  1. Even if Bush is a Gospel Singer short of a choir, he is still surrounded by the best advisors and management talent money can buy, so I fail to see how White House decisions can be as bad as they are made out in the various media. Take Iraq, for example. I don't think there are many people who still believe there was a justified (or justifiable) WMD reason to invade the country, yet there are clear and justifiable defence reasons for invading Iraq. A stable source of energy is essential for any country. Defence, the first order of business for a government, requires energy just as much as industry ... the rise of Salafi / Wahabism (the doctrine that al Qa'ida adhere to) and the clear, declared threat posed to any authority placed above the theocracy (i.e. all secular governments including elected democracies) provides sufficient probable cause for any country to want to stabilise the energy source by neutralising the overt threat. It is only international window dressing that requires these byzantine machinations are labelled for distraction ...

  4. Doesn't look like he's going to be at the moment. However, a theory I heard this morning runs as follows: Libby's the only guy with whom the prosecutor has a case he's convinced could not possibly end in acquittal. Libby's obviously not the end of the chain, but right now the evidence against, for example, Rove or even Cheney or Bush, is too thin to guarantee conviction. So he's putting the squeeze on Libby (and I'd imagine a potential 30 years and a million dollar plus fine is some kind of squeeze), and is going to let his legal team realize that he's going to lose no matter what, and then offer him some sort of plea bargain in exchange for testifying against the higher ups. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Reminds me of the end to Quiz Show ...

  10. I haven't had time to do anything in the last two weeks, let alone fun. My partner was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, and I've been by her side in hospital whilst she underwent surgery, so life has unfortunately cramped my gaming style, as it were. I found the lag in Civ 2/3 (same engine) bad enough once there were more than two dozen cities to manage ...
