Eeeh, there are still some fun shenanigans to discuss, like how blood mage is once again the best wizard build due to how obscene HP stacking is (also, with all the HP regen consumables, and stuff like barbaric shout that gives you temp HP), and that you can wear heavy armor with very little downside, since you cast mainly from HP.

progression is simpler than poe1/deadfire, but honestly BG3/5e has extremely simple progression--like literally almost no choices to be made for many classes--and yet there's no shortage of builds. (there are also more classes, but time will tell if we ever get more via DLC) i think there's build variety potential and we could use a forum space.

I think it is certainly still relevant to include. The trees are very non linear and the way you path through them to assemble a build is still quite involved. Not to mention gear choices too.

Furthermore, I think as space to just discuss the more mechanically focused aspects is important too. How certain abilities work, what abilities are strong, evaluating some more esoteric mechanics etc.

For instance I have been trying to figure out how the summoned weapons work. I would like to know if they scale off level or grimoire quality or both. I can tell they work with some passives, for instance the Parasitic Staff is functionally a Great Hammer meaning it gets the benefits of passives like Brawn or Stunning Blows (untested but I believe this should work). A place to discuss this in depth would be helpful.

yeah, a nice subtle gameplay distinction is that. back in the previews, i thought builds would be pretty samey because I was under the assumption that to dip into another tree you had to start from the beginning (like Deadfire or TTRPG multiclassing, Diablo 2/Skyrim skill trees, Outer Worlds perks). The fact that you can just jump right into the middle (or end!) of a tree so long as you meet the minimum requirements adds an interesting non-linear dimension to it and some interesting setups you can do.

My plan was to build a Ranger mostly but with the Wizard's Blackbow and Spirit of Decay and so on. Unfortunately my progression in the game is veeery slow so far.

The lack of info/explanation/numbers is not helping. I would like a mod that added all that useful info (combat log etc.).

Definitely would be a neat build, ran something like this in Deadfire to good effect. Only thing to note is I have heard many enemies are poison immune (also no Terrify or Bounce on the Blackbow is a huge downside, I know it Pierces but not the same)

I am more set on needing a character build thread now. I learned that when you respec, you basically retain your level. So that means after you spend your 1 mandatory point, you can drop points where ever in the tree up to your level.

Reason this is important is say you are doing a Parasitic Staff build hoping to transition to Spirit Lance. Well once you unlock Spirit Lance you should respec and move your Parasitic Staff points to Spirit Lance because you don't need to progress linearly necessarily.

That means in your builds you probably want to be respeccing at gear or level breakpoints. I will definitely be respeccing at 10 to get Stunning Blow for instance as Parasitic Staff builds dumb amounts of Stun and with its Stun AOE I bet it'd be crazy with Stunning Blows.

I was going for something opposite (spellcaster with a gun), but skills points are far and few between (SkillUp might have not been kidding). I find myself relying more and more on spellcasting, as couple grimories offer just too much of a variety. The only spells I memories so far are Corrosive Siphon and Parasitic Staff for Health and Essence regen. Man, smacking people with a magic stuff is fun in this game.

Oha, that's very useful info, thanks.

I finished first playthrough few days ago. It took me about 75h to listen to all conversations, explore every corner of the maps and finish all sidequests. I did it as pure mage caster type character. I've seen potential to build PoE1 style blaster wizard with freezing wand (in first playthrough I used Minoletta's Conduit). Now I'm playing melee character with two handed sword and medium armor.

Imo we need section to discuss game mechanics. There are still things that aren't clear. Like damage reduction system - how it works? What comes first? Percentage reduction or fixed damage treshold?

Edit: typos

@Aarik D, @Shyla - would it be possible to create a subforum for Avowed builds, game mechanics etc. like we have them for PoE, Deadfire and Outer Worlds?

Aloth: "You've been without a Character Builds subforum for weeks?"

Sagani: "I've had General Discussion subforum."

Aloth: "But you can't put character builds into that."

That said the more I play the more I believe that builds don't matter - whatever weapon is upgraded to the highest rarity matteres. Got bored with my recent set up and switched to the bow in spite of not having any points invested into it, and it works just fine. Sure, there are perks connected to it (more damage, slow time etc.) but I can't say I feel need for those (and I doubt I would feel their impact).

Though bows just feel OP if I am being honest. Unlike guns it doesn't seem I have to score headshots with power attacks, and as long as I time it right (and I had plenty of practice in Mount and Blade) and can dishout charged attacks with minimum impact on stamina. It just seems to out DPS any other weapon I used, and charged attacks tend to stagger enemies, which means it is difficult for anyone to get near me.

I did a Bow run first and am now doing a dual dagger run. And the latter is significantly more potent offensive-wise but also requires better player skills - it plays very differently.

Imo a character build forum isn't just about writing about powerful builds but also about build ideas, mechanics and tricks that are enjoyabl. And there are a lot of different but fun ways to approach the combat and the game in general.

I suspect there's no subforum for character builds because someone copied Avowed's forum structure from a section that has none (Pentiment for example).

Outer Worlds, which is somewhat similar to Avowed gameplay-wise, does have a character builds subforum.

Character builds forum has been made - https://forums.obsidian.net/forum/178-avowed-characters-builds-strategies-the-unity-engine-spoiler-warning/

Thanks for letting us know; I'm going to go through and see if there are any existing topics that should be there and move them, but if I miss any let me know.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Very cool, thank you!

Although... maybe the title should say "[...] unreal engine [...] instead of unity engine. :)
