I got burned by Bioware Premium Modules, don't wanna get burned again...

Huh? Did you buy them via the store or in the Kingmaker pack? I have the latter and they seemed fine to me... =]

There's nothing confirmed about DRM yet. The initial source for the release date also said the DRM would be a one-off internet activation during installation, but an absolute limit of three computers for installation, with no way of de-activating. An Ossian dev posted on the forum that he hadn't heard of this before, and would take it up with Atari. I would be rather surprised if Atari went with something so eye-catchingly draconian, so most likely this is a mistake and we'll get the right info soon.

But weren't they the publisher for the new Riddick game? :wowey:

*sighs*

In 18 months they could release more than 3 adventure packs, if they would not be stupid enough to craft such ****ty DRM...

Some people realy hate earning more money...

I really don't understand how a company can seriously endorse an non-refundable activation limit in a world where OS's get reinstalled fairly frequently, simply due to malware, hardware failures, configuration issues, and general once a year maintenance.

meh.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Well, frankly I don't blame them.

In these trying economic times, companies are trying very hard to minimize spending and bring in as much revenue they possible. 21st century entertainment-business wisdom seems to dictate that pissing off and driving away customers is the most efficient and promising way to maximize revenue. Also bear in mind, Atari's primary competition is the behemoth EA, who has refined the process of screwing customers to an art form. Smaller companies like Atari can only hope to learn and keep up.

Kudos to them.

because they really, truly, think that piracy decreases revenue, DRM counteracts that effect, and second-hand sales are a problem. they can't see the forest through the trees: it costs them more sales up front from people that won't deal with it and the pirates ultimately get around the DRM/activation limitations anyway.

remember the old skool games? bard's tale 2 had HOLES IN THE DISK for copy protection!!! amazing. i bet i still have one of the 5 1/4" floppies somewhere to check them. :)

Crap, now I'm in a dilemma. I really really wanted to buy Westgate to show my support for Ossian because I like 'em and they've been shafted pretty bad by the whole debacle.

Groar.

And there goes my interest... :)

Mine too... the chances of my purchase of the Mysteries of Westgate have just decreased to near zero. Of course, the word 'near' is only there to account for the slight chance that they might change it and I will hear about it, which seems rather unlikely, since even if they do change it, I will be unlikely to hear about it, given that I will no longer follow any news about MoW from this point on.

That's Atari for you.

What do they care. I mean they have so many other games that what AD&D role playing must be nothing but pocket change for them. If it weren't, they would have stayed on top of things and made sure that not only the PC but Macs and Linux users would be able to play as well.

I have heard this fear of second sales said before. How can they justify someone who for what ever reasons after playing the game decide that they don't want it? Oh, right. That's what the DL is for. I got it now. Don't let the team that's making this game for you make it on a disc. Put a lot of fire hoops for people to jump through just to install it. Then when the end user is done with the game they have a choice. Keep it or delete it. Vola, no more second hand sales.

Nice how companies think about making life harder than what it is.

Solo is not a myth to evil.

But a nighmare to the evil of the lands.

not good idea, because if you pay for the product, it means you agree with everything given to you, including DRM... I am one of people who things not buying gives bigger notice to publishers that you disagree with them than buying and cracking...

I'm just curious about why they don't just use what was done for MOTB/SOZ on the Atari DD store.

As far as I've noticed with my purchases of those, it's just an installer file and a cd key.

Ah, the good ole days where copy protection could be circumvented with a piece of tape.

you wouldn't believe the rigmarole we went through to get our BT2 copy to run. i will never understand how my brothers and i figured out how to get the copy to load (we had a legit version that would not load at all).

the first BT, btw, required you to answer questions from the book. guess they didn't think people would find a way to copy the book... you know, photo-copiers and all that being around since nearly the middle ages.
