Will England really blunder into the finals again?

Have the easier side of the tournament.

Ronaldo crying after missing his penalty was great. Shame Slovenia sucks at finishing...well and penalties.

Why they keep letting Ronaldo take free kicks is beyond me

Canadians whining so much about diving after Argentina disposed of them. Always fun watching North Americans watch a football match for the first time

Miami is currently 29 C (85 F) with 77% humidity. I.e. it feels like 35 C (95 F). Yeesh, what a horrible place for a high intensity football match.

Perfect for the Dolphins to send their opponents into traction though if it comes back during the season. The only thing imo stopping them is the fact they probably will freeze during any road game in the playoffs

My alma mater has been in the news a lot lately for volleyball. They have a transgender player and a bunch of schools have been forfeiting against them. Trump even commented on it: https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2024-10-17/san-diego-state-refutes-donald-trump-claim-transgender-san-jose-state-volleyball-player-injury

This is a pretty crazy story. First off, she has been on the team for 3 seasons, so this is quite the delayed reaction. SJSU is following NCAA rules and it sounds like she is being tested regularly. The interesting thing is one of her teammates has joined the lawsuit against the NCAA over their transgender policy, and she's been making the conservative podcast circuit. That is quite the teammate.

The concerns people seem to have revolve around safety and fairness. First off, sports are not fair. There are always people that will be faster, stronger, and smarter. No one is evenly matched. That would probably make for a very boring matchup.

Volleyball is also not a safe sport. People get hurt. But I want to see the data. Does this transgender player hit harder than all of the biological females in college? If you can show me that she outmatches everyone else, then maybe there is an argument to be made. As is, it is a weak argument that seems to be just targeting a very small minority.

Nevada players wanted to forfeit, but the university put out an amazing statement:

Quote

On Oct. 13, a majority of the Wolf Pack women’s volleyball team issued a statement to the University informing it that the team had decided it was forfeiting the scheduled match with San José State University. While players are not authorized to forfeit the match – this decision is one that only the University and our Department of Athletics can officially make – the University continues to support the rights of the volleyball players who choose not to participate.

I wish to give added emphasis to what was stated on Oct. 13 by the University, that any member of the women’s Wolf Pack volleyball team may opt out of participating in the match on the day of the contest without consequence. No volleyball team member will be subjected to any team disciplinary action for deciding not to participate in the match.

The University made the decision not to declare a forfeiture and move forward with hosting the match as scheduled based on several factors. As a public university, the University is legally prohibited by Section 24 of the Nevada Constitution and other laws and regulations to declare a forfeit for reasons related to gender identity or expression.

Specifically:

Article I, Section 24 of the Nevada Constitution provides that “Equality of Rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by this state or any of its political subdivisions on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin” (emphasis added). As a State university, a forfeiture for reasons involving gender identity or expression could constitute per se discrimination and violate the Nevada Constitution.

I love it. That is a solid statement.

I got bloodwork done recently, if my doctor didn't know me she would've accused me of taking bodybuilder levels of testosterone. I'd probably have alot of problems with sports where they test. I was crazy superior to just about anyone in my hockey team despite not lifting weights or doing any exercise besides hockey training, enough to injure people pretty often without intending to.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken
