so I recently got itch to play might and magic 6 but when I turned it on I was too oldschool for me to replay - turns out there is mod that let you play MnM 6 in MnM 8 engine with such innovative feature as mouse look.... I have to try it tomorrow

I'll recommend M&MX to you, though I'm not sure if it's what you are looking for. The devs' inspiration was World of Xeen, so it's turn-based and grid-based, though it does have some modern QoL improvements. Anyway, I enjoyed it, so if you liked the early turn-based M&M games (1-5) then this may be worth a play.

actually I vastly prefer 6-8 and I really didn't liked how MnMX looks

Yeah, I couldn't get into the MM6-8 project. It was a cool idea, but it was hard to go back to that. I did have fun with MMX. 

I've been looking for a newer grid based fantasy game. I never played Grimrock 2, so maybe I should give that a spin. I miss Lands of Lore.

Once in a while I try to go back and play Wizardry 6 again. I can't do it, those early levels are just so brutal. I have long been curious to try one of the Japanese Wizardry games.

Fun fact: Wizardry was one of the biggest if not THE biggest inspirations for early jRPGs.

I recommend Operencia and if you like steampunk both Vaporum games. Just the Ranger class in Operencia from what IIRC is very challenging.

Wizardry 7 and 8 are two of my favorite games (Wizardry 7 being one of the few games I've bought twice because the original version stopped working when we upgraded to a pentium...yes, I'm old) but I've only spent a bit of time playing 6.  I've wanted to play through all 3 (I've actually never beaten 7, but it's freaking huge) but those early levels of 6 are indeed so brutal that I just can't do it.

This.  Operencia definitely has that "Old Skkkool" style to it,  if that tickles your monocle.  I know I had some fun with it until I got bored of it (which is perfectly normal for me!)

What always gets me is the area past the gorn castle/city whatever it was (it's been years, I can't recall the name.)  There's a T-intersection in the road, and a massive open/forested area there that basically has no distinguishing features, and without a decent in-game map, it's just brutal trying to explore it.  There's some really good loot out there, though (including the belt of flowers or something like that, which is one of the best items for a ninja) so I always try to explore it.  There are also some incredibly brutal enemies in the area, including (going from very cloudy memory) some sort of giant cat-like things that are really tough to kill and that spam some sort of prismatic spell that inflicts all kinds of debuffs and can instant kill.

Count me in the camp of those where some games, no matter how much you loved them years ago ... for some you can still replay/don't care about either looks, mechanics or QoL thingies, others you just can't go back.  I mean I suppose if I tried hard enough I could, but it's not like I'm not familiar with them already so the motivation to force yourself into the past isn't there as much. 

I notice they have Biomutant on their front page now, with "soon" - does this mean it might truly be releasing "soon?" I'd kind of given up on that game...

I know it's at least available for pre-order, because I got a message from GOG wanting me to order it.  I've actually got it wishlisted, but there's no way I'm buying it anytime soon.

GMG shows the release date as 25th May

I watched their 9 minute video re: Biomutant.  Something about it felt off.  I don't know, it doesn't look very interesting ... maybe they just made a terrible video.  At any rate, never had intentions to pre-order.  I'll wait for review/more info.  The way they sorta disappeared for so long can't help but make you wonder.
