremely sure this one will be just fine on release. They won't make the same mistake again.

Bethesda are far less likely than Sega to screw around with Obsidian, love or hate them they do tend to release a game "when it's done", I've not encountered too many quest/game breaking bugs in Bethsoft games, crashes however are rife, if there's one thing I expect from New Vegas it's crashes.

Does anyone know who originally designed NCR?

Care to elaborate a little bit more? What do you mean by 'originally designed NCR' ?

You mean the area in Fallout 2? The faction in Fallout 2?

Or the idea of NCR (which already appeared in a Fallout ending, but I'm sure you know that already)?

Anyway, I don't have clue for any of these answers.

area and the faction. I don't think that NCR in F1 was anything more than a mention in the ending.

At least the area wasn't done by MCA, since his major area in FO2 was New Reno.

Looks like the demo of New Vegas shown at QuakeCon will be different from the E3's one :

When you go hands on with Fallout: New Vegas, you'll start in Freeside, an area just off the strip. From there, you'll have 20 minutes to explore wherever you like within the Mojave Wasteland or check out nearby locales like the Atomic Wrangler Casino or tangle with a faction aptly known as The Kings. Don't worry... we'll provide plenty of Stimpacks and weapons so you can survive.

I know I'm strange, but my main concern is whether or not Fallout NV will have an enthralling story, with interesting characters that aren't cookie-cutter stereotypes. Also, that it has enough of these qualities. I know with Obsidian at the helm, this is probably the best chance we'll have to see this game be well written. So, I am cautiously optimistic.

Oh, and one last thing: Here's to hoping NV will have a decent soundtrack, F3's was grating. But with Inon Zur, I'm not holding my breath. With Obsidian though, they might "critique" his attempts if they don't fit the vibe of the rest of the game. Of course, I really don't know how the recording process works.

Fallout 2 had great soundtrack, they should just copy/paste it

I think that in an interview with the sound director of Obsidian he talked about things like the themes subtly changing depending on your reputation with the community you're visiting and things like that, and I'd be interested in seeing how they pull it off in-game.

I also suspect that I'll end up using the radio of the Pipboy as a soundtrack most of the time.

heh, this is kinda cool

that's exactly what I did in F3. listening to the DJ talking most of the time. (I guess it's just me, while playing GTA, I'd always put on in-game radio talk shows)

Too bad the DJ and most of the songs in Fallout 3 were just annoying. Not to mention the radio stuff got repeative really really fast. If the game lasts about 20-100 hours depending how much the player explores you really need to have more than a handful of songs and more than just DJ with the same stuff... I was bored and sick of the radio station after like 5 hours of gameplay.

In GTA there's just so many different songs and dj's to keep you entertained. And yes I know, having 10 different channels in wasteland isn't really realistic :)
