Yes, only Lucas chose to portrait only the 'positive' side of samurai culture, if there was any at all. He didn't use as an inspiration the constant political intrigues in which samurai warlords were involved, and he certainly didn't consider the state of quasi-slavery that ruled feudal Japan, whose pinnacle were the samurai. In fact all that would apply much better to the Sith... About the swords, samurai would only get down to swordfighting as a last resort. A samurai's basic skill was supposed to be marksmanship, and they relied heavily on lances, a much more efficient weapon for mounted knights. Their swords were more of a symbol than anything else. I believe the word samurai itself has something to do with either 'rider' or 'archer', I just can't remember how exactly.

The screenies are not new, but good find anyway. -
Designer Rambling: Wookiees

Heh. You couldn't even get him to disembowel some of those arrogant Czerka morons. I guess that would have prevented him from winning 'the most passive NPC ever' award. -
How could you possibly not find it? Oh, don't tell me, you were rushing through the game. "

question about the mysterious box in kotor
213374U replied to RealTalk's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Yeah, it would make for a good sidequest. Like 'hey, I've got this prison-box in which a nice little fellow black rakata has been trapped for the last 100k years. How 'bout setting him free?'. I don't think you would make many friends around the unknown planet with that box. -
No you can say what you feel of course. Personally to me thats sort of in the same vein as someone who would say that For Whom the Bell Tolls the movie is much better book. I would have to disagree fervently but I'm sure someone out there believes that. I use this as an example because in the case of movies being turned to books there is not a real fair comparision. I've never read a Star Trek novel, because Star Trek bores the hell out of me. I think that alot (not all) of people who actually like the EU better never really appreciated what it took for Star Wars to be created, much less sucessful. Its alot easier to write a novel about a world that has already been created then it is to come up with your own ideas, your own characters, factions, etc. To me these authors have been given so much and have done so little, it sad <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Impressive. You manage to make sense from time to time. Keep it up. For me there's a simple rule... comics are OK, novels suck. Big time. That said, I will admit the only TotJ series I didn't find painful to read was 'Redemption'. The new comics 'Republic', 'Jedi', and the Jango Fett series are pretty good. But nothing compares to the movies, period.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to get into the busty female Jedi's trousers. Unless of course you prefer to get into the whining male soldier's, that is.

You seem to forget that Samurai had absolutely no respect for the lifes of anyone of an inferior caste... which was pretty much everyone around them since they were feudal lords.

How many playthroughs of KOTOR?

Not to mention you're stuck with that awkward and painfully limiting piece of garbage known as 'controller'. And finally this thread has been turned into the classic 'PC vs Xbox' fight. Yay!

Aren't they the same person?

Designer Rambling: Security Skill

And here I thought you actually liked Star Wars. " -
Assuming that the 'previous protocol droid' was in fact HK-47 is a very long shot. There are other protocol droids in the universe, you know.
-
I'm not sure, but I think even though both of them are Sith Lords, there can only be one Dark Lord of the Sith.

Do you guys keep even numbers?
213374U replied to Zach Morris's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
In fact I prefer to start with 3 or 4 stats in odd numbers and the rest even. That way I can get better stat modifiers in those when leveling instead of having to focus all the bonus stat points in one stat. -
No.
-
Not quite. Revisions to pnp rulesets are often made upon player feedback, in order to solve problems or unbalances found by players. Again, I'm not sentencing Obsidian's modifications to death. But designing a whole new level scale above 20 is no simple matter, and like it or not, was unnecessary. They have taken the risky path when there was no need to. Maybe their work on the d20 ruleset will turn out to be great and absolutely flawless from a gameplay and balance standpoint, we'll see. But considering they are aiming at a similar game length as K1 had, it's obvious there will be XP inflation. And that is not a good sign.
-
No, that's not what I said. I said that Obsidian's modifications haven't been proven effective and balanced by thousands of gamers worldwide yet, while the D20 system, has. My point was, it's not only unnecesary to further modify the D20 ruleset, it's also risky since can result in serious gameplay unbalance. Beginning to be affected by the post-before-you-think syndrome as well, are we? "

Agreed. Lucas created this whole thing, so it's his universe after all. Your liking or disliking a certain part, doesn't mean it's 'wrong'. It's Lucas' opinion that counts after all, and if some EU works get thrashed in the way, well, they knew what they were risking when they chose to work on someone else's universe. I still am not convinced that the prequel masters are weak compared to the Jedi of the NJO era. Some of the things in the EU are just lame, and would never make it into a movie. They need to write that kind of stuff to set themselves apart from other authors and attract readers. I tend to favor that option. Maybe he didn't decide about having the Emperor be the ultimate Sith Lord until after giving Vader his title. I don't even know up to what point the Sith are an EU invention, either.

What do you all KOTOR fans do for a living?
213374U replied to Who are these people?'s topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
It's no wonder I can't comprehend what you write. Your spelling makes it undecipherable. -
Yes, I realize that. However, it turns out the D20 system is a complete and constantly revised set of rules which has been proven to be effective and well balanced (well, mostly), by thousands of fans around the world. Obsidian's modifications to this system, on the other hand, have not.

I'm a sperm donor. -
Yep. Obi-Wan was level 10 in AotC and like 15 in ANH. Jedi reach Knighthood by level 7, and the prerequisite for the Jedi Master PC is either have an apprentice, or 12 levels in Jedi classes. Not only that... in D&D, there are manifestations of gods, demigods, powerful demons, and mortals whose power is close to deity. The need to regulate those beings through game rules brought about the epic levels... the cheapest invention of D&D, if you ask me.

Yep. They were allowed to love, and have children.

It's pretty inconsistent that in the PT Jedi had to train with a Master for 20-25 years to become Knights, and Luke 'figured stuff out' in about 5 years, with just a few weeks to learn from Masters. Anyway, on to the topic. The supernova trick wasn't performed by sheer Force power. It was done through a Sith weapon that needed a Force user to channel Force energy through it. It wasn't Exar Kun, it was Naga Sadow and Aleema. I believe Jedi can use the Force to plot courses through hyperspace without the need for a computer. Don't remember where I read that though. The Emperor Force storms seemed pretty nasty, too. And of course, the uber-lame Force link severing on another Force sensitive.
