My gut instinct, WUE, is that they wouldn't have offered it if they hadn't budgeted enough money to figure that they'll have more ideas that they can develop than time before the first release. Even if it tanks, they're likely to be working on the x-pac even as the initial game ships. IF there are complaints about problems with the initial game, they'll wrap up a big patch into the xpac. Just a thought.

lol I'm doing something I swore to myself I wouldn't do, but I'm actually leaning on friends to pledge. "Okay, [name deleted], you need to go look at the project eternity kickstarter page. The lowest price is 25 bucks and that includes the retail version of the game. You can't tell me you would rather pay 50-60 at reatil than 25. Just sayin'." His excuse is that he just bought a beemer and all new kitchen appliances. I've bought new tiers for other friends as gifts, but he's a cheap bastard and he's going to buy his own game. If you can afford a new car, you can dish out 25 bucks for this project. I've already been spamming info on facebook, but even there I'm getting a little pushy. "Okay, there's not much time for folks to pledge for Project Eternity. Now, some of you might not understand, but it's not 'donating' money to the Project. The game is already fully funded, so if you pledge money at the beginning, which you can do through Amazon, you will get the game at a discount and, depending on what you pledge, you will also get added benefits and other things. Please consider pledging to Project Eternity. You'd end up with a great game at far lower prices than retail and you'll have a chance to move the industry toward quality development. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obsidian/project-eternity" My wife has graciously, if no knowingly, decided to help also. It's getting down to crunch time and we need to figure out how to pull out all the stops. As our personal outlay dwindles, we need to figure out ways to encourage friends to buy into the project.

This is great, especially the Wasteland 2 game, since I haven't used kickstarter in the past and didn't really know much about it. There really isn't anything in here that compels me to increase my pledge, There's probably no new bumps that will get me to increase my base tier, but there may be add-ons that could, conceivably, get me to increase my pledge. I'm with aVENGER. I'm damned happy to hear about the xpac. My experience with dlc is kind of 'meh.'

Live recorded music, Poll 2.0
Cantousent replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I can see the argument against a full orchestra. I can't understand folks not wanting at least some instruments used. The whole point of this game is that it's a fan funded experience that values quality production over a quick turn over. With that in mind, I most *cynically* suggest that being able to cite some "live" instruments will help class up the project. In fact, I'm not making a quality over quantity argument. I'm making an argument that a specific musical quality will enlarge the project altogether. If... *if* Bell can put those live instruments to good use and create something memorable and put it into a superior recording, then he'll be taking advantage of a wider variety of what the medium can offer and maybe even help to move the medium in some small way. My main point is that music might not seem all that important to a lot of folks, but it is, in practicality, important to the project. Use synthesized music to the betterment of Project Eternity. I know Obsidz has a budget, and I don't want it blown on a pie in the sky effort to make the definitive masterpiece of our times. They're going to use synthesized music, and that music will undoubtedly be beautiful. At least I hope so. However, are you saying that you cannot think of ways to take advantage of "live" instruments to the greater benefit of the project? If Bell says it won't make any difference, I'll do what I've been doing on issues like these and drop the subject. I'm all for Obsidz making the decision. If they don't have the money, fair enough. If they don't think it will add anything, fair enough. However, if they can budget some live instruments and those instruments will add to the grander glory of the project as a whole, they should invest the funds to include them. Music is peculiar. It might not seem like it's all that important, but it has the singular characteristic of imbuing prestige onto a product. A good effort will immediately be a great effort and a great effort can become a classic. That's true for movies and tv shows. It's true for games. If authors could create attending scores for their novels, it would be true for books. You want a classy game that's more likely to become a classic, don't just throw tunes together. I have never learned to play an instrument. I've only got my own two ears and forty-three years of listening, but I know what I like when I hear it and I want to hear something I love when I play this game. -
I thought that there was an official announcement, when the devs said the game would be available on GoG, of getting either the STEAM or non-STEAM version of the game. If it's an issue to you, you might want to take a gander. I also think, since there's about a million different places that have info, the devs should pick out the most contentious issues and FAQ them or something so there's an easy place towards which to point folks with questions like this.
-
I still contend that they should sell tickets to the release party for the game as an add-on. Then take a quarter or so of the proceeds to pay for the party. offer pizza and sodas and maybe beer or wine or something. I can't imagine buying a ticket, but there have to be enough local people to make it worthwhile and, frankly, if there aren't a lot of ticket sales, you're not going to have to pay much for the party either. lol The only way I'd buy a ticket is because one of the people I'm gifting the game to is a huge Obsidz fan (because I gave him my xbox copy of KotOR2 a long time back and he loved it).

:Cant's shrugging icon: I anticipated I would take as much or more heat for my post than metiman likely will for his. That's fair enough. I contend that talking about piracy in general, which I don't do, is quite different than plainly stating your intent to pirate a game developed by the people who so graciously host this forum. I don't have any animosity towards metiman, but I disagree with you on this, ddillon. Of course, I have no animosity for you either. Just speaking the plain truth about how I view the issue.
-
Personally, I'm all for folks, even obnoxious folks, sticking around and having a say in what goes on. However, advocating or alluding to your intention to pirate the game should be sufficient grounds to get you placed on moderated status, which is exactly what I would do at this moment if I were still a mod. I like you, metiman. I think you've got intestinal fortitude and conviction. ...But I've actually put my money where my mouth is with this project and it's kind of idiotic to have folks come here and talk about pirating the game my money is helping to fund.

The only thing I could think of right now is if I were convinced that my wife would play and enjoy the game. Taking my current pledge to the next tier amount would allow me to split the pledge into four or five different tiers. I could maybe do that. I'll never be able to defend spending a grand on this kickstarter project. I would love to have the money. I would love to have ten grand to spend. ...But I don't. So, the things that would appeal to me would be t-shirts or other physical good that I could gift to folks. Anything either functional (such as Monte's thumb-drive) or with broad appeal so that someone else could find it useful or enjoy it. If there's something I can show my wife to convince her that there's something in the game for her to enjoy, that would be the best thing. Basically, I don't care about my name in gold. I won't permanently use any forum title other than the one I get normally (and I would actually rather have no title at all). I don't care about knick knacks or other cheap swag. I do want the soundtrack and artwork. I'm looking forward to the ring tones. I'm probably going to stick with my current pledge because I can't see spending more, but maybe some physical goods add-ons or something unforseen in terms of digital add-ons would do the trick.

I'm not at home and I don't sign onto facebook from this location. However, I will like your link when I arrive. As it turns out.... I *do* have something better to do on a Saturday night, such as head out for some Indian cuisine with the wife. :Cant's wolfish grin icon:

Reddit Q&A Part 2 with Tim Cain
Cantousent replied to The Guildmaster's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I don't mind limited saves on harder levels or the like, but it's not like there should be an artificial punishment for the party being lazy bastards. At some point, the solution strains disbelief more than the problem in the first place. Eventually, hard core gamers are going to get over the fact that some folks are having fun in a different way and live through the pain. Now, I don't mind your solutions, Valor, as long as they're sensical to the plot and story. If the game punishes folks for resting too often in a way that is clearly meant to be intrusive, I will disagree with it on any setting. After all, I can already play iron man and have no saves. You might be able to have a setting limiting rest under expert modes but, frankly, why not just rest less if you think it's a cheesy place? I agree with some of the ideas you have in order to encourage less resting as long as they don't appear to be thrown in just to placate the hard-core crowd. If limits on resting seem like a natural part of the story and that particular area. I think throwing a blanket wrench in the resting scheme pell mell on every setting would be wrong. After all, if someone wants to play on normal and spend all of his or her time sleeping, more power to 'em. I think the more hard core crowd should have their way on some issues, but I would rather the devs simply balance resting as best they can. With that said, I guess I don't mind it as a separate mode. I think it's unnecessary, but that's just my take.- 54 replies

Well, Squeky, you could be your own pet in the game. Nice Avatar. I think some folks will find it jarring to have a pet. I mean some of the grognards, but I always seemed to end up with that... Lim Lim? in PS:T. Just imagine that the cat evaded the dragon fire like a good thief.

Dude, do you want me to, y'know, arrange an accident? doofus. :Cant's broad grin icon: Hey, any way I can get the wife to buy into my gaming habit is good. I'm not particularly fond of vanity pets, but I don't hate them per se. I am happy, however, to be packing more levels onto that mega dungeon which was, if I'm not mistaken, your idea, you glorious bastard.

I've enjoyed my exhanges with MReed, but I have to admit I guffawed at this one. I don't want anyone to leave. Hell, I want to host a huge party and pass around various adult beverages and then spend the whole night body blocking potential combatants. I still think the broad categories are too broad. You can manufacture categories in any number of ways, but to buy into MReed's lists, nothing is a deal breaker for me so far. If I found out it was turning into the fantasy dating game (hetero or gay) or fantasy dance dance revolution or the medieval game of the rising proletariat, I would remove my pledge. Barring stuff like that, I think I'm good.

The spirit of a long dead sage is not a pet. If they want to give us a pet, then it should be a pet. It's one of the ways I'm going to try to convince my wife to play the game with me. She likes all that WoWesque sort of stuff and the like. If they come out saying that players will get pets, they should at least seriously consider small furry animals or various types. How they implement them is another story. Now, if they tell us we'll have a non-combat companion who interacts essentially like other npcs, I would rather they came right out and stated it so that it doesn't sound like a pet.

I like the idea up above about the dog that's waiting out our redoubt/stronghold/house/wizard condo/apartment. However, I would have a cat and that would require a steward to secure foodstuff and litter and also to clean out the catbox daily. Might as well take advantage of the benefits of in-game pets and make someone do all the dirty work. On a serious note, will we have steward and other staff? How big of a house are we talking? Arghhh, I really don't want to know, but I *do* want to know, if you see what I mean. Must. Resist. Spoiling. game.

Aw, I say stick around and give everyone hell. I mean, I think you're fairly insane, but I think you should have the right to express that insanity here (within reason, of course). As long as the crazies don't cook someone's pet poodle or something, I think a nice heated debate livens up the joint.

For some reason, I luaghed out loud at this. I don't know. I really don't care about vanity pets. If it's entirely vanity and cannot be killed or just runs around after the pc, I won't care about it one way or the other really. I have real life pets, after all. I don't need a virtual one. If it's killable, woundable, or needs care in any way, I"ll probably just be frustrated. ...But the things like vanity pets and colorful costumes and crafting and other things I don't care about as much appeal to the wife, and so I guess the big thing will be if I decide to do something for my wife, in which case she'll get the highest tier I've purchased and *I'll* be theone taking hte 35 buck tier. lol

Reddit Q&A Part 2 with Tim Cain
Cantousent replied to The Guildmaster's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Yeah, I get you WNE. I meant that to be funny and it just came across as mean, which is sad because I usually laugh much more than fight in about any condition, but especially now. It *is* true, however, that the little things that get to you tend to draw out your more combative side. I'm not exempt from that. I really firmly believe that incidental XP is bunk, but that issue is decided and so I try to put it aside. I honestly think people who hate cool-downs should keep advocating for what they believe within reason but, unless it's a deal breaker, they should be willing to cool off on it once it's completely decided by the devs. Luckily for me, no one particular thing is a deal breaker. I guess if they made it a dance game requiring a floor pad or something, I would withdraw my support and pledge, but outside of crazy stuff likke that I'm onboard.- 54 replies

I can't believe you said that. Nothing will assuage the fears of the folks who hate cool downs. Don't you understand? You can't be an internet cowboy if you don't stick to your guns and fight like hell over every small damn thing on which you decided at the instance.- 54 replies

I'm actually mad, but I think I might upgrade my 35 buck pledges for gifts to 50 bucks, at least for two of them. I'm getting pretty close to the next tier, and so I don't know if I'll just upgrade to that and then give my digital downloads to other folks and then dish out the swag also. I really should reread this whole thing in the morning to make sense of it. :Cant's blurry-eyed squinting at the screen icon: EDIT: I'm with... I beg pardon, but I can't remember the name, but I'm with the guy who wants cats. I want a cat. They are, if I remember it rigth, the most popular pet in the United States. ...And if they aren't I don't give a crap and I still want cats.
