Yeah, I think I'll just repeat my statement about things getting weird here. You guys win, I've been shouted down. I'll shamble off now.
-
I see your point TN. I am not trying to dispute the idea that there is a real struggle within feminism on how to move forward, it is pretty clear that there are dramatically different schools of thought. My concern lies with the response that I'm seeing towards feminism across the internet, but particularly here. There is this burgeoning passive aggression about the patriarchy. We are a community with very few women, yet the threads on sexism and feminism are hotbeds of opinions and conflicts. It's really created a weird environment, one that did not exist a few years ago. It is hard to define, and so I'll step away and shrug my shoulders for a bit.

I just want to clarify: Feminism is now a bad thing because of Tumblr and Anita Saarkesian. Is this correct?
-
Uh, your a feminist. Seriously, it's not an insult. Why are you guys just rolling over and letting this tumblr thing and a small fry like Sarkeesian take over the word? Christina Sommers, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Malala Yousafzai should be your examples of feminism. They refer to themselves as feminists. Meshugger posted a video earlier of Janice Fiamengo, and a professor, called herself a femininist, and them proceeded to lambast Fiamengo for her views.

We've come a tremendous way since the 50's and 60's, but we hardly live in a Utopia of equality. Emma Watson's speech does a better job then I can of arguing where the work still lies. The international situation is where you really see the contrast. Thanks for posting that Raithe. Everyone should watch it, it does a much better job of stating what I wanted to say in my original post.

Gaming history - do you think it's important?
Hurlshort replied to Starwars's topic in Computer and Console
Because it gives you context. It also allows you to predict the future, but I'm supposed to keep that a secret. -
Why give a small radical group the power to take over the word feminism? It is a powerful one with a long history, it shouldn't be easily tarnished by the whims of a vocal group on the internet. Also, why is this the point that many of you choose to draw the line in the sand? The internet is filled with caustic racism and homophobia. Why are tweets about misandry and misogyny such a focal point?

Hey guys, so I'm noticing this weird thing online where the word feminism has become some negative catch phrase, and it is super awkward. Feminism is an important historical movement that has covered a myriad of struggles for the rights of women. It has been an important part of the civil rights movement, and given the fact that many countries do not offer anywhere near equality towards women, it still has an important role in society. You should encourage feminism, because it is encouraging rights for your mothers, your sisters, and your daughters. I want my daughter to be able to travel anywhere in the world and be afforded the same rights as anyone else. I support feminism. Now I've seen a lot of example thrown up of radical feminism. This is not the same thing as feminism. It is radicalized, hence the first part of the word. The tricky part is at one point, most ideas are radical. Women voting was at one time a radical idea. In a lot of ways, radical feminism is a form of theoretical feminism. You come up with a bunch of narratives, and eventually the crazier ones get weeded out and the rational ones enter the mainstream. Now feel free to voice your concerns about certain theories within feminism. You can be pro-life and still be a feminist. You can rescue the princess in the castle and still support feminism. Again, there are a myriad of movements within feminism. My wife blames feminism for the fact that it is hard to find men holding doors open for ladies, that the concepts of being a gentleman have been lost under the push for strong independent women. But she is also a strong and vocal independent woman with an education and a career. She is setting an example for my daughter and her students as to what women are capable. She is the greatest feminist I know. I support her fully. So feminism is a complex term that should be treated as such. Derision and scorn towards feminism in general not only places you firmly on the wrong side of history, it makes you look insecure about your own place in society. So yeah, lets use some caution with the whole feminism = bad stuff I'm seeing so much of online.

Yeah a good chiropractor or massage therapist could really help if you think it is muscular. With both it is important to find one that is highly qualified, there are a ton of terrible ones out there. With massage you can typically tell how good it is by the amount of pain they put you through and the amount of circulation you regain. It should be painful on the table, but you should also feel a ton of more blood flow to the extremities. I've had hundred of massages over the years from different people, and really only two have deserved the word therapist. If you can find someone trained in seifukujitsu massage you will probably be on the right track, it is a form of jujitsu. A decent chiropractor should have a fair amount of training in massage as well, and should also run you through exercises to strengthen muscles.

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Hurlshort replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I think people are overstating the costs of shipping a CD. I pledged $250, I think Obsidian can cover the 60 cents it costs to send a CD. I want my guidebook the day I start the game. -

I did jot down a quick poem for the missus. The Future Some day a powerful rocket will blast Deep into space in search of a new home Loaded with records of our ancient past Amongst the shining comets it will roam The caretakers of this majestic ship Will ascend from an epic lineage Born from the love of Missy and Patrick The catalyst, the spark of a new age Passion and faith will lead the human race Beyond our blanket of comforting stars Because love like ours is grander than space It could conquer the great red god of Mars Some day we will reach the heavens above And gift them the rich story of our love.

I'm going to go play hockey, and my wife is going to stay home and watch the kids. I got her flowers two weeks ago before the prices went through the roof, and I'm taking her to a nice dinner sometime next week. Screw the calendar.

Stephen Curry probably doesn't win the 3 point competition, he seems to to better under real pressure.

Happy to finish up the week, we leave for Vegas on Monday. Yay!

Sometimes it seems like Saint's Row and Just Cause are the only ones that remember games are supposed to be fun.

Apparently the former SOE is getting hit hard with layoffs and resignations. It is not looking good for Everquest and all the other titles developed there.

Nope. The forums are active and there was even a video posted by a community manager yesterday. Also, Obsidian is just the developer, they aren't running the forum and wouldn't make a decision on shutting the game down. Your issue is with My.com.

The wife and I are about two months into yoga, and we are definitely getting stronger. Workouts that wiped us out are much easier now, and so we've continued to add and mix up new stuff. We've done a mix of Denise Austin and this girl named Adriene. Crazy fact: Adriene is the voice of a bunch of characters in DC Universe Online.

Ah, you got me there. After playing BG: Dark Alliance, I realized the console stuff was not for me.

Of course. I played every one on release, including Tactics.

Gaming history - do you think it's important?
Hurlshort replied to Starwars's topic in Computer and Console
The history of postal service gives us a rich narrative on the efficiency and organization of budding empires. From the Quipu's of the Inca's to the Pony Express, delivering messages is nothing to make light of. -
Ubisoft have never disappointed me, then again I don't buy their games on release. Well I'm keeping them on the list because I hate that I need Uplay even when I buy a game on Steam.

Rationale discourse on current events and putting them in the context of comparable historical scenarios, of course.
