jaguars4ever Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 There's a big difference between an arcade shmup(that's tautology btw) and a tactically sound and challenging rpg. There's a case to be made for hard rpgs, but unfortunately those often translate to metagaming, chartology and munchkinism when it comes to gameplay. Blade of Darkness and Demon's Souls have to be the most brutally difficult RPG-esque games devised by mankind*! * See what I did there? No mere woman could pull off a North Cross - South Cross - Northern Lights decapitation evisceration.
WDeranged Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 There's a big difference between an arcade shmup(that's tautology btw) and a tactically sound and challenging rpg. Yeah but like I said, it's a start...until recently you couldn't even find a challenging new arcade shmup, now there's loads of them.
Purkake Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Requires free 20 GB HD space? **** off! People are still complaining about games taking up space? Hard drives are dirt cheap these days, you can get a 500GB one for $50 with free shipping.
Morgoth Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I hardly give a flying crap about challenging combat these days anymore. Those who try just fail because they're lazy and implement it wrong, and those who actually make it challenging and fun, don't exist anymore. Rain makes everything better.
Maria Caliban Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 My point was that the average dude is not better than the average reviewer. And both are idiots who couldn't handle the hardcore tactical RPG combat that Obsidian forumites breeze through. Now give me a second while I get my mana up so I can lay down my 7/8 giant wyrm. "When is this out. I can't wait to play it so I can talk at length about how bad it is." - Gorgon.
Purkake Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Aren't most of the Bio boards people pretty casual about combat and tactics stuff? I heard that all they want to do is have romances and give gifts.

She should be grateful for the one note that she's given.
Purkake Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Then clear up some space by deleting some porn? That 20GB is what you pay for prettier full 1920x1200 textures and shorter load times.
jaguars4ever Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Hey, leave my titillating effigies out of this! Maybe if you came home more often, I wouldn't need my porn!
Maria Caliban Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Aren't most of the Bio boards people pretty casual about combat and tactics stuff? I heard that all they want to do is have romances and give gifts. Surprisingly, a large number of people who prefer romances and gifts have left the BioBoards for the BioSocial Network. Also: "When is this out. I can't wait to play it so I can talk at length about how bad it is." - Gorgon.
Amentep Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Personally, I want combat to be fun. Don't care about the difficulty per se; too hard or too easy though is probably going to down the fun factor. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Maybe if you came home more often, I wouldn't need my porn! One of us needs to actually make money. Who's going to put little Johnny through college?
Maria Caliban Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 So deviantart is actually the BioSocial network? I guess it makes sense if you think about it... Your inability to comprehend is noted. "When is this out. I can't wait to play it so I can talk at length about how bad it is." - Gorgon.
Syraxis Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Surprisingly, a large number of people who prefer romances and gifts have left the BioBoards for the BioSocial Network. Also: Don't they flame each other about said romances also?

Nope, you just got to read the 'what makes an rpg a rpg' arguments that pop up every few weeks, then there's a lot of masterbaiting over BG threads, hating of Bethesda.(Hmm that sound familiar...) It's just the romance fans are quite often louder or to put it correctly, post mad. That being said the bio boards probably wouldn't be worth visiting without them. Surprisingly, a large number of people who prefer romances and gifts have left the BioBoards for the BioSocial Network. Which will eventually replace the Bio boards. Creating the unholy union once again.

Malcador Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Apparently the early reviews are good, from PC Gamer UK and France. Why has elegance found so little following? Elegance has the disadvantage that hard work is needed to achieve it and a good education to appreciate it. - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra
213374U Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Now give me a second while I get my mana up so I can lay down my 7/8 giant wyrm. I see your giant wyrm and raise you some cheese. Also: IIRC, Aimo used to post here. She had quite a few KotOR (I/II) romance drawings too. Personally, I want combat to be fun. Don't care about the difficulty per se; too hard or too easy though is probably going to down the fun factor. What's "hard" for you may be plain impossible for a "casual player". If you have a degree of veterancy (apparently that's not a word, heh) in games that require tactical thinking, you have an important head start, and the difficulty curve is completely different for you. Once you have learned the particularities of the game, you're good to go. How does the difficulty slider change the game? Does it prevent enemies from using special abilities? Does it simplify their tactics somehow? Or does it just decrease the damage they deal and increase damage dealt by the player? - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.
alanschu Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Are you calling us not-hardcore? We're as hardcore as they come, those Bio boards pansies haven got nothing on us! I'm saying I expect even the hardcore to have some challenges in this game. There were definitely fights I needed to "metagame" by dying first in order to figure out some tactics on what to do during the fight. As I got better at the game and learned the abilities and spells, as well as the bestiary, I died less, but on the whole I still found the game pretty challenging on Normal (PC version).
Slowtrain Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 There is no death in game so who cares if the game is hard? It's not like there is any penalty for failing. This is an absurd statement and true of any game that lets you save anywhere. Not really. In a crpg where party members can die, you not only have to win through an encounter, you have to win through keeping everyone alive. Unless you are willing to just write them off and move on. Which is always an option, but not one many are going to take. Plus eventually you'll run out of party members. In a gamer where party members can't die, you no longer have to concern yourself winning and keeping everyone alive, you only have to concern yourself with winning. Combat becomes much easier in that situation, and difficulty becomes less of an issue. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.
Purkake Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 So basically it's super special hard and more causal people will get steamrolled and then thrown to the wayside.
jaguars4ever Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I seem to have rather fond memories of single handedly driving away one of these Bio-weenie-Kotor-romance-scribblers away from these boards following the epic events of a certain thread that has long been entombed in halls of infamy. Ah, those were the days...
Slowtrain Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 So basically it's super special hard and more causal people will get steamrolled and then thrown to the wayside. No one knows how hard it is. Or how people will react. Some games are hard, some games are easy. That's the way its always been. Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. That's really my point; hard is subjective so if its fun it'll at least give me something to latch onto (even if the combat doesn't really get "easier") I cannot - yet I must.
