Subtitles are awesome. Mainly because they DON'T amputate an extremely important part of an actor's toolset. The Germans, French and the Italians must be insane to put up with it on a routine basis. At least Hollywood just does a knockoff with American actors.

Of the top of my head, and I'm not ranking any of these as must see movies:

Moon had great set design and soundtrack but the story was pretty obvious and needed a much sharper ending.

District 9 was amusing. At first I thought it was going to be overly sanctimonious, but they did put a story in there.

I enjoyed the CGI in Terminator Salvation, but it was weak over all.

Unfortunately I don't think the last decade was very good for Sci-Fi films.

Ironically Serenity sent me to sleep.

Oh and I liked the first half of I am Legend, when it sort of resembled the Vincent Price version. It went downhill after he killed his zombie dog though.

Lemme jog your memory:

IMDB tells us that there have been no less than 298 Sci Fi films in the last decade. Here they are:

http://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=sc...le_type=feature

I've seen a hundred of those, or so IMDB says.

That list is flawed. How the heck does The Tuxedo - a jackie chan kungfu spy comedy - qualify as sci-fi?

IMDB's filtering system is pretty good, but the occasional mistake does happen.

Eg: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind isn't on the list at all.

The Last Starfighter was great, and had the best sci-fi villain of all time:

xurq.jpg

Also, Masters of the Universe. Movie might have been cheese overall, but movie Skeletor was an amazing villain, perfectly acted as well, and blew away his moronic comic book counterpart.

And then there's Dune... a movie that broke with some of the book lore quite significantly, but still managed to remain true to it - and happened to spawn one of my all-time favourite games. One might even consider Krull sci-fi.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

What i do not understand though is the hate against Ghost in the Shell. Did you guys which the english dub? if so, kill yourselves already.
Hun Dub was so awesome, the TV Channel that aired it was pestered to do it again, NOW.

Hun...Hungarian dub? Oh man, sounds like something you would try to just for teh lulz :p

Hey hey, I never understood why a lot of famous movies were hated until I saw them with their original dub (Revenge of the Sith for example), and those weren't made by the best dubbing studio (GitS OTOH was), so don't be dissin' one of the few things this ****ty country does right! :p

While I like both GitS films, its undeniable that they suffer from acute verbal diarrhea, that the characters are paper thin and that the actual plot is a simplistic thriller obscured by techno babble.

Much like the Matrix, it implies philosophical depth where there is none.

Nevertheless I enjoyed all of those films.

That said, Innocence is quite good on an aesthetic level which is the only reason its included on my list. It and/or K-Pax might get dropped in favor of Children of Men after I watch that film again and make up my mind about it.

Yes, by the time the "twist" is revealed you already know or suspect all about it. Its also a bit too nonsensical for my tastes.

Pity as I was really looking forward to it. I wasn't disappointed... but it was nothing exceptional.

While the first one was incredible, the second however had a big flaw: The constant references to philosophy by the characters, it was like they were incapable of having a normal conversation. The pacing also felt a bit off as well.

It was incredibly beautiful though and had the same amazing soundtrack as the first.

Here is the summary of watching GiS: something sciency, Motoko's boobs, shootout, Motoko's boobs, Images of the web and some life changing realization that goes over everyone's head and Motoko's boobs. Is basically a Sci-fi hentai, since no one gets it.

Edit: seeing the list I remembered. Renaissance was a good movie, very unique visual style.

Immortel was a good cult film. Specially if you watched Kung Pow.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Are you alright? The amount of nudity in GitS is next to minimal, and when it is shown, it is not even in an erotic sense.

It is like complaining that "The Shining" is all about blood and violence.

Umm there is quite a bit of nudity which serves no visible purpose in the plot.

District 9 was better than about half the movies on the list. I wouldn't even really consider K-Pax sci-fi.

Yeah, excuses. Pesonally, I think they should be given their freedom.

I can't remember the group verdict on the Resident Evil movies, too lazy to browse backwards in this thread, but I actually quite liked those (bought all 3 on dvd). Sort of sci-fi'ish I suppose.

The first one was kind of meh; okay but nothing great, it's a downward spiral from then on. Why can't Hollywood do a decent video game movie :ninja:

PS: that list of the 200 sci-fi films was complete bollocks. They put "The Legend of Chun Li" there, is it that hard to find 200 good sci-fi movies?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

I haven't played the games, so I didn't have any expectations before watching the first one. Same deal with Silent Hill

I think the list just throws out everything that's been tagged as having a sci-fi element (which SF:tLoCL does) without regard to whether its really a "sci fi" story (or in fact any good).

That said if you like bad movies, "The Legend of Chun-Li" is fun to watch. Chris Klien in particular is amazing to behold. Nash out!

On the contrary, I just can't find a purpose for animated ones.

@Orogun1: dude, those are filtered IMDB power search results, not a list of any sort. Its only purpose is for reference. I use it to see which highly (user) rated titles slipped under my radar, nothing more.

All the Resident Evil movies are garbage, but fun to watch with friends. There is an animated one as well, though I can't remember the name. Its also crap.
