Music: Sharing and Listening - The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between

When Eddie Van Halen appeared on the scene in the late 1970s, he blew everyone away with much of what he did, and Eruption in particular. Not a lot of guitar players even understood what he was doing, and most of them certainly couldn't play it. These days, kids play Eruption for breakfast and then start practicing for real. But the vast majority of them don't, for some reason, write music that I find engaging or interesting. Here's a really good example: these guys are unbelievably good musicians, but the song is really simple (as a composition) and not very good. (The total lack of dynamics is particularly sad.) I find this somewhat odd and paradoxical, and to some extent it even bothers me. I'd like these guys to write better music. But: definitely worth checking out, if only for what this band can do, technically.

[Guest artist Steve Vai is excluded from the comment above; he has done many interesting things, even if he's nowhere near my favorites as a guitarist.]

you kinda sound like lindsey buckingham complaining 'bout eddie van halen while he were simultaneous recognizing eddie's "virtuosos" talent. can probable find the quote somewheres with a simple search o' both artist names.

kinda reminds us o' another great artist moment, albeit a bit different. ms. raitt, a fantastic guitarist in her own right, were s'posed terrified she would f' it up at the grammy awards.

no guitar from bonnie in the linked, but were a memorable performance.

HA! Good Fun!

Quite possible! But I do think there's an important distinction to be made between technical proficiency and more general musical or songwriting skill. Look at Roger Waters: anyone can learn all his stuff very quickly, it's so easy to play. But who can write songs as good as his? Not a lot of people. Or think of Fogerty: his songs are ridiculously simple, but just try and write one as good as they are.

I can't play most Dream Theater songs even though I'm a pretty good drummer -- I'm approximately at the Rush level, let's say. But they are not good songs, in my view, so I don't feel any great impetus to learn them, either.

Speaking of Lindsey Buckingham... probably my favourite Lindsey Buckingham "moment"?
(yes, I know I posted this song some years ago, but probably long enough, that most people forgot I posted it)

Who knew that Punjabi was the best language for metal?

Note: I am no expert on Indian dialects, if that's Hindi rather than Punjabi then please correct me.

This needs to become a popular genre of music IMMEDIATELY if it isn't already:

It was pretty popular the last time someone posted the video. Well, the second one, at least, after which we talked about how much I hate System of a Down's vocalist, with @bugarup saying he unironically likes him and @Bartimaeus saying he at least doesn't hate him.

As for when that actually was, I'd say "recently" which is anywhere from yesterday back to 2005. :p

But yeah, that's pretty awesome.

Yeah, I posted it here probably like five or six months ago, :p.  As for whats his face from SOAD, I do think I admitted I was somewhat biased given that my mom (and thus I) listened to them a lot when I was a small child, which can certainly be an influence.

(e): Apparently, the thread hasn't moved much since I posted it, since this is just a few pages ago:

How I have existed fills me with horror. For I have failed in everything - spelling, arithmetic, riding, tennis, golf; dancing, singing, acting; wife, mistress, whore, friend. Even cooking. And I do not excuse myself with the usual escape of 'not trying'. I tried with all my heart.

In my dreams, I am not crippled. In my dreams, I dance.

We'll have to disagree on that one 😝

Queen's "Tribute" to their first manager (Norman Sheffield, owner of Trident Records back then). Less swear words, but all the hatred felt for him condensed into lyrics...

Time for something else than Eurodance trash. Have some 80ies music!

Edit: Maybe I should add a disclaimer, this is safe to click on. Really. No hidden silly hardstyle remix and no Scooter or anything. :p

How about some 70's German techno-pop (so long ago, I wonder if they weren't a bit ahead of their time)?

Although as a matter of preference, this is more my kind of 80's German pop music

How about a German Eurodance cover of a beloved rock classic?

(This is borderline heresy!)

Apparently this made the rounds as a fake St. Anger song.

If only it were real.

I fail to see how that can be. This sounds nothing like the production of St. Anger, which was an incredibly lame sounding attempt at making a 'garage' album. As if being from Metallica wasn't bad enough. :p

This was before St Anger was out, Kazaa/WinMX/etc were full of fake St Anger songs. I found out about Holochaust, er, Darcane, er Mind-A-Stray that way

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken
