RPGmasterBoo
Yeah, what the hell is going on? What's behind this actually? Amok: Although commonly used in a colloquial and less-violent sense, the phrase is particularly associated with a specific sociopathic culture-bound syndrome in Malaysian culture. In a typical case of running amok, a male who has shown no previous sign of anger or any inclination to violence will acquire a weapon and, in a sudden frenzy, will attempt to kill or seriously injure anyone he encounters. Amok episodes of this kind normally end with the attacker being killed by bystanders, or committing suicide. The syndrome of "Amok" is found in the DSM-IV TR.[4] I know its an asian thing, but even so its a bit much. Walsingham
The weird thing is that many commentators are blaming the rapid pace of change, and feeling of powerlessness and alienation in modern China. This is weird because it's essentially the symptoms of a 'futsie' (future shocked) person in the comic Judge Dredd. Futsies have been in the comic as long as I can remember. "It wasn't lies. Doesn't explain the copycats and going postal is not just an asian thing. Walsh@: But a lot of societies have undergone rapid changes in the past and feelings of alienation, none tried to connect by copying murder. Also it's not completely random violence, the targets are children. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.
Moose
I guess if you're put into the world of Soylent Green, blame lies with the breeders in society, and the easy way to hurt them is to stab their children. How's that for a theory. There are none that are right, only strong of opinion. There are none that are wrong, only ignorant of facts

lord of flies
The rule of international finance capital strikes the Chinese people once more, this time by pushing the citizens of China to the point of committing acts of violence against their nation's children. Oblarg
The rule of international finance capital strikes the Chinese people once more, this time by pushing the citizens of China to the point of committing acts of violence against their nation's children. But let's blame communism and "those wacky asians" instead. I do hope you're trolling. Criminals exist in every society, and I highly doubt these murders are at all related to Western economics. Not that the earlier posts were reasonable, mind you. The post quote from Boo that explains a very select act predominately executed by Asians? Seriously? Careful, Hurlshot may puke on you. Jeez I was just relaying what the wikipedia article said, and noted a recent case on these parts that seems to be similar. This may clear up the issue. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amok The explanation which is now most widely accepted is that amok is closely related to male honor (amok by women is virtually unknown). In many cases where the background of the amok-runner is known, there seems to have been some element of deep shame which prevented the man from living honorably, as he saw it, in his own society. Running amok was both a way of escaping the world (since perpetrators were normally killed) and re-establishing one's reputation as a man to be feared and respected. Some observers have related this explanation to Islam's ban on suicide, which, it is suggested, drove Malay men to create circumstances in which others would kill them. Evidence for this explanation is that the incidence of amok seems to be less where amok runners are captured and tried, rather than being beaten to death on the spot. Amok is often described as a culture-bound (or culture-specific) syndrome,[6][7] which is a psychological condition whose manifestation is strongly shaped by cultural factors. Other reported culture-bound syndromes are latah and koro. Amok is also sometimes considered one of the subcategories of dissociative disorders (cross-cultural variant).Behaviour strongly reminiscent of amok is also found in Western societies, and indeed the term is often used to refer to the behaviour of someone who, in the grip of strong emotion, obtains a weapon and begins attacking people indiscriminately, often with multiple fatalities. The slang term going postal is similar in intent and more common today, particularly in North America. Police describe such an event as a killing spree. If the individual is seeking death an alternate method is often suicide by cop. lord of flies
@ everyone who thinks "international finance capital" means "western imperialism": congrats, you're even more mired in 19th century thinking than me. the bourgeoisie has gradually edged out huge numbers non-bourgeoisie ruling elements across the planet, whether they be feudal lords, reactionary kings or theocrats. they have replaced, systematically and unhesitatingly, every one of these wannabe capitalists that they could get their sticky little fingers around. Bourgeois culture is not the culture of a nation or people, it is the culture of the investor. the internationalism of the bourgeoisie can only be defeated by the internationalism of the proletariat: that is, by the systematic rejection of the concepts of cultural reaction, i.e. the hatred of other peoples.
