Update #58: Crafting with Tim Cain!
Gorth replied to Darren Monahan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I wonder how "modular" the crafting system is going to be in its design. Let's say, I figure out how to make a nice shortsword for guy. I can't find any recipe for adding fire effects, but I found this nice note sheet. So, if I combine the two, would I get a "singing sword" which plays a little jingle instead of burning flames when scoring a critical hit? Yeah, just thinking out loud. Sort of gives away that I'm an old Nethack fan- 633 replies

Just no. They may not have lived to the "ripe old age" by our standards but plenty of Emperors went by what in their day would be natural causes. Slightly exaggerated, yes. Out of 94 emperors, approximately 25 died from natural causes (including plague). A few are questionable, as they may or may not have been poisoned (never proven either way). The rest was either murdered or committed suicide. I still think you would have the odds stacked against you as Roman Emperor. Lifestyle hazard?

It took at least 3 seconds for me to realize, that you weren't talking about rainforests...

...and? He was the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of a 400 year tradition, each successive Caesar following in his footsteps

"Tank Commando", that would be Vanguard? The previously mentioned handful of characters that don't get much playtime is mostly there so I have something "meaningful" to do with item drops that my main guys (and my smuggler girl) can't use. I had been playing for number of weeks, before I realised I could email items as attachments (and had been wondering why the galaxy had mailboxes everywhere) Edit: Somewhat unrelated, but one of the first things I invested in was the Legacy unlocks that equips my ships with all the conveniences (GTN, Mailbox etc.) so I don't have to visit the space stations that often. I wonder if there are any plays to also offer mod stations for ships. Whoever designed the space stations apparently thought it funny to place the supply stores and the mod stations in exact opposite ends. Empire and Republic both. Oh, and the Mission Terminal seems bugged, never showing up on the maps, even if set to "tracked". Running around in circles FTW Edit2: The latest introduced bug, that yanks companions out of their crew missions is most frustrating. Done 1 hour and 10 minutes of a 1 hour 15 minute mission? sucks to be you if you forget and mount a speeder. Get shot at, forced to dismount and your bloody companion will happily have wasted the last hour and return to tell you to 'STAND STILL!' (Elara, while jabbing a syringe in my shoulder or whatever).

I don't remember the exact number, but IIRC, the number of Caesars dying from old age in the 400 years after the Republic can be counted on one hand. Survival of the fittest (or most important lobby group) indeed. As for Egypt, sad to say, but I don't think it has much of a future. The population is currently 4 times the size (in my uneducated estimate) of what their infrastructure can sustain. Most of them are going to be without work or a future regardless of whoever currently holds power. No oil, no industry worth mentioning, mediocre agricultural processes... Rather sad when 80 million people rely so much on tourism.

No worries, just looking for advice from experienced players who may understand the numbers and skills a bit better than myself. Amusing anecdote... he started life because I had some bad ass damage dealing cyborg with an oversized assault cannon in mind. As it turned out, he always ended up assigned the healer role in flashpoints, so around level 21-22 I respecced him as healer. Of course it was a disaster at the beginning, but then I had the fortune, us getting stuck in Cademimu and players leaving left and right (we couldn't beat Xander), an "oldie" turned up with a lot of helpful tips, telling the noob tank what he was doing wrong and me, the noob healer, how to most efficiently using some of my special abilities. Replacement players weren't that easy to come by either, as it was still on the old APAC servers before the move. I don't remember his name, but my old character is eternally grateful for the advice (patiently) given. Oh, and after an hour and a half, we finally beat the FP.

Who would alacrity be useful for? Since my dedicated healer Commando is due for equipment upgrade, I was having a look at surge and alacrity, since those healing powers are often needed here and now (as in, immediately) when you get "spikes" in your workload and the tank suddenly drops from max to almost dead.

That "cat burglar" is absolutely adorable. It'll probably be off to buy a box of luxury cat food

Ros's dating supremacy, counted by the amount of dates, is now under a firm assault by the veteran Guard Dog, who dominates all in the length of his... individual dates. Must have been the phase of the moon or something, I don't think I've ever gotten a booty call from someone I wasn't "going steady" with, never mind two from two different women in the same weekend. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that, I guess. Also, work computer's stalling every minute or so. I think this is 5 years old, it certainly is the largest and heaviest laptop I've ever had the displeasure of carrying. Maybe GD scores a few extra points for dating responsibly, recycling his dates. Ros seems to be into the disposable dates

I've got a handful of characters there. Republic: 'Xantrailles' (Trooper) and 'Alitass' (Smuggler) Empire: 'MacRoth' (ex-Gorth) (Bounty Hunter) and 'Useedok' (Sith Warrior) Got a sniper too, but haven't played him for a while. ...and a handful of low level characters used for variety. If you want to, look up one of them some day, although it's most likely to happen on a weekend (time zone difference).

Company confiscated my old dumb-phone. I'm now stuck with a smart-phone. I hates it already

Aliens Crucible... one of those great "What if?" games. It could have been good, it could have been awful. The idea sounds great though, a mixed bunch of people, not necessarily "warrior" types, having to survive.

The Great Barrier Reef? Tiny animal, but it sure builds a lot of coral reefs

[like] Just kidding, but I hear you. It was one of the first things that left a bad taste, that and the feeling of "unresponsiveness" (for lack of better description) of the controls compared to TW1. Not necessarily a keyboard vs gamepad thing (since I have both), but it just felt sluggish compared to the first game, not sure why. The horrible UI was one of the main factors killing the game for me though.

Which server are you on? I got characters on both the RP and PVE server, although Begeren is where my high level ones are. Oh, and as for the Foundry, I think that particular achievement mentioned above is bugged. Completed it a third time and it still didn't get ticket off as completed. No big deal, at least I know I didn't miss anything during the mission. Edit: With the silly double XP weekends, didn't really play a lot (apart from the above Foundry run), managed the hardest (first) of the two boss fights with only 3 man going in (healer gave up and left halfway through, one of the two dps guys filling in the role on a part time basis, keeping my tank alive, sadly no achievement for that. Otherwise mostly just trading and keeping the crew busy, getting close to reaching level 400 in several crew skills... and cherry picking quests that gives no or little xp.

In my experience. there tend to be less jerks when you get to the higher level FP's... I like to think they get "weeded" out

Speaking of flashpoints, I'm wondering if anybody can tell me if the following in The Foundry is a bug or a feature (as in, the group has overlooked something twice): Not that I care a lot about achievements, but some of them are nice hints that there are things and places that I've missed.

Toga parties is one of the things I miss from my teenage years

Heh, I have an old P-IV with 4gb ram, which I'm soon going to put a hammer through the HDD (data protection all right) and put out for rubbish collection. A bit of a shame, as it has been running flawlessly for many years, but too big, noisy and slow has condemned it to obsolescence.

Having Sten and Zevran in your party was fun. IIRC also the only combo that would give you insight into the renegade Qunari, because Zevran would bring up the subject in Stens company.

I would love if it humdinged in the exploration department. At least a little bit. Blame life, work, etc. I'm somewhat out of the loop (and grateful for a place to have consolidated information in). I haven't been able to follow it, so I'm playing a game of catch up If they actually go and put some effort into making exploration fun, I'll be a very happy gamer. The original Tombraider was the last game I remember where exploration was fun (and the objective of the game really). Of course, Tombraider went and did away with all that in subsequent installments and the game took a nosedive, but that doesn't take anything away from the original. Exploration done well would rock indeed Edit to add: Come to think of it, I'm not sure if it was Fallout or TR that was the last "exploration" game.

Having both Steam, Origin and GOG accounts, I'm not really too picky, as it wouldn't add an extra "burden" (or whatever you would call it) on me. I am curious about how much of the story is going to be about characters (protagonist, companions, npcs etc.) and how much is going to be EPIC struggle between two factions I learned to dislike in equal measure in the first two games. Crossing fingers and hoping for the former
