I can understand the appeal, yeah. The best explanation I can give for it is that the milieu is familiar, like FR is for an IE-fan, you descend comfortable into a slot that you'd think would be difficult to comprehend in this medium. The concept is age old, but there hasn't been a realisation of it as an easily approachable game to westerners.
