Movies You Have Seen Lately

I figured out Slevin early on as well. Still good.

I watched The Da Vinci Code and Thank You For Smoking. The former was cool; I found all the sequences where they went into depth on the mystery and the heir very interesting and worthwhile. The latter was spectacular; one of the funniest movies I've seen all year. Micheal Jordan plays ball, Charles Manson kills people, I talk.

This afternoon I'm going to watch Fear and Loathing for the first time! I'm very excited. The book, as everyone knows, is excellent, as is Thompson's other work, so I imagine the movie will be just as good.

Low point: The opening credits. Chris Cornell's theme was TERRIBLE. It was damn-near embarassing to be in a packed theater when it came on. People laughed at it more than they laughed at the Rocky Balboa trailer. That was harsh

My theater liked the credits, but they did initially laugh at Rocky. I walked away thinking Rocky might be decent tho.

It's sad that I enjoyed the phrase "blunt force trauma".

After watching both CSI:LV and CSI:NY most recent seasons on DVD, I'm rather tired of that phrase... :D

Casino Royale.

Well it is rather different to the usual Bond film like all the hype says. Daniel Craig is definitely a leaner and meaner 007 with depth.  In some ways it reminded me of 24 with the gritty tone of the film. There's no Q, no gadgets, no bad puns or campness of any sort. Also be prepared for the middle act where it becomes a late night poker channel.

honestly? I felt that I was watching Bourne+XXX... I felt that it went way to over the top with the fighting...

Instead of a bunch of running around and pulling spy stuff (gathering intel and such) they had a look at a cell phone, a fight, a look at a computer, a fight, a evil look from a bad guy, a fight, a romancing scene, a man on foot running after a truck, a fight, poker, a fight...

you get the picture.

All the spy stuff felt like it was just a gloss. I donno but I kinda liked it back when bond only ever really fired maybe 12 bullets in the entire film. I'm willing to bet that if you took the exact same script and toned down the violence you'd get a bigger audience.

(the way my dad saw it, they just caused half their fanbase to run away screaming because it was so gritty. And all the blood and violence would cause most women to not see it)

When was this? I only really noticed Bond fighting hand-to-hand starting with Goldeneye. In Casino Royale most of the fights were up close and personal, in the stairwell, in the truck (a pretty overt reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which was kind of funny), in the embassy and in the museum. He only uses his gun towards the end, he loses it in most other scenes. He pulled his Walther much more frequently in the older films.

early reviews on AIN'T are positive

you know you will all watch it

Harry Knowles disproportionately favors those films that he gets to preview early.

But you're right, I probably will see it. While Sly wrote the rightly hated Rocky V (probably the worst sequel ever put on film), he also wrote the original, and Rocky is still the quisessential underdog sports movie. It's not the best movie ever, but it has undeniable charm. The new 'un has potential, but come on, Rocky V.

Well in golden eye you had the huge fight in the cradle's control center. Generally bond hasn't gotten his hand dirty which this bond really didn't mind. (I mean seriously... putting a guy in a choke hold and then pushing his face into a sink full of water in a mens room... isn't that overkill?)

Also they didn't have the traditional scope intro. (cries)

Casino Royale (2006)

Great Bond film. The franchise seems to be back on track. Criag is no Sean Connery, but then again who is. I really loved the novel and the changes the movie made were a little hard to take. But all in all a very good movie.

1) On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)

2) From Russia With Love (1963)

3) Goldfinger (1964)

4) Dr. No (1962)

5) Licence To Kill (1989)

6) Thunderball (1965)

7) The Living Daylights (1987)

 Casino Royale (2006)

I saw it too yesterday and I must say I agree. It was quite refreshing change to bond films, but I do feel that bourne films have done it better.

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

HP: Prisoner of Asskaban.

Slept through parts of it. Again.

I just can't get into these films no matter what I try to tell myself. The secondary actors are great(career wise I mean, because in HP there game is average) but the main ones are very amateurish. Daniel Radcliff looks the part but I've seen more emotions in my sleeping Pug.

This particular film I found particularly sleep-inducing for some reason. Could be the lighting, the darker tones or maybe it's just horribly boring.

Are you saying that James Bond has been re-bourne?

Actually, I'd switch On Her Majesty's Secret Service with From Russia With Love, but other than that, I've gotta say I agree with your list.

Although I think Moonraker should get a top 8 position too. For the campyness.

For campyness it would be #1. Otherwise it is listed as #22
