Gfted1 Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Official: Man wasn't a 'credible threat' to Obama Aug 26, 8:14 AM (ET) By STEVEN K. PAULSON DENVER (AP) - Authorities are investigating whether a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck made statements threatening Barack Obama, but emphasize he never posed a "credible threat" to the candidate or the Democratic National Convention. Federal and local authorities had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, but U.S. Attorney Troy Eid downplayed the case. "We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," Eid said in a statement. FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright confirmed the FBI was investigating reports the man had threatened Obama, who will be in Denver this week to accept the Democratic nomination for president. The Joint Information Center - a command set up by city, state and federal authorities to field media inquiries during the Democratic convention - said it had no immediate comment. One of the men arrested told KCNC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver, that others involved in the case had made racist statements regarding Obama and had discussed killing Obama on the day of his nomination acceptance speech. When asked if he felt there was a plot to kill Obama, Nathan Johnson said, "Looking back at it, I don't want to say yes, but I don't want to say no." Johnson was interviewed while being held in jail on drug charges. He said he wasn't involved in any plot. The action started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when police in the eastern suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically. The driver, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, had a suspended driver's license, and the truck was rented in the name of another person, said Aurora police Detective Marcus Dudley. In the truck, officers found two rifles, including one with a scope; a bulletproof vest; boxes of ammunition; walkie-talkies; and suspected narcotics, Dudley said. Aurora police, on edge because of heightened security surrounding the Democratic convention in Denver, alerted federal authorities. Three hours later, at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, federal agents arrested Johnson, 32, at a hotel in Denver. He was being held on drug charges, Dudley said. A half-hour after that, 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf jumped from a sixth-story window when authorities tried to arrest him at a hotel in suburban Glendale, police said. Adolf was hospitalized and was being held on $1 million bond for several outstanding warrants involving drug charges. Dudley didn't say what tied the men together but said more arrests were possible. One of the rifles was stolen, and authorities had traced it to Kansas, Dudley said. It wasn't known if the three men had attorneys, Dudley said. Dudley said Gartrell was being investigated for methamphetamine and firearms violations. Gartrell, who has no known address, was being held at the Arapahoe County jail on $50,000 bail on drug and weapons charges. The jail said he was due in court Thursday. SteveThaiBinh Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Sarah Palin seems nice enough (if you're not a moose, I guess). Anyone know anything about her? "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." (Nina Kalenkov)
Meshugger Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) A very smart choice by McCain. It will most likely steal some thunder from the Obama camp, and she will especially be something of interest for Hillary-supporters. Personally however, i really disagree with her stances on most of things. She is: - Pro-life (Argh!) - Anti-stemcell research (Plain stupid!) - Pro-creationism (Go back to school and read the differences between science and philosophy, you mongrel!) Also she is very pro-gun, and i don't mean pro-gun by that she just supports the right to bear arms (which i usually don't mind, hell i even support that) i am talking about teachers-should-have-guns-in-classrooms-ted-nugent-style, which is downright scary. I do have to give it for her for fighting against corruption and wanting to keep power more decentralized. All in all, a wise choice by McCain. Hat's off to him. P.S. But goddamn, what.a.milf. Moatilliatta Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 P.S. But goddamn, what.a.milf. Low standards? I think Palin could potentially be a crappy choice since she doesn't seem very experienced. I'm officially in the euro-dude for Obama camp now even if his rethoric is scary sometimes.
Deadly_Nightshade Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Anyone know anything about her? Well, I disagree with her on several key policy issues - id est abortion and creationism- but don't really know too much about her... "Geez. It's like we lost some sort of bet and ended up saddled with a bunch of terrible new posters on this forum." -Hurlshot
Enoch Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) I think she'll be a great asset to the campaign-- she'll knock 'em dead on the talk shows and townhall meetings. And it helps McCain politically that she has absolutely no voting record on Bush administration policies. But I can't see voters getting too comfortable with the idea of her a heartbeat away from the presidency, and with a 73-year-old candidate who has had some major health issues, that's a pretty important question. taks Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) I think Palin could potentially be a crappy choice since she doesn't seem very experienced. the veep doesn't need XP points. he/she can be a first level politician. veeps don't do anything worthwhile in office since they hold no real power. their sole purpose is PR, and a chick veep counters the whole "first black candidate" thing since no matter what, we get a "first" out of this election. taks PS: i should modify: the primary purpose of the veep is to be there if POTUS takes an early dirt nap. nobody ever considers that as the role unless the candidate is highly controversial. for example, had mccain picked billary, he'd win the election and then get shot dead the day after inauguration. Moatilliatta Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) So you don't think he is dismantling his main argument against Obama - lack of experience? Also what will happen when she doesn't know enough about domestic issues because she has spend her time in Alaska spending all the state's money and apparently playing though against the old guard? I could be wrong but she doesn't seem like a good choice to me. I'm not an expert on America or anything but won't there be VP debates where Biden will rip Palin apart? Also how do you think Hillary will respond to another Woman getting that close to the white house before her while acting like she finishes what Hillary started? I have no reason to belive that this will help McCain in any way. Edit: Also won't the VP get more important since McCain is an antediluvian and has health issues? taks Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 So you don't think he is dismantling his main argument against Obama - lack of experience? Also what will happen when she doesn't know enough about domestic issues because she has spend her time in Alaska spending all the state's money and apparently playing though against the old guard? I could be wrong but she doesn't seem like a good choice to me. uh, not sure what part of my comment you missed, but the most important was that nobody cares about veep experience. ever. obama's lack of experience is much more important since he has to stack up against mccain directly. veeps are side items that sway only a few percentage points, if that even. I'm not an expert on America or anything but won't there be VP debates where Biden will rip Palin apart? i can't recall the veep debate ever making a difference. it'll be hard for biden to rip apart a woman, too. she'll get sympathy points if he does. Also how do you think Hillary will respond to another Woman getting that close to the white house before her while acting like she finishes what Hillary started? mccain/palin is the republican ticket, why does hillary matter? she has no mandate on being the first woman in office, and if anything, she's tainted by everything that happened with bill. had the dems wanted her, she'd be up front now, not obama. if anything, the fact that the dems snubbed hillary, and then obama didn't pick her may sway the "i want a woman in power" voting bloc (which does exist) towards mccain. I have no reason to belive that this will help McCain in any way. you've already stated that you're no expert on america, so i guess i couldn't care less about your opinion on how this helps/hurts mccain. hint: my point is that yours is just an opinion, but american opinions are more important since they are the ones voting in november. Edit: Also won't the VP get more important since McCain is an antediluvian and has health issues? no. obama may try to make it one, but it's not that big of a deal. it didn't matter with reagan, and his second in command was scary (remember, too, biden isn't exactly a spring flower at 65). taks comrade taks... just because.
Pop Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Smart move though, probably. It's not like this election's going to be decided on policy. Moatilliatta Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I do realize that my opinion may be incorrect but I do believe that I have a point. Hillary clinton will be important if she chooses to go out against Palin because a lot of people who want a woman in office are the same people (in my admittedly limited experience) who likes Hillary and drawin in Hillary goons is the only important bonus to Palin as far as I can see. Hillary could stay completely quiet but she doesn't seem like that person to me. Also wasn't Reagans VP (G. H. W. Bush right?) significantly more experienced than a 2 year governor of a state that is relatively atypical fro America? i can't recall the veep debate ever making a difference. it'll be hard for biden to rip apart a woman, too. she'll get sympathy points if he does. She will look the lesser VP at least unless Biden screws up. I guess we'll see how it goes. So do you think Palin can do more than try to sway some women-in-white-house voters? I doubt that she will get any cross Hillary voters after Hillary's Denver speech.

taks Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 (edited) Also wasn't Reagans VP (G. H. W. Bush right?) significantly more experienced than a 2 year governor of a state that is relatively atypical fro America? he was ex-CIA and scared the hell out of everybody, but nobody cared (and reagan was elected anyway), which is ultimately my point. keep in mind with GHWB, reagan didn't even want the guy. the party "chose" bush for him. I guess we'll see how it goes. i've got history on my side: everybody talks like it matters yet it never does. i'm guessing that a) given that you aren't american you haven't paid that close of attention the past 30 years and b) you might not be old enough to have been paying close attention anyway (i have been, and i'm 40). So do you think Palin can do more than try to sway some women-in-white-house voters? I doubt that she will get any cross Hillary voters after Hillary's Denver speech. there aren't that many that really care, actually. she may sway a percentage or two that want a woman only, but might piss off a few here and there as well (a net zero, in other words). however, i've already noted that there isn't much a veep can do other than a few points anyway so it doesn't matter. the only choice that i think DID matter was the "obama-clinton" camp, which obama definitely alienated. my guess is that those folks aren't going mccain, but they're going to not vote at all. either way, my ultimate point is that veep doesn't matter except in extreme cases. taks Edited August 29, 2008 by taks comrade taks... just because.
