Journalism and sexism in the games industry
Namutree replied to LadyCrimson's topic in Way Off-Topic
That's about what I thought already. Good read anyway. -
What's wrong with black Annie? There are lots of potential lore issues with female Thor so I get that, but I thought the new Annie was a new version of her altogether. I think the new Annie is adorable. Nothing wrong with the old version, but I don't see anything wrong with the new version either.

GG as important as the cold war? Lol. No, I certainly don't see GG as important as the cold war. I would hope no one does.

They say we're a hate mob. Anti-GG seem to have an issue with projection.

You did. Behold this objectively untrue statement: THIS ISN'T TRUE! You imagined this. The different races have mechanical differences too. When I pointed that out you said this: This technically isn't true. Argonians get a resistance to disease, but by only listing this one racial feature it's clear that you were ignoring that Argonians get Histskin. Histskin is a powerful ability that only Argonians get. Your claims were false. Your idea that race doesn't have any impact on the game besides a bit of dialog was imagined. I'm not imagining anything. Issue like quality of combat may be subjective, but the FACT that race in Skyrim affects gameplay AND how people react to you is not imagined; unlike your previous claim.

Field Triage is an absolute must have?

I think there should be a health penalty for being unconscious. I'm thinking 1% of your max health per two seconds. -
It seems like every time they make major changes the game has issues running well; then the next patch is minor, but everything runs smoother.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, but what is "gish" play?

This quote is hogwash. Skyrim has a fantastic character creation system. The Elder Scrolls have cool lore, and Skyrim took it in an interesting direction. The skill system is the best in the series yet; it may not have the most, but it's more dynamic and allows for much better character customization than most RPG's. The combat has been much improved from previous entries; especially Oblivion. It's fast paced and reasonably fun. The shouts are neat to screw around with. Syrim is NOT like the bigfoot pizza.

I like the way talents are handled now. Much improved over the old system.

The people who call the Stormcloaks racists often exaggerate the issue. It's not that they hate non-Nords; they just don't care about the needs of non-Nordic residents. [...] I realize that and agree, but it's still a perfectly reasonable thing to be expected. The Stormcloaks very much are Skyrim is for the Nords and there is very "real" racial tensions supposedly going on in Skyrim, and there was a major Tamriel-wide race war with Mer in general and Altmer in particular being the aggressors. The lack of reactivity in that is ridiculous in relation to the situation that Bethesda tried to paint out. Wasn't a race war. It was a war between the Altmeri Dominion and the Empire. Neither side was composed of a single race. The Empire contains plenty of Altmer and other Mer, and the Dominion contains more than Mer nations such as Elsweyr. Heck, the Orsimer were mostly on the Empire's side. People ignorant of Elder Scrolls lore figured that since the Stormcloaks are a little racist; that they must be hyper racists like the confederates, nazis, and kkk so we would have another rehash of the anyone racist is a lunatic lecture. Instead when it turned out that the Stormcloaks are only a little racist they were like, "WHY AREN'T THEY RACIST TO THE POINT OF BEING INSANE!?" Then decided that it was a flaw. I mean, all they do is ask the player why a non-Nord wants to join them. Since they weren't bat**** crazy how will we ever learn racism is bad? HOW?

This one's a giant SO WHAT. None of the IE games react to the character you created either - which means that in terms of RPG significance, it must not matter that much to the game's fun factor. More to the point: I rank NPCs walking up to you and saying "Hey! you're an elf!" or "Hey, you're a half orc cleric who's wearing leather armor! Get off my lawn!" just slightly more important than being able to customize the shape of your nose in the character creator. When it was relevant in the IE games, you were occasionally called out on race. The difference is that in the IE games, it was very rarely relevant in a way that you'd expect to be called out on it. Skyrim is a completely different deal. At the very least, I expected for most to make a distinction between Men and Mer. But not even the Stormcloaks, pointed out as "racist" by cultural marxists everywhere, seem to care. At all. With the established background, I was surprised to see that I as an Altmer could just walk straight up to Ulfric and stab him in the face without even being questioned what High Elf was doing there. The people who call the Stormcloaks racists often exaggerate the issue. It's not that they hate non-Nords; they just don't care about the needs of non-Nordic residents. Skyrim has bugs, but is easily the smoothest running Elder Scrolls game in the main series. Anyone remember Daggerfall? I do. The game was at least 1200% buggier than Skyrim on release. It couldn't even be completed without a patch. In Morrowind it was very rare that you could play for even twenty minuets without merging with a rock or all the buildings disappearing with only doors floating. As for how well the games run: In Morrowind the game has to load every time you enter a new cell; which is often since an individual cell is small. Yeah, they do remove features, but they also add in new ones; not to mention that a lot of the old features were either useless or didn't even work. In Skyrim you can actually put points into your skills with branching growth options. Back in the day there were more skills sure, but there was little depth to them. It's funny that people call the new system where you make more choices and those choices have consequences, "dumbing down"; while the old system was just grind your skills to be good. Unless you're talking Morrowind. In that game it was just pay some gold for 100 in all skills and infinite levels. So smart was the old system. The best way to fight in Morrowind was to make was to buff your luck to uber high levels and be literally invincible since enemies can't hit you. "Oh look, I can't even be attacked. How interesting!" In Oblivion enemies can't even hurt you as fast as you can heal yourself. The fights in Oblivion also took forever for no good reason as the damage was stupid low, and you also don't have very many ways in which to attack so combat was extremely repetitive. The Stormcloaks don't attack Thalmor on site. The companions don't have a racial policy, and they make you spar with a member to prove your worth in combat. So...BS. Why wouldn't they? As long as you can use magic than why wouldn't the guild accept you? Why would the guild turn away a Nord in a country of Nords? There is a reaction to your race in Skyrim. Plenty of it. Also, there's plenty reason for that NPC to ask if your High Elf was one of those, "Skyrim is for Nords" types. Being a high elf doesn't mean that you're against racism. They don't know if your just visiting or what you believe. You can even meet imperials in the game who believe in the Stormcloaks cause. I could go on, but I'm feeling lazy.

1: I guess this one is kinda true, but the situation hasn't changed much since Morrowind. 2: There are greater consequences for joining factions in Skyrim than Morrowind. Important characters will live or die based on which factions you join in Skyrim. Joining a faction means almost nothing in Morrowind besides your ability to join other factions. Compare your ability to invade Whiterun by joining the Stormcloaks in Skyrim to being less popular with rival factions in Morrowind. 3: You make a bigger impact on the world in Skyrim than in Morrowind. Which faction rules the country will change depending on your choices in Skyrim. Nothing important ever changes in Morrowind. The world is pretty much static. 4: Considering the system was so bad in Morrowind that some quests basically cannot be finished without help from the internet since the directions are sometimes extremely poorly written or flat-out wrong: I don't think the system was dumbed down since the old system was dumber. 5: This isn't the series dumbing down; it's time and budget constraints due to voice acting. 6: This is just a shift in focus. Puzzles detract from role-playing, combat, and exploration. This isn't dumbing down. 7: This isn't dumbing down either as it actually makes the game harder. Once you knew where the Uber items in Morrowind are the game becomes stupid easy. I didn't bother watching the video, but the OP is mostly non-sense.

The tendency to unthinkingly follow the party line so you can earn internet cred is common to both the "SJW" and "anti-SJW" camps. I agree with this. The Target situation with GTA 5 made it clear to me that there certainly is a bit of party line following within gamergate. All Target did was act like a business. It's completely normal for a business not to offer a product if enough people complain about said product.

The combat in Oblivion was complete crap. Thanks to the super low damage system most player could easily heal faster than even a group of enemies could hurt them. Trivial fights would drag on forever, and the bow was nearly useless. Not to mention by mid level the player had to choose from two impossible choices: 1: Keep the difficulty the same and die of boredom since you are an immortal God who can heal much much faster than anyone can hurt you. 2: Increase the difficulty and die of boredom since even the most trivial of fights will drag on forever since the damage is so freakin' low. It's also more limited than Skyrim's combat too so enjoy doing the same thing over-and-over. The combat in Skyrim while no prize is MUCH better than Oblivion's. Just as Skyrim is much better than Oblivion. Generally, I agree with you, especially since I never managed to finish Oblivion simply because it ended up dragging on forever until you just don't have it in you anymore, but as for bows sucking, I must ask you.. what? Bows were insane, when combined with high Stealth, and in Oblivion, there is no excuse for not having high.. well.. everything. Most enemies wouldn't even get close to you, and you could simply stay out of range and kill them in just a few shots. Most would be lucky if they even discovered you. The same is true for Skyrim. In oblivion a large number of enemies are basically immune to arrows, and bows do less damage than melee so using them against the most annoying enemies like trolls isn't really an option since they'll heal faster than you can hurt them. Then there's the fact that the best quest weapons are melee. If you can get past all that; the fact that bows rely on agility is their death-knell. Melee weapons are based on strength with is a very useful attribute; far more so than agility. In nearly every situation melee weapons were just better than bows. In Skyrim bows were greatly enhanced.
