What is clear to me, according to the Kicktraq site that Zoo and Bootsy pointed out to me earlier, is that this update has done wonders for increasing both members and pledges since mid-September. I'm glad about that. I'm exstatic. I have, for me, a lot tied up in this project. Not only because I've put in what is for me a considerable amount of money for a single entertainment expenditure, but because of my investment in terms of time, effort, and enthusiasm. I've written or called at least thirty different news outlets, leaned on personal friends, exhorted my wife's friends, and regularly visited the fora and the web pages to keep up with the news. It's like volunteering for a political campaign. I want to see my candidate win and win big. I want to see Obsidian make enough money to make good on their promises. So, we can argue over the stepping of the tiers and whatnot, but I want them to make a lot of money and to put a damn good bit of it into making a superior product.

Hot diggity, guys, you're getting me excited. I recently replayed XCOM 1and2 not too long ago, less than a year I think. I think I'll have to pick this up. Take a screenshot of one of your favorite places and post it for a little looksee.

Obsidian is a company and they're offering a product I personally find reasonable. For that reason I don't think they're any more greedy than a bakery charging more for a bear claw five pack than for a single glazed doughnut. Folks wanting to have the bear claw five pack for the same price as the single glazed are, by my figuring, greedy.

Even if I assumed that every point you made was salient and correct, AO, I would still think Squeaky has the right of it. The basic fact, unchanged by fine points along the way, is that Obsidz didn't harm anyone by offering better rewards for higher tiers. There is no compelling argument as to why folks pitching in at lower level tiers should expect the same rewards, or even access to the same rewards, as the folks pitching in at higher tiers. There is a simple remedy for folks who want the more significant rewards: increase your pledge to the higher tier. I'm starting to think Monte's right and it's a simple matter of base greed.

You blaspheme! The Alien Blaster rules all. Actually, I don't think any one weapon is all that awesome, although I've probably used the sniper rifle more than any other weapon in the game. I didn't really set out to get the blaster. I mean, I knew it was there, which is why I made the quick detour, but I was doing that return to sender quest and that takes you all over the map. I was in the area and stopped by for it. That finite ammo will certainly last long enough to get me to the gauss rifle, but I won't use the blaster for a while anyway. I'll just stick with the hunting rifle or say.

Most other Kickstarters that I followed, when there was offers of "exclusive this for backers" (not even "exclusive content for higher tiers, even) there was a general uproar about everyone actually wanting all content available to everyone who gets the game. Now this isn't exactly "exclusive to some backers" as anyone can buy the product later ... but I seriously doubt people are going to pull their backing because the project has been so well funded that everyone who'd donated enough to get the game also gets the expansion. And those twelve people who are that selfish? Obsidian will be just as huge a success without them. I usually agree with you most of the time, merin, but the idea struck me as bad also. It's not because I think folks would necessarily reduce their pledges, but because it seems like a slap in the face to all those folks who agonized over coughing up more money to the project and finally bit the bullet and did so. Those folks, some of whom could ill-afford it, put their money up front because they felt the need while other, some of whom could easily afford the extra expenditure, held back. I don't have a horse in this race and I'll clearly not withdraw or reduce my pledge, but I think it's bogus to reward folks for not pledging at the expense of those folks who, from this update forward, ponied up the cash.

It's a room full of people who backed a project based on their love for the IE. We kinda are old men... ok middle aged... but as a starting audience we are getting closer to old than young Bite me... but yeah. As for the physical vs. the digital question, it's just the irony. I have a bunch of physical stuff coming, but the only thing I really care all that much about is the map. I don't really *need* the box, per se, and I don't care if it's autographed. I don't mean that as a slight to the devs. I'll put my fervent support of Obsidz up against anyone's, but it's not like I'm going to frame the signed box. The game *is* Obsidian's autograph, and it's signed by everyone, not just the guys at the top. So we have some folks who want to upgrade but don't want to give up the physical stuff and then you have someone like me who chose his tier based on the top limit of what he could reasonably justify spending on himself just to fund the project. ...And I'd be willing to save them the shipping drive down there to pick up the physical items. I'd buy a couple of extra t-shirts while I was at it. lol I do hope they either add an extra tier or, even better, some add-ons to give folks a shot at the new digital swag without losing their physical items.

If they added the add-ons for those prices, I might actually go for it nikita. The way I see it is that I'm $123 away from the next 'tier.' If they can put together something that gets me close to that, I'll probably bite the bullet. If I add another $35 for another friend for whom I buy Christmas gifts (not the greedy-assed friend), then I can scratch one more name off my shopping list. Then it's a matter of deciding how I want to do things. If the xpac add-on is $35, then I'll pledge for that for one particular friend for whom I've already purchased the $35 game and then I'll just let him know that it's his Christmas and birthday gifts for the upcoming year. That's seventy buck right off the bat, and then I could just figure out the tetris. ...And everything other than my particular tier is digital only. Right now, it stands at my pledge tier, three $35 game tiers, two $7 hint book tiers for two of the people getting games, and an extra eight bucks as a nod to the Order. If I decide to get a $35 tier for one more friend, add another $35 for the xpac for one of the other friends, and then I'm approx fifty buck away from the next 'tier' so to speak. I could get there any number of ways, but it's all pure speculation until we find out more about what Obsidz plans to do. I really want to add more, but I *must* have a reason to do it. I have time to decide, and so I'm waiting.

Yeah, but the important thing is, why is my damned game crashing nowadays on these aliens? Grrrr. I'm going to sneak around them and investigate the site. EDIT: A HA! I managed to get it done without a crash. Whew.
-
Hey, my game keeps crashing when I kill one of the aliens. It's not the alien captain but one of his two minions. I get a crash every time. It's frustrating.

Well, be in good enough shape to come here and tell us what you think, guys. I'm waiting for the good word.

Live recorded music, Poll 2.0
Cantousent replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The medieval/"ancient" in the poll is in reference to the instruments themselves, not necessarily the music (there's modern stuff being composed for lute, for example). The hurdy-gurdy dates back to something like the 9th Century CE. I'm not entirely sure what counts as "ancient," but "medieval" probably seems more appropriate... Ah, see, I"m such a doofus I got mixed up. In my mind, 9th Century AD isn't 'ancient.' :Cant's sheepish grin icon: I was thinking ancient Greece and Rome. -
Thanks guys! Yeah, it's been a good day of pledges. Best since Sept 27 or so by my reconning.

Live recorded music, Poll 2.0
Cantousent replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
We do have several images of ancient instruments. My educational background isn't in music, but it is in classical studies. I think, between texts and images, you'd find enough there to compose some music based on the instruments, wether or not that music would necessarily mimic how the ancients composed is probably another matter. I wouldn't know. Poetry used meter rather than rhyme, so maybe the things that we consider all important to music today wouldn't be the same as then. EDIT: I don't know if that effort would be worth performed instruments, however. -
It seems to me that the update was quite successful in terms of backers and pledges. I haven't been following the Kickstarter page as often lately, but today looks pretty good to me. I could be wrong, so if there's a way to know for sure it would be great if someone would link it or whatever.

You're probably not the only one, but I disagree. The updates are supposed to be exciting and edgy. If they play it safe the whole time, they might as well not make these updates for the Kickstarter campaign. In fact, a number of folks suggested previous updates were too timid. I say go all out in the last ten days in order to secure more funding.

To be honest, Bootsy, I expected the physical stuff to ship when the game ships anyway. ...But the internet dynamic could be one reason they don't want to undertake the option. It would be a shame, but it would be understandable. EDIT: However, it would be unacceptable for them to say it wouldn't ship at all. If they make decent money on each item, they need to budget the manufacture. ...But don't ship early. I think the problem is really with shipping more than manufacture costs.

That's exactly why I only pledge to digital tiers now. When I saw how much the Double Fine Adventure and The Banner Saga had to spend on physical rewards being manufactured, sent out etc. I resolved to not pledge for physical stuff again. Who needs a hard-back book when a .pdf will do? I'd rather it gets spent on the game instead. I know others will disagree but there it is... Yes, this is true, but physical items could conceivably create more revenue for the devs. The point is balancing costs against price and shipping. If you can offer quality items that folks will buy, then it's worth it. After all, mail-order has made a *lot* of money over the years, so it's not necessarily something that will end up costing money. It's just a matter of working out the details. However, what I would like is, if Obsidz is dead set against offering physical add-on swag, that they just come clean about it. A polite notification clearly stating that they cannot offer physical add-on items due to the prohibitive costs would settle the issue for me. Otherwise, I'll keep pestering on the subject, not because I want to demand it, but because I don't know if it's feasible or not. If it is, they should consider it. If it's not, they should put the matter to rest and we'll move on.

The problem for me is the fact that Kickstarter isn't supposed to be a 'store.' I understand. I get it. Really. That's probably why all the add-ons are digital and the biggest spread is diggital in terms of tier swag. After all, Obsidz greatest asset is talent. Making or commissioning physical items and shipping them requires not only talent, but outlay for a physical product. Digital content is almost pure funding for the game. Physical items only get extra funding after they substract extra costs. Gotcha. Here's the thing, and I'm trying not to be pushy, but I don't value my own sad hide enough to up my pledge for ego-stroking swag. If I could get some physical swag, and that swag must *must* *MUST* increase funding for the project, then I could up my pledge instead of my tier. For that reason, if it's feasible, I hope they offer it. I don't know whether I'm the 'average' or 'common' consumer, but I am *a* consumer and that's the value that could get money from me. If I could buy something useful or beautiful or broadly appealing to folks outside this crowd, I would purchase them. I love my niece. She won't play the game, but she *will* wear a tasteful and pretty t-shirt. My wife may or may not play the game, but she can actually use a thumb-drive. In fact, she does all the time.

Separate kickstarter then? This would cannibalize their current kickstarter and, moreover, make the inclusion in this kickstarter confusing as all hell.

I agree that Obsidz could do better with spacing out the tiers, but I also think that there's more afoot than folks wanting more for less. Some folks think the xpac will steal funds from the initial game (it won't), some folks think that the xpac is a day one dlc for the game (it isn't), or that xpacs aren't worth the effort in the first place (they are). Most laughable to me is a common syndrome so far of folks clamoring for another game that hearkens to the grand ol' days of the Infinity Engine games and then complaining about a feature that was common in those games. The xpac is a good thing. I also agree with folks that add-ons could be good, including physical items, but I don't think Obsidz should lose money on them. If they offer t-shirts, something I've joined with others to get offered as an add-on, those t-shirts should be quality, which means they should not be cheap. They need to be a high enough quality to be a real value and then Obsidian needs to make enough money to make it a significant benefit to the project altogether. It can't just eek out enough to pay for itself. It needs to make enough money that they can take the risk in offering it.
