16 Blocks (Thats a remake of The Gauntlet right?)

An "ok" movie. The ending was so contrived. I mean, who didnt see the old "Ill record every word you say while you inexplicably describe in great deatil all the illegal stuff youve done" ending coming when he found the recorder on the bus.

I finally rented Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. It's the Will Ferrell NASCAR movie with Sacha Baron Cohen as the villain.

There were a few good laughs, most specifically the cougar and the "Highlander" joke.

Subtle foreshadowing it was not.

Saw "300" I had no idea what it was going to be about... so I was pleasantly surprised... I guess it's good to go into thing oblivious every once in a while. I can see why some people didn't like it, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Rented Borat... since I'm not a 12 year old I didn't really find it all that entertaining... more insulting than anything.

Tonight I'll watch "Ginger Snaps 2" looking for some mindless entertainment.

300 is about the 300 Spartans that stayed at the pass of Thermopylae when the rest of Greek army retreated to save themselves from being killed by the Persian army. The battle lasted 3 days the first 2 days the Greeks held off the Persians, but the third day the Persians found away around the pass and marched to attack Leonidas from behind. There was also a naval battle, the Persian emperor wanted to land troops behind Leonidas. Thomisticus prevented the the Persian navy from doing so. After Leonidas is defeated the Persian Army burns Athens then heads to Sparta. Thomisticus retreats to Sparta and ambush the Persian navy and destroys enough ships that Persia has to retreat. If the Persian Army had to retreat because if the navy lost any more ships then the arm would not be able to return home.

Borat is supposed to be a commentary on racism and social inequality. The movie's humor is directed towards an older audience than crude humor comedys.

Children of Dune

that the miniseries one?

I've been thinking about grabbing that as well. it was pretty good (and the chick who plays Alia is hot)

The miniseries was pretty damn good. I would have liked if Jennifer would have gotten more screen time(favorite character), but besides that it was a great series.

It was good, wasn't it? I turned over and saw it one night when I hadn't even heard it had been filmed and thought "Hmmm, this is familiar, isn't this Dune? Where's Kyle MacLachlan and Sting?" Happily, they were both absent. I'm almost glad the first film was such a disaster - I've heard they'd intended to make the full six books before it bombed, and MacLachlan had actually signed up for that. Though the closing credits music was rather good.

My only problem with the Dune miniseries was Alec Newman. Awful actor. Just terrible. Everyone else was fantastic except him. Which sucked since he was the main character.

Yeah, he was dull, but didn't degrade the series for me. Fortunately, Children of Dune doesn't have him very much and the parts he's in, he plays a minor role.

Yeah Alia is, hot but in the first part Alia was supposed to be 15. the actress that played her was way too old. In the novel Ali does her fight training naked but I guess they can't put that on television. :teehee:

If you've read the novels Paul Atreides is only a character in novels 1,2,3,7, and maybe 8 but I don't know yet because #7 Hunters of Dune came out about a month or two ago so #8 Sandworms of Dune will be out in at least a year.

There are at least 3 versions of dune I've only seen the most recent 6 hoar miniseries version that was made for the Sci fi channel. Their is only one version of Children of Dune that I know of.

Dune was the most viewed movie in the Sci Fi channel's History.

Yeah, I'm sure all of the grownups really appreciated the nude scene.

Slither (horror comedy) will premiere tomorrow here in Portugal, and I was wondering what you people think. I'm a bit puzzled because the critics seem to have loved it but, despite that, it completely tanked at the box office.

That's not quite correct.

As it was, Xerxes was able to retreat leisurely (it took him over a month-and-a-half* to meander back through Macedon and Thrace, to the Hellespont pontoon-bridges he built to get across from continental Asia to Europe, back to the Persian land); yes he had his Imperial navy, too, but that was for fighting, not for troop transport. (Another story and probably more interesting battle concerning the Athenian's brand new navy of 200 triremes versus the best seamen in the world: the Ph

Oh, I knew all about the battle of Thermopylae... I just didnt' know that 300 was going to be about that... I hadn't even seen a preview for the film so I was really flying blind walking into the theater.

If Borat was intended for an older audience, they really missed the mark. The crude sexual humor, unnecessary nude scenes, fecal matter, ice cream truck, random bear, all have the appeal of a crappy "scary movie 7" style movie. I can't imagine my mother... or anyone else from the baby-boomer generation finding that crap interesting. As far as being a commentary on racism and society... if they had intended to make a point with it... it was lost in their 5 year old potty humor.

As far as my real events of 300 I wrote a general summation of what happened based on what I remembered from the history channel special I saw. I'm vary sure I forgot allot of stuff that happened.

They have to have crude humor in Borat to please the simpletons that don't comprehend the deeper commentary of the plot. If all the scenes were social satire than the movie would loose a large percent of it's audience.

King Ralph, an old silly and not very good comedy.

But as usual, two of the characters were folk I didn't recognize then, but do now. The gal playing King Ralph's stripper love interest was the mum in the new Dr. Who, and the gal playing the royal princess arranged-match for Ralph was the wife in Nip/Tuck.

I'm beginning to like watching old movies just for this recognize-the-actor stuff.

The film made some fairly reasonable political conflations (it's barely possible to write out the convoluted political affairs of Sparta, with her two simultaneously reigning Kings, the Ephors, the Gerousia (senate), their adherence to the Delphic Oracle and their overriding obedience to the Laws of Lycurgus). After all, it was just an action film. All the juicy political intrigue is better suited to a book ...

Is that out on DVD yet? I've been dying to see that thing.

It's out in Perth, so it should be out over in America.

Slither is out on DVD in the US... I own it... I find it hysterically funny... along the lines of "Lake Placid" if you are looking for scary you have the wrong film... it's more of a Dark Comedy.

Best line of the film is the two girls "We're itchy"

I watched two movies the other day.

Pumping Iron - the bodybuilding documentary starring Arnold at his ****iest. A must-see, whether you're into weightlifting or not. I couldn't believe how cunning Arnold was in manipulating Lou Ferrigno. He's devious, man, just devious.

A League of Their Own - I've always had a soft spot for this one, so when I saw it was on TV the other day I sat and watched it for longer than I intended. It has of my favorite Tom Hanks roles, fallen star ballplayer Jimmy Dugan, the manager who's a bit too fond of the sauce.
