You know, they've (rpg developers) been making such a point of getting away from good/evil alignments for so long now, I kind of wouldn't mind having bg2 style good/evil companions again. If i really think of the rpg characters that are memorable to me, that includes more bg/pst than any other games

The 8 Companions
jones092201@gmail.com replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Why is game data that's not related to the beta in the beta builds? Honest question. -
Nah. I've played enough to know that it's not up to my standards. Can you define your standard? And not in vague terms. But using specific examples from crpgs? I'm not trying to flame you, but I can't figure out what you would be comparing this too. I can list cRPG's I've thought have been worth playing for various reasons: PS:T, IWD, Fallout 1/2/NV, Arcanum, NWN: MotB, NWN: SoZ, Gothic 2, Morrowind, The Witcher/2, KOTOR/2, ToEE, Jade Empire, Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall. I can also list cRPG's I've thought have been more frustrating, dull, or otherwise flawed than enjoyable: Oblivion, IWD2, DA:O, DA:I, ME1-2-3 (occasional moments of brilliance aside), FO3, Gothic 3. I can't define it any better than that. BG1 and 2 are both in the second bin. It may yet move into the first. I haven't ruled out another shot at it. So it seems like 5% of kotor 2 would be peragus, and 5% of kotor would be the endar spire. Is either of those representative of the whole game? By that same token, I don't remember much great writing in the first 5% of iwd or morrowind. Similarly, the origins in da:o were absolutely amazing and unique, and fallout 3 had a reasonable opening. Point is not to say you should like bg2, but the small amount of it you've played doesn't give you a good indication of the narrative or even the way battles play out later.

This whole thread seems to be a guy who played 5% of bg2 arguing with people who've played 5% of POE about which game is better. ( I take the % from a post above). 5% may be enough to to have an idea of game play, (though in either case, you've not seen all spells, equipment, etc) but it's not enough to make claims about the quality of the writing, narrative structure, pacing, etc. if you read 5% of lord of the rings, (or any novel) can you really make a claim about it? Prima- you'll miss a good game if you quit now, but I'd suggest not focusing on the negatives and the posting about them. Play through first

You might consider how much crpgs have changed since bg2. Since kotor and dragon age, people are more concerned w/ character depth and verisimilitude. We now want our characeters to be nuanced and reactive. This spills over into quest givers and villans , to an extent. Bg2 is about showcasing the world, showing you new and different enemies and world spaces. D&d is deep in the lore department, and the npcs exist to move you to these next fights/zones. Sure, they're a bit hackneyed and melodramatic, but I feel like people didn't care as much back then. In short, nowadays characters trump narrative (dragon ago inquisition). In the ie days, characters were secondary to pushing forward the narrative It'll be interesting to see what medium POE finds because, at some point, you do have to choose. Do you sit listening to the quest giver talk for 15 minutes about his feelings before he gives you the quest (well rounded character) or do you get straight to the quest and focus on giving multiple solutions,

I wish they'd just dump the animal companion. Aside for it not working as is, it pigeonholes an archetypal class that should be flexible and interesting. Understanding that POE is not defined by existing examples of the class, why do RPGs need another squishy pet controller? A ranger, like Aragorn or Drizzt, is a self sufficient skirmishes type, adept at surviving in the wild. They're not defined by a weapon type, or even ranged/ melee. Wouldn't it be more interesting character to have a ranger in the party, or build one, if... 1. Having ranger in party added a small stat bump at rest, similar to resting in an inn but less substantial 2. Ranger had high mobility, similar to the barbarian class talent- allowing you to either move to defend your wizards or race ahead to target a caster 3. Modal talents that let them switch between tanking (for a middling duration) and damage. 4. A set of talents that encouraged using ranged AND melee. Slowing effects/ control with the ranged, spike damage with the melee Essentially, they should become a fighter/thief class that adds new tactical opportunities to the game

Totally agree with you sensuki. Shared health pool makes absolutely no sense. I'm really not enjoying that class. I hate that ranger is ALWAYS a dinky ranged class with a dinky meat shield as the major draw. I don't know why crpg developers keep makimg it into this mmo class. Even the d&d class isn't like this. Think of the rangers in literature- Aragorn, Drizzt, even the way they are portrayed in wasteland and fallout- they are rugged survivalist, more akin to josey wales and obi-wan kenobi than the beastmaster from (you guessed it) beastmaster. The core concept is that a ragged stranger comes into town, somehow possessing a level of martial skill that seems at odds with their surroundings and apperance. Now I'm not directing this at OE, the problem is deeply ingrained in modern RPGs (though not infinity engine games, ironically), but I'd really hoped they'd try something different. And since the class doesn't work as is, and Santa forgot to get me a Ferrari, maybe OE could restructure the class to be more of a skirmisher/off-tank, someone with high mobility in combat, slightly less damaging the a rogue, but with modal tanking? Truthfully, I know this isn't going to happen, and I don't expect it to, but ranger is my class of choice, and I hate seeing it relegated to unplayable.

why do we not reload till after recovery time? I can understand if this is a balance issue by the devs, but it seems a bit much. The BB rogue gets off several shots before I get a chance to fire my second shot. I'd love to be able to fire a bit faster (and I do know there is a perk to cut the time). If I'm the rogue, or ranger, my damage seems to be underwhelming to the point the firearms being useless.

some bugs I've run across--- -BB fighter has no recovery time meter. just hacks away without having to run up the yellow bar -fighting naphrye - I killed some people behind the door, and wasn't able to retrieve the loot --switching from guns to melee, I seem to be stuck with reload time for the gun when attacking....also, I hold my saber with the arquebus animation....this was not an issue switching from pistol to single wield, one handed ---when trying to queue a hobble attack (as rogue), each time a press the ability command, I have to restart the reload animation. I'd imagine these have been reported, but I thought I'd report if not. anyways, enjoying the game. keep up the good work

Friendly Fire Toggle
jones092201@gmail.com replied to Re-Volt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
DA: I friendly fire was horrid. Iron Bull especially. Why in the hell would you want to be in the guys mercenary group? He's going to kill you by accident in the first charge. Every. Time. -
Single Wield
jones092201@gmail.com replied to Arcane Paladin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Yeah, I thought I had planned a good single wield- talents and all- but couldn't beat medreth, then crush him wielding a two handed sword without two handed talents. Did it in like 3 hits. -
Single Wield
jones092201@gmail.com replied to Arcane Paladin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Has anybody been building one handed characters? I've been using a rogue, with cautious attack and high dex to hopefully offset the speed reduction for the perk. Anyone else have build ideas? -
Talents in 392: Incentives for Non-Class Talents?
jones092201@gmail.com replied to Osvir's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I like the OP's idea. I'd like to have some small perk, maybe once every 3 or 4 levels, that kind of related what my character was doing outside of murdering things and otherwise shaping the world. Something that fleshed out what he did on his free time, like at camp or whole traveling. Maybe her reads(+lore) or tinkers (+mechanics). If you gave a bonus perk every three or four levels, it doesn't seem like it would break the game. -
Guns to melee switching
jones092201@gmail.com replied to jones092201@gmail.com's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
True. Thanks. -
I seem to get stuck in the gun animation (holding my rapier like an arquebus, for example) and, I'm not sure, but I think my recovery time between attacks (with my melee weapon) is taking the same amount t of time as it would to reload. Am I crazy? Also, I don't seem to be able to queue an action (blinding strike or the other lvl 1 rogue attack) if try to do it while reloading. Seems I have to reload, then move before attacking, then pause to activate attack. Are these known issues?

I just got back in to the game a few days ago. Hadn't played the newest update. I'm liking it more and more. Maybe it's bc I'm understanding the spells better (I tended to use spells sparingly in ie games, as I never liked resting 16 hours in a fortress I was assaulting). I hope they add back skills as independent from talents, but I agree with OP- the game is coming along,

Nm. Got it. -
In the ruins, you seem to get to forge a weapon. Does it have to be the spear? I want a sword. Thanks.

All the writing will be good, for the reasons listed above. They've got good people building a world they are excited about. I'm glad they are keeping story and characters close to the vest. It's too easy to click the wrong link and learn something you didn't want to know.
