Where is your Subtitle?
Silent Winter replied to StrangeCat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Nice - then we have Pillars of Eternity Episode 2: The Animancers Strike Back I notice you started with Episode 1 and left no room for the prequel trilogy (The Phantom Pillar et al) -
I like all of this except for the full-screen conversation box - I like seeing my character while they converse (even with no animation beyond the idle animation or battle-ready stance). So I'd prefer IE style convo box (perhaps replacing the combat log temporarily) that can be enlarged upwards or shrunk down. For the journal convo record, keep it as a separate page from the main journal. Having said that - I never had any real problems with the IE way of keeping it all together - ocassionally had to scroll back a bit, but you could do that before. (edit: before what? I have no idea what I was trying to say there, then I got distracted, clicked on post and then re-read it) *shrug*

Animal companions
Silent Winter replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Mummy-Kangaroo companion says "oh yeah?" I like the giant lizard idea too - Monitor Lizard ftw Mini Battle Elephant? Turtle-Power! (somebody had to say it) Maybe Rat companion could summon Rat-Horde for a special attack. -
*sudden idea for a PoE monster* Huge, bright-red troll that likes to try and hide behind small, green bushes before jumping out and saying "boo."

I'd like to keep it that way for the most part. Knowing their names and classes is ok, but I don't want too much backstory or where they are in the gameworld, etc - that's something I want to discover as I play.

In a fantasy crpg? I give you Khalid v. Sharteel ... FIGHT! Honestly, there's no reason to choose a man over a woman because you want a stronger/more-aggressive companion in a crpg. You'd go by their stats for that. I can understand wanting a fair mix of male+female, human/elf/dwarf/orlan/aumaua companions. If ALL the companions are female or ALL of them are Elves, there are understandable complaints from a variety persective.

Animal companions
Silent Winter replied to Monte Carlo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't think ranger companions are 'summoned' - I think they're permanently there. +1 for honeybadger. A Cassowary would be fun for a flightless bird with slashing damage Sounds good for a ranger companion Yep - it'll do. -
I get what you mean. And while I actually like the physical appearance of the godlike we've seen so far, I also imagine it would be good to get a 'vibe' from them instead. Either approach works for me, but I think Obsidian have gone with the 'you can't hide this heritage' way. In PoE-world, the godlike have a special place in society (sometimes revered, sometimes despised, maybe sometimes feared or even pitied) so they wanted something more obvious.

You could just drop an alternate Eder portrait into the override folder and use him with a different face (the 3D models won't be detailed enough to show it up). You could then use Eder's portriat for your PC. (I'd be surprised to the point of ' ' if there were no override folder that allowed this kind of thing)

The Case for Romance.
Silent Winter replied to NanoPaladin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Strategic? I want a really crunchy romance map dynamic! or map? I want a really crunchy strategic overland romance dynamic! -
So long as it's not 10 game-days later (waiting for the money) during which I've nothing to fill that time that doesn't involve travelling half the map away to do an entire dungeon (when my top-pack is full and I need the money for more arrows anyway), then this sounds like a reasonable solution. (If it's the former, you just end up resting to advance time and it seems silly). A day or 2 though sounds ok. + I like the addition of the bodyguards to safeguard the money. A week wait on a special weapon/armour to buy is ok though since I can still go adventuring without it.

The Case for Romance.
Silent Winter replied to NanoPaladin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
completely off topic but: 'Scinance' <- sounded cool in my head 'Fience' <-sounded less cool, but is closer to fiance, which brings us back to romance... *and the thread continued smoothly, despite the interruption* -

Anyone else read this with a Captain Kirk voice? -
No romances confirmed
Silent Winter replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In fairness - most of the BG2 romancable companions (even mod-ones) had pre-req things like 'Elf/Human/Half-Elf' and 'CHA 16' or 'GOOD' etc. (Though that also made them shallow ) Naturally Sagani would find me very attractive anyway (NB: I'm not at all fussed at the lack of PoE romance) -
Anyone else went "ENEMIES" when seeing those yellow circles. Odd color, still The blacksmith has been invaded by invisible-stalkers ... but now they're all in a panic because they keep tripping over the raised stones. Hey, that's ONE word! I'd imagine that Death-godlike priest would get an intimidation bonus: "HELLO! I'D LIKE A DISCOUNT, PLEASE." <- caps to represent Terry Pratchett style of Death-Speak.

I largely agree with your point about this - I'd suggest that the ocassional rambling NPC who doesn't get to the point is a good thing (almost like a reward to get the quest after listening to them when you might not have known there was a quest and told them to go away) and is also realistic in moderation. But in general it'd be nice to get "Er, hi...you look tough. I need someone to rid my village of vampires" -> choices to "I'll go right away" "tell me more" or "no thanks, maybe later" (as a basic example). Yes - something (preferably in-game actions but failing that, portrait indicator) would be good. I hate having to click through the same conversations in NWN2 again and again, only to find there's nothing new to say. Never knowing which quest completion or other condition has triggered something new. (This assumes we're going to have player initiated banters, but I don't see why not).

The Case for Romance.
Silent Winter replied to NanoPaladin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Yeah - Josh and the other devs have shown a lot of willingness to listen to the fans on this project. Some changes have been made (eg Intelligence to Might for damage) and some others rejected (romance) based on a number of factors (mostly: Are they in the budget and will they make the game better?). In the case of romance - there'll be mods (like the BG1 NPC mod) so it's not totally gone away. -
^^Well, it'd be entirely self-contradictory. There'd need to be no romance options, while at the same time every companion would be romancable. There'd be 6 stats but also 10 and 4. It'd be a class-based classless system. There'd be a large number of wilderness areas chock-full of encounters whilst at the same time very open and calming to explore. You'd need to have your characters rest, eat, drink and repair their armour in a highly micromanagement way that also is abstracted to not need any management. There'd be a limited unlimited inventory based on slots and size and weight. Also the stronghold would be an entirely optional essential part of the main story. sounds great

I got the same impression - just figured it was a design decision to have it more 'Big-Cat' like so more battle focussed. If they were going for more small-cat like then I'd agree the face should be smaller/differently propotioned (and then have different bonusses / weaknesses). I liked Hiro's smaller-feet version (but as already suggested - it might just look right in iso-view)

As much as I'd've liked a companion for each class, I'm sure they made their decision with all due consideration. Let's play the main game and hope it's successful enough for the expansion to include those extra companions/areas/etc. And echoing Labadal - time to unsticky this.

I thought there was going to be one attack roll that resolves hit/miss etc and damage. (simplifying the whole rolls part and using a 100 sided die for more range or something). (NB: 100-sided die used but numbes made up by me) So roll a 1-15=miss (no damage, obviously), roll a 16-40=graze=lower damage, roll41-81=hit=normal damage, roll82-100=crit=high damage. I could also be completely wrong. I also read that fighters get a bonus to weapons (melee at least, probably ranged too) so they'll be dealing more damage than a wizard in melee. But not sure where the bonus is applied. Wizards get a similar bonus to magical damage (or maybe they're the only ones who can use a grimoire anyway - I'm less sure on this)
