Gamespot Rumor: Troika shutting its doors

why would a large company want to purchase Troika? They don't hold any licenses, they've got a proven track record of being un-able to release AAA titles, and they don't have any strong associations with any publishers. A company buying them wouldn't be getting anything other than a bunch of talented people, which they could just hire away anyway once Troika goes under.

I'm sad to see Troika go, but i feel like they did this to themselves through poor management and poor business planning.

"ToEE had multiple endings."

Role-playing is more than multiple endings.

True, but being able to choose your own ending is a lot cooler and more realistic than not being able to. This is one of the few kudos that I give ToEE.

Life is like a clam. Years of filtering crap then some bastard cracks you open and scrapes you into its damned mouth, end of story.

I think that the real losers in this whole situation are the customers who bought Bloodlines and the people who worked at Troika. The bosses definitely aren't losing much, but lots of people are out of a job because of the mismanagement by the higher ups and their inability to get any new contracts.

The customers who bought Bloodlines are essentially doomed to playing an unfinished game that won't be patched because the BL team got laid off. Whether Activision wants to finance a new patch is meaningless, since there isn't anyone to do the job.

edit: In other news it looks like some of the rabid fanboys at the codex ( http://www.rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6348 ) are really pissed off at my comments and are trying every single angle to discount my remarks.

I feel pretty ripped off because I put down RM235 (Malaysian dollars) on it. Technically that's only 235/3.8 because of the transfer rate, but it's equal to 235 US dollars, at least for me. That sucks.

umm...unless i read that wrong....but did you just say you paid the equivalent of 235 US dollars for a game? ;)

In my local currency, RM100 is US$38. Of course, standards of living are much cheaper, so while the average person might make RM2000 a month here, it's just like making $2000 dollars somewhere in the United States. But when the whole transfer rate thing kicks in, it's a real pain in the ass, especially to import stuff like games, because we end up paying an amount of money that would feel similar to how you feel if you had to pay US$235 dollars for a game.

I usually save it for the games I really want to play. Bioware's games, with the exception of NWN, were worth buying, IMO, as well as many of the games that Interplay and Black Isle Studios released. I've also got all of Blizzard's titles.

Man, I thought they sold pirated games over there. That's what my other Malaysian internet buddy does.

Piracy's pretty rampant, but good games deserve your money. Buying pirated won't get you the cool manuals or whatever else besides the games that come in the box, either.

That is a shame since Bloodlines has a lot of potential.

We keep eharing how bloodlines had potential, arcanum had potential, toee had potential.

Why is it that all these games were not able to realize their potential? The answer is simple. Its because Troika didnt have any potential. Thus, it is for the best that they have been shut down.

Not that getting the manual makes much of a difference lately. <_<

Not that they bother printing out a hard copy of the manuals lately. <_<

Who reads manuals anyway?

..maybe they should start putting candy or toys inside, I think that would really push up the buying motivation.

What a sack of gecko ****......

You really believe it??

Troika is alive and well, they're in the middle of developing their new Post-apoc 3d RPG.

And Bloodlines was a FRGGIN" BIG HIT! A masterpiece.

So let all those naysayers shut their filthy traps.

Oh, and about piracy: well, ALL of the post-soviet countries just bathe in piracy! Well, now things are changing: there are some Russian local publishers that take care of licensed trade (like 1C or Buka or Rusobit), but still piracy is everywhere.

And for us, it's kinda funny to read posts like "Goddamn, 3dsmax is soo expensive..." I got the latest 3dsmax for about 5 bucks here.

I know it's bad, and I really feel bad buying it this way, knowing that a company that you love so much will get no money from you, but such is the situation here. Plus, I don't earn much, so I just can't afford a licensed copy.
