Oblivion is the best CRPG ever made

we keep within 10 years. anachronox were better and diablo 2 were better at being the kinda game oblivion tries to be. other than bg1, iwd2 and how, we prefer every crpg made by bis and bioware to oblivion.... which is quite a list in and of itself. add in fallout as it were pre-bis.

we took the dare and named far more than 1.

HA! Good Fun!

Though i have enjoyed the game somewhat during my brief testing (less than 200 hours) I must say that this game doesn't even come close to NWN in terms of Aribeth and linear play. Also the voice overs in NWN were far better.

Even if Oblivion has some nice scenery it's nothing compared to the hand drawn landscape of IWD2 and the freshness of a 2d top down isometric view. If you're a true roleplayer and not a min/maxer you will chose any of the above mentioned products over oblivion.

please discuss among yourselves

thanks

Bethseda put out a press release saying Oblivion has already sold 1.7 millon units. That puts NWN and Morrowind to shame in the same timespan.

Somebody posted this in the shack:

"Careful, people.

Read this with great caution. This announces sell-in numbers, not sell-through numbers.

There is a huge difference. Sell-in means that Bethesda has shipped 1.7 million units to stores, but, and this is a big but...it doesn't mean that those copies have, or ever will, sell.

So, as much as this seems like a good thing, there may much less sell-through (the actual numbers of copies that are sold to customers). Which will be a problem later on, as copies sit on shelves, retailers get annoyed, and then return the product to the publisher, who then takes a hit.

I'll be impressed when Bethesda manages to break 1 million sell-through on a nichy RPG like this. In the meantime...this announcement means little."

One thing that made me question Bethesda is that theyve apparently used 3dsMAX character studio* with premade "bipods" to do most of their animations. Thats is not very proffessional.

*character studio is a part of MAX that lets you easily animate walk and run cycles for humanoid characters by supplying readymade bones/skeletons that you just click a few buttons to make them walk. The problem is that its both bugged and gives you less control than if you had made your own rig.

Quantity over quality. It's kind of a TES watchword.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

Well they sold over a million units with Morrowind, if not over two million, I don't see any reason why the guy who posted thought 1 million would be a problem for Oblivion.

Comparing Troika to Ferrari lost you all credit.

I did? That wasn't the intention, i was just pointing out the stupidity in his argument. If you want it that way, then no. It's more like Troika = Bethesda. Why? because:

Troika: Great ideas, bad implementation = mostly meh.

Bethesda: Simple ideas, ok implementation = mostly meh.

Even though both VTM: Bloodlines and Oblivion were mostly meh, it was still a great step forward for them.

I think Oblivion is quite mainstream. Very simple, not much reading required , looks and plays a lot like an FPS.

I'd be suprised if it didnt sell at least a million.

Dosnt hurt that there isnt much else on the 360 of note either. I think that was much the same story with Morrowind on the Xbox.

In general: It's not the best CRPG in ten years. ...But I've spent more time on it than with any other CRPG in the last few years.

My clock shows 60 something hours for two characters.

In all honesty I'd have probably stopped playing sooner if Dragon Quest didnt slip a week. But I have no regrets on either the game or buying the 360 to play the game. It wasnt "great" but it was fun.

Probably would have still been playing it had we not gone on that mad 360 rental spree.

Just so I can be happy smiley :(

One thing that made me question Bethesda is that they've apparently used 3dsMAX character studio* with premade "bipeds"  to do most of their animations. That's is not very professional.

That just means it is not only permissable for you, as a neophyte independent developer, to do the same but that if you actually make your own character models it will be heralded as "brilliant" and "above the curve". :)

To meta:  Showoff.
