  1. I'm thinking of adding at least $20 to my pledge. My current tier includes the x-pac, but I could add it on to one or two of the games and just tell the person getting it that it's both Christmas and birthday. Huzzah! I'm going to wait until the last minute at this point, however, until I see what the newer updates have to offer. I think the xpac download is a reasonable compromise for folks who would otherwise miss it.
  2. I just gawked at the final a few minutes ago. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Looks super amazing, srsly. So... different resolutions for desktop wallpaper I hope? :Cant's sly grin icon: The Cthulu zombie pic is my current desktop, but I'm jonesin' for something from in-game. EDIT: Oops. I'm an idiot. It's a screen shot so it will be in whatever res you have it at the time. :Cant's sheepish smile icon:
  3. If setting was so irrelevant to the enjoyment of a creative work of fantasy or sci-fi, DnD would never have had another setting beside Greyhawk, and no one would know who Lovecraft was if his work had to live on his execution and not on the draw of his mythos. But DnD had many settings, including Planescape, Spelljammer, and Ravenloft, which provided for characters and stories that never could have worked in Greyhawk/Fearûn. Do you honestly think it wouldn't matter if P:E threw away the cliches western fantasy altogether and set its story in a world inspired by the Dreamtime of aboriginal myth? Or based itself on Exalted instead of DnD and had us play a game of politics among the soul-hierarchies and world-bodies of the titans who created all that is? 'Exploring' new and wondrous worlds is why I think I'm into fantasy and sci-fi in the first place, and just rehashing the same old stuff pretty much kills that. So, you took *all that* out of one sentence? Even if I hadn't said 'as much as,' which remains true no matter what, it would still be a stretch. The fact is, the devs choose the setting they think will best serve their creative needs. A good designer can find something good in any setting, but it does not follow that the setting is entirely meaningless and that's not, in fact, at all what I said. To restate and hopefully clarify: The setting doesn't matter nearly so much as what the devs do with it, and never has. I'm hoping that's clear enough that folks don't put words in my mouth the like the setting is irrelevant to the enjoyment of a creative work of fantasy or sci-fi. However, the fact is, the design team creates (or licenses) the setting and then uses it to create the story. For my part, I wouldn't care if the devs went away from western fantasy traditions and itself in the Dreamtime setting (although I'm not familiar with it) as long as they crafted something good. I'm sure some fans would complain and some might not buy the game. That's fair enough from a marketing perspective, but it's irrelevant from a quality perspective. The design team decided on a western fantasy setting as the best place to set the story. To recap, I never said that the setting is irrelevant, just not as important, by a long shot, as what the devs do with it. I still believe that. I never said setting doesn't matter, although I think a good design team can make something good in any setting. However, I was defending the use of the western fantasy setting because I think it's familiar to most of the fans of the IE games and saying that, although not as exotic as the PS:T setting, still quite open to the same exotic sort of feel.
  4. The fact is, Obsidian has been hounded into including classes that were original absent in the first place. Paladins and bards? If monks hadn't been included, the hue and cry from monkophiles would have been deafening. Folks want these classes in there and, as Loranc says, what difference does it make what they call them. The idea of hacking on someone with a sword could be called all sorts of things. Why contrive some neat little way to say 'fighter' or 'warrior?' Now, the Chanter class is different. They had to differentiate from the ol' 'bard' class because these Chanter types don't go around singing or playing instruments. They're more epic story tellers and the way their magic works is different also. ...But I'm actually more pleased. The setting isn't so remote and strange to scare off folks, like lima says, and yet, because it's a personal story, it could very well be every bit as twisted and knotty as PS:T. All sort of movies, books, and tv shows are set in our plain ol' mundane real world, and some of those are down-right exotic and edgy. Some of them are even over the edgy. The setting doesn't matter nearly so much as what the devs do with it, and never has.
  5. For my sins, I like Leliana's song also. It did feel kind of silly at first, but I just shrugged and went with it and it was actually a pretty little song and made for a gaming moment. I agree that it could have been done with maybe a single instrument. ...But it wasn't and I enjoyed it. Now, if I were going to put it together, I would probably go for a more simple approach like casa suggests. I think it could even be better, but that's art. You can't speculate too much about how to improve an expression of artistic talent because it's a thing in and of itself. shoulda woulda coulda doesn't matter after the last note dies or the ink dries.
  6. I'm seriously going to have to revisit this thread in the morning, which will come in about six hours, but I agree entirely. I think comedy should be used to relief tension so that the design team can set the player up for the more dramatic elements. Morte was perfect in that regard in PS:T in that he could be humorous, particularly in the beginning when he was scoping out the undead chics, but then he was also a tool for character development and dramatic expression. I'm sure I'm not making sense right now, but the words are right on the tip of my tongue. lol Seriously, though, I think I'm right with you on the whole idea of trying to convey the idea of someone haunted by this terrible event he's witnessed while still giving enough room for the player to breath a little between the overpowering dramatic elements. If the game is bereft of humor, it would not be good, though. There has to be something there to give the player some space so that the dramatic hammer can strike with even more force.
  7. I think humor in PnP should be part of the give and take of a group of friends getting together. There are a lot of inside jokes, slapstick, and guy humor. In a CRPG, I think the humor should be more subtle. Comic relief should be a way to relieve dramatic tension. Morte was peftect in that regard. I want to see t he whole breadth in this game. I want suspense, drama, comedy, horror, and even inspiration. EDIT: a little free and loose with my spelling and grammar right now.
  8. http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/60901-update-14-the-music-of-project-eternity/ If you haven't seen it, this is a great update for phonophiles (or whatever folks who love the music are called).
  9. Yeah, it's tough. I think it was linked in the sound update Bell did earlier.
  10. So am I reading the description correctly that the PE paladin's skills may be centered AoE? Possibly both offensive/defensive/heal? Because that sounds all sorts of cool to me... I played a Marshal class in my PnP group. I hated the group, even though one of the people is a close friend, but, if i'm not too far gone to remember it right, I loved the marshal. The Marshal gave huge benefits to his party members. I could carry a tower shield and grant +3 AC to everyone. I could improve hit bonuses, saves, or any number of things depending on what I chose for my minor and major auras. Taking some innocuous sounding feats made it so that I really made it far far more likely for my companions to hit or damage the enemy. Great times. Of course, my group was all about home brewed rules and other things that made every character uber, and I'm not in junior high any more. I want to earn my victories. Hell, there was some Kobold dragonkin character (and the DM didn't use ECLs) who had something like 8 attacks at seventh level or something. I don't need anyof that puerile bull****. Thow in pointy hats, high pitched elf voices (and I played an elf), and silence during battles and you have a snapshot of my group. I want beer (or wine or cognac), pretzels, and a healthy dose of jokes and then it will be a great gaming group.
  11. But, for this kickstarter, they only have one pot. They have a pot with kickstarter funds for the main title. They don't need to differentiate those funds outside of that project.
  12. I'm not worried about Obsidz slighting the folks who want to go evil. I actually think they're better at coming up with evil options. I'm more worried that they won't come up with intelligent and thoughtful 'good' responses. However, they did great for both sides and the middle in MotB. Truly evil or 'good' options (and I don't think those ideas go out the window just because there is no alignment system) will be a great payoff for players who want to have a particular character type. Keep in mind that the concept of good or evil will be part of the spiritual and intellectual make-up of the population. A lot of 'evil' characters will undoubtedly see themselves as good. Some relatively nice characters will, if you dig deep enough, will exhibit some evil behavior. Some of those might even realize they have an evil tendency. Some of them won't. Some relatively nice characters will actually be beacons of goodness in their societies but will be just too busy trying to do their best to realize how decent and good they are. Some really 'good' characters will be good but wish every day they could just let lose and kill someone or even just take off and fish all day. In other words, it should be just like real life where we never really know the balance of the good or bad in our actions but most of us try to be decent citizens and human beings. With that in mind, some folks are goodie two shoes and some folks like being bad boys. The devs should find ways to reward the wide middle and throw some good stuff in there for the folks on either edge. I'm a little diminished right now, but that's my take. EDIT: I think a lot of us rabble rousers were clamoring for physical add-ons, DT. I hope they find a way to include an xpac add-on for you folks at $140.
  13. You know, Ieo, I don't exactly know what you mean. If you're saying that they shouldn't have offered the tiers that have resulted in the vast majority of their support, I think you're nuts. Stark raving variety of nuts. The problem is how they did the tiers, but no matter how many people complain, they've got a lot of extra pledgers and pledges with their last two updates. Just saying, even with some folks complaining, it's working. Now, I will say I hope they offer the xpac as an add-on, which I hope will tone down some of the complaints However, as for your overall assessment of Kickstarter as a store because Obsidz won't destroy their reputation by dropping the ball, I completely agree. EDIT: Making my points without being an obnoxious ass.
  14. Nope, no alcohol induced angry posts. I disagree with you boger, but I don't have personal animosity for you. No need to argue my point further than that.
  15. I don't think its like that. Let's say they use your money to make plastic cups and put popcorn in it and then try to sell you soda in the plastic cup you already paid for. Wouldn't you think, hold on I've already paid for the plastic cup, shouldn't I get the discount? No. Not at all. I disagree with your assessment entirely. Obsidian should not feel compelled to give away the store because people like you are informed entirely by your own greed.
  16. I want a cat who greets me when I come home, but can transform into [deleted]. I thought it wasn't all that off-color, but the wife read me the riot act when she saw it. I mean, the playboy bunny isn't even a real person.
  17. All of the money they take in from Kickstarter will go towards the main game. It will not go towards the expansion. You have not paid one red cent towards the expansion no matter what you pledge or what tier you choose. You have only paid towards the main game. If you pledge high enough, then they will include a free copy of the xpac, for which the people have not paid to make, only to purchase. in other words, let's say you pay $10 for two popcorns and you get a free soda. If popcorn is priced at $5 and you pay $10 for two and get an extra soda, you haven't paid a damned thing for the soda. Someone might have gone in with a friend and bought two popcorns and still gotten a free soda. They're just lucky. You go in and only buy one popcorn, you're out of luck but you're sure as hell not paying for something you don't get. If I were going to go cowboy on an issue, I swear to God it would be this one.
  18. I have to say that I'm going to do something I never do, which is create a non-mage character on my first run. It's settled, I can create a Homeric bard, and that's just too much awesome to leave for a second run.
  19. The use of redundant imagery and epithets in Homeric epic poetry was what I thought Obsidz had in mind when they described Chanters use of well established snippets of ancient poetry. Seriously, the Chanter is a bard ol skool style.
  20. You need to post Update #18 on the kickstarter front page and update the add-ons area. Of course, maybe it's already done and my browser is still using the cached page or something.
  21. I want the main character to be able, if he's lucky, clever, and tough enough, to survive without losing any limbs. EDIT: My take is no chance in hell with a healthy dose of I sure as hell hope not.
  22. This is definitely the best thing about them. It calls to mind epic poetry of the classical age, which appeals to me greatly. I've never really been a huge bard fan, but I honestly think I'll have to try a Chanter along the lines of a mythical 'Homer' or 'Virgil' character.
  23. I'm almost completely tapped out. I can't conceive of anything more they could do to get me to pledge more at this point, but I'm always looking and seeing what they do next. I have to say that I think this update is awesome. Probably my favorite update of any I've seen so far.
  24. I think George Ziets is not only a great craftsman and an expert designer, he's always struck me as a really decent guy also. I'm glad they're going to get him onboard. ...And you *are* going to get him onboard, right? :Cant's glaring while smacking his fist icon: I'm more excited by this update than the last one!
  25. I don't like paladins at all, the bastards! :Cant's cantankorous scowl icon: However, I *am* happy Pally lovers are getting what they want and... aw hell... if there's a self-righteous paladin companion in the game, I guess I'll let him join my merry band. Someone has to remain sober enough to drive. EDIT: Chanters are bards... so maybe the bard brigade will be placated.
