I want to rant a little about my feelings for Alien 3. I mean, holy crap, did they even do screen tests for this movie? Who in their right mind would enjoy the way this stinker started out? The world is just full of big-time Aliens fans, but who cares? All those people who went thru hell & back to survive Aliens... ya, well F 'em. We'll just brutally end Hicks and Newt and even Bishop - but no worries, we'll have a Bishop look-alike show up later in the film, and things will be just peachey. And won't it just be fun to have Ripley examine Newt while she's all cold, and laid out on a slab? I especially appreciated what they did to Hicks's face. I've had a crush on Michael Biehn since I was a little girl, so this was just AWESOME  . I mean, you can't stick a film done by David Fincher in the same catagory as one done by Scott or Cameron, so I didn't really expect an epic, but couldn't they have thought up a better way for Ripley to end up on some god-forsaken prison **** hole of a planet (if you really HAVE to go there). Did I miss anything?

P.S.

the ONLY cool scene in this movie...

Check out my KOTOR fan vids on YouTube. And no, they're not of legos.

i remember coming across an old unused script where it was on a wooden satellite...

I liked it

Not sure how much the theatrical version differed from the extended/dc version (which I saw). The only major gripe was the crappy cgi four-legged alien itself. Completly unbelievable effects.

Wasn't it supposed to be some kind of monastery originally?

The only Alien film I *really* dislike is the fourth one. Mostly because of Winona Ryder who displayed all the acting talent of Hayden Christensen in that movie. Not that I have seen her in many movies (I think the last one was Beetlejuice).

Of all the Alien movies, including AvP, Alien 3 is imho the biggest pile of dung in the series.

Only things I liked about Alien 3:

-The atmosphere and setting.

-Many people think the Alien in A3 looked lame, but I actually think it looked pretty cool.

They really should have just dropped Ripley, Newt, Hicks & Bishop and gone with new characters for Alien 3/Resurrection. I don't know what it is with horror series bringing back the main protagonist over and over as I feel horror often works better with new characters to experience the monster/event.

That's what I'd expect the RPG to be. Although I did read that all the principle voice talent (Sigourney Weaver, Lance Henricksen) had been signed on for VA. Don't know how that could fit into Aliens: Colonial Marines.

My ex-boyfriend had a copy of the original A3 script, which was GREAT. Had they stuck to that, and the semi-anti-religious overtones it had I think it would have turned out well. 3 suffered from too many script changes and story changes and execs wanting the story changed.

That said, The opening sequence of A3 is my favorite opening scene of all time. Period. Pure awesome. <3 And Elliot Goldenthal's score is awesome. If they could get him to score music for this game, it would be HEVAN!

I liked it. Not as much as its predecessors, but still. It had great atmosphere, and I think the concept was pretty good too. I didn't like the way they did away with Newt and Hicks, though. Death in a crash landing is something that happens in the real world, not in sci-fi... but I liked what was done with Bishop.

I think they might have overdone the FX, too. Both 1 and 2 rarely had clear shots of the critters, arguably due to visual effects limitations, but they turned that into an advantage.

The movie did have some really awful sequences, what with playing tag with the bug and all...

I didn't think it was very good, but at least there were no dual wielding space pirates like in Alien 4.

That is all.

I like Alien 3 as it ended up but I agree that (at least on paper) the Monestry script was much better. The Jaws'esc wheatfield scene would have been a classic.

The longer cut on the Alien DVD collection is by no means perfect, but I think it generally works much better than the theatrical release.

I was all in all happy with the return to the more classic horror of Alien 1, but the main problem with the film is that it's not as scary as it needs to be. It also showcases the Alien way to much instead of keeping it in the shadows.

It IS beautifully shot however.

I would say that I like the overall direction (and I suppose genre) and setting of Alien 3 way more than Aliens. But Aliens is just a better film, despite the fact that I don't really like where it went in terms of the Alien setting itself.

It didn't bother me at all that they offed the characters from Aliens. If they have to keep Ripley for the series, then I think it was generally a good move in order to keep her properly tortured. :ermm: I like it better when Ripley is basically "alone", with noone near that she can *really* trust or relate to. I was not a big fan of Hicks or Newt (though I didn't dislike them), so that was not a particularly "shocking" move to me.

I enjoyed it. It just didn't compare very well to the first two movies.

Considering Fincher's the man who gave us Se7en and Fight Club, you bet your ass you can stick one of his movies in the same category as Scott or Cameron. Cameron especially.

Yes, Fight Club and Se7en were great films. :lol:I still wouldn't put him up there with those other two, but this is just my personal opinion.

I'm actually pretty shocked by how many more people like this film vs how many dislike it (so far). I don't think I've ever met anybody in person who's admited that they liked it. I learn something new every day . :)

Well, Ridley Scott is an uneven director if I ever saw one and James Cameron has done a lot of crap over the years, so I don't see how they're these unassailable figures.

defenately NOT unassailable! Just - better directors than David Fincher - and again this is just my personal opinion. :ermm:

I thought Alien 3 was a horribly broken piece of film-making. Pure trash. I never thought David Fincher would become anything after that.. :ermm:

Of course, his next movie was Se7en.. :ermm:

OK - let's bring this topic back on course. I was not trying to offend all of you David Fincher fans with this poll, so if I have, I apologize. :ermm: But can we at least, MAYBE agree that Scott and Cameron had better Alien movies than he did? Maybe I should have done a "which Alien movie was the absolute worst?" poll instead. :ermm:

Heh, I saw the first Terminator a "zillion" times because of him. And yeah, I was disappointed with the way A3 dealt with their characters like that. On the other hand, at least they acknowledged the characters at all, instead of just pretending they weren't around at the end of the 2nd or something, as sequels sometimes do.

I hated A3 when I saw it in the theater. On subsequent viewings, I found myself slowly and begrudgingly respecting it to a certain degree - mostly for things others have already mentioned, like atmosphere, camera work, alien design, etc. But I can't say I truly like it. I can watch it without wanting to desperately turn it off, however, unlike with A4.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.

The directors cut of Alien 3 seems more cohesive in a lot of ways -- I'd recommend watching it if you are an Aliens fan. It's certainly not as good as Alien or Aliens, but it has some positives.

Thanks for the awesome avatar Jorian!

Maybe I should have done a "which Alien movie was the absolute worst?" poll instead. :p
4 wins hands down.

I hated the third one. I watched it again a fews years ago, much better the second time :shrugz:

I can watch Alien 4 alright.. at least up until the thong scene.. Then I turn it off.

I thought it was ok. I liked the desolate, isolated atmosphere.

I actually thought Aliens was pretty silly towards the end. After showcasing the Aliens as lethal killing machines throughout the entire movie, suddenly the Aliens can't stop a lone Ripley who just charges into the queen's hive? It was a cool movie though.
