I never finished Pillars of Eternity.
Katarack21 replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)"Why did OE do this? Guns just destroy the epic fantasy sword and sorcery mystique for me." "This is escapist fantasy. It's a genre that is supposed to make us want to go on an adventure somewhere exotic and exciting. Nobody gets into epic fantasy just to enter a nightmare that makes us wonder why the protagonist doesn't just hang himself." Well, theres your problem. This was never intended to be sword and sworcery or high fantasy. You have far to strong an opinion about what "fantasy" means, and not enough willingness to accept that it means other things to me.

Can PoE grow as a franchise the way the Witcher did?
Katarack21 replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)They could easily make a successful AAA game in this setting. But PoE itself? No.

Is Deadfire having all new spells for every class?
Katarack21 replied to firkraag888's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)...of course not every single spell. Even Mass Effect Andromeda shares abilities ("spells") with the original Mass Effect. That's...that's basically standard in sequels...

crazy ideas you like to have (but most likely not get)

Katarack21 replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I've got a confession to make. I just cannot get into D:OS. I've tried to or three times. Tried different characters, different setups. I can't ever get past the first town. I just stop playing after a while. It....bores me.

Katarack21 replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Okay, you and I are definitely coming at this from different perspectives. I wonder if this might be the schizophrenia coming into play. Weird affect issues and such.

I never finished Pillars of Eternity.
Katarack21 replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)No. There is no such thing as a "bad idea", only ideas applied outside of their proper place. Any idea can be of use--if used correclty, in the right context and in the proper manner. No story trope is bad in the right story, etc. etc. But--and this is the important part--not every idea will work for what your trying to accomplish. That's where a strong vision comes in; you have to know what will work and what won't work for what you're trying to accomplish. You don't throw them out; you put them aside, and revisit them later to see if they might work with other projects.

Katarack21 replied to JFSOCC's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Remind me to never play any game with you ever. I liked the "equality is disgusting" part, too. Okay I'm exaggerating, that's not exactly what he said... Spoken like someone who relies on enforced equality for validation. Don't you think one would get better results in an environment where ideas actually have to earn their validation? How do you even recognize bad ideas if you pretend that every idea is equal? You start out with every idea being equal, then weed out the ideas that don't fit your theme, don't fit your goals, don't achieve what you want in a reasonable time, etc. etc. Every idea being equal in theory doesn't equate to every idea being equally applicable to every situation at every moment. While I'm on a tangent here, if you don't listen to what your players want *nobody will want to play your game*.

Katarack21 replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)like BG2 and KOTOR? Because those were best-selling RPG games. What I don't understand and would like to figure out is exactly what happened to make RTwP go from best-selling RPG's to...not. newer 3d modeling technology But KOTOR was very much 3D...

New health system - poll version
Katarack21 replied to Silent Winter's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Yes there is, and what you were doing is the former. No, it's not. You inferred something based on the fact that most of the people who bought Pillars didn't finish it. Doing so is illogical and irrational; the fact that most people who bought it didn't finish it is normal and typical and meaningless, both directly and indirectly. It's like saying "The sky is blue; now I know this doesn't mean anything directly about gun murders in Chicago, but...". It's a specific thing you said, which I isolated to comment on because it's wrong. That's all. Nope, you quoted the thing out of context. Here is the quote, *with* the context. Had you bothered to even read that very paragraph to its end with any thought, you would've noticed that you were arguing about a non issue we had no disagreements on. Dishonesty is the highest form of disrespect, and not bothering to try and understand the context of these very specific things people say is a form of dishonesty. A very minor form that is as often born out of fatigue and oversight as arrogance, but a form nonetheless. I didn't infer anything based on the fact that most people don't finish the game, I merely used the fact to point out the fallacy of the 'most people are like x' - argument."Yeah, I know, the two issues aren't directly related" No, you tried to link the two thoughts then weaken them with that so that you weren't held accountable to your weak logic. It's called "weasel words" and is a form of fallacy. It *is* intellectual dishonesty. Your implying that the two are indirectly linked. They're not.

Can PoE grow as a franchise the way the Witcher did?
Katarack21 replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)The major difference is low fantasy with a degree of gritty realism vs high fantasy with all that implies. Nobody in Warhammer dies a slow death from gangrene after a minor wound from a no-name mook during a minor combat, for example. In Warhammer, hero's only die as a result of huge, epic battles against their foils in battles that decide the fate of civilizations. The dark, low magic, "realistic", semi-historical gritty fantasy genre is something that ASOIAF didn't originate but definitely helped codify and popularize. Still, I understand.

Can PoE grow as a franchise the way the Witcher did?
Katarack21 replied to Skyleaf's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)You think ASOIAF is trying to be dark and edgy but Malazan: Book of the Fallen is doing things right? Okay, then. You do realize that ASOIAF was published first and Malazan came about after the dark, gritty fantasy started to get popular, right?

Paradox Interactive Store Key
Katarack21 replied to Archaven's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)It's in the FAQ : https://www.fig.co/campaigns/deadfire#faq The last paragraph says that the coupon is "redeemable on Paradox's website for a Steam key". Can't be any clearer. I'm sorry but if you don't even read FAQs I don't know how they could have given that information to you, that's what FAQs are for. The prices in Western Europe (and probably Canada) are pretty much the same as in the US, so it's not only interesting for American people. Sorry. "This coupon is a joke for anyone outside of the culturally white world." Better?

I am very disappointed to hear the party will be reduced to five.
Katarack21 replied to Gregorovitch's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I *much* prefer having two tanks over one. An off-tank to catch melee NPC's who would otherwise bypass the main tank (either due to sheer numbers or paralyze/stun/etc) isn't always needed, but is needed often enough and in those situations fights will often be much, much more difficult without.
