How much PoE1 in the sequel?
Quillon replied to evilcat's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Thought about it a bit more, this time with my brain :D There are too many choices in a 60-100 hours rpg where as in Tyranny you make IIRC 9 or so high level choices before heading into the game. Whether if any of the PoE companions are alive or dead choices alone equal to 11. And in "Conquest-style" there should also be some context for every choice... think about the famous PoE loredump all over again, a new playa would need dat lore to make those choices. Well, waaaaaAAAaaaaay too much work/imposibru. -

How much PoE1 in the sequel?

Yeah. Well, usually if something's right, most devs don't talk about it but if its wrong, they say no more easily to prevent false expectations and they probably aren't limited to not say what won't be in a game. But nvm, its guesswork atm. -

Isn't this(from codex interview) basically answering first & second question? -

Should we continue story of Watcher? Yes(or next incarnation of the same watcher) and this time we should take advantage of being a watcher instead of treating it as an affliction, it should be better integrated in gameplay/dialogue instead of just reading backer stories. Should we play as some other character? No and we can't. This will be a direct sequel and if we play f.i. Eder, then there won't be any race, gender, class, backstory etc choices. Besides I don't prefer pre-defined characters in RPGs. Cameos? Yes. Save Import? Said it many times already but yeah, there should be as much of the choices we made integrated as possible. Should be even better if we can make PoE 1 choices in character creation just like "conquest" in Tyranny's CC. -
I'd much rather they take different players decisions into account. I'd rather the choices I make matter--that they effect the story and game world--than just play through some dudes personal "THIS IS HOW THE STORY GOES" power trip. Absolutely. I can't take another Mass Effect 3. I was utterly devastated with how the trilogy ended. It was like "Hey you know those hundreds of hours you put into the previous game? Yeah none of that matters. Red, Green, Blue. Choose." That's another matter. ME3's case wasn't a "THIS IS HOW THE STORY GOES" power trip. it was rather a "THIS IS HOW WE F'd UP THE ENDING" power trip. Otherwise ME1-2 choices did matter in ME3 but none of them mattered in the end. PoE also ended like ME3(with a list of choices) but it was much more climactic and more connected to the story so far/earlier commitments in the game; also the main ending is not dat big a deal in most Obs games with epilogues for most other characters, places etc. Witcher 3 and Mass Effect 2 endings are better examples of "how it should be" IMO. In Witcher 3 the ending started to shape itself well before and last mission/latest dialogue choices wasn't even capable to change anything. In ME2, both the last mission and loyalty missions -at any point in the game, however binary they may be - shaped the ending. Aaand I remembered Witcher 2 now that I think about endings; most decisions at any point in the game mattered in the end, it was more complex than either W3 or Mass Effect 2 endings despite more linear shape of the game, too bad the ending states got streamlined to death for W3 and for this reason (now returning to derailment of topic #1: save-import) if I'm to replay Witcher, I'd replay an individual game(most likely either W1 or W3) not the whole series unlike Mass Effect. Witcher 2 lost its value; it was a big F'ing prologue where kings died and [seemingly] big deal and complex decisions made which made my mouth watered just to think about how all dat would play out in the coming war but it got reduced to a ground zeroes level to an mgs v.

Its certainly additional workload for the devs, maybe restrictive in some ways but as I said above Bioware handled it well with Mass Effect(not so well with DAO with all dat retconning and unrelated stories between games) and the infamous Mass Effect 3's greatest moments were those connected story arcs concluding, And in Obs' latest work these pre-decisions implemented even when there is no previous game :D It can become a mess if it isn't done well. If its done well, it adds to the value of the franchise/to each game f.i. If I'm to replay Mass Effect, I replay the whole series not just the latest game.

I don't agree. Mostly its not a practice for us(gamers) but to get new players and in PoE 2's case it wouldn't help much. PoE 2 won't be a lot different than PoE / PoE won't feel dated when PoE 2 comes out and for anyone who's interested in this type of game, PoE 1 won't be a burden. I can understand f.i. Witcher 3 should feel like standalone cos its the witcher series' first appearance on PS or its made less hardcore so more people will play it etc. plus the time between W3 and W2(If you play W2 after W3, it should feel a bit dated). But still its for companies to sell more copies, not for the loyal followers of a series. Actually its worse for the loyal players most of the time(like CDPR's made W2s different endings meaningless in W3). I expect continuation story in PoE 2 with PoE 1's choices imported either with save-files and/or Kotor2/Witcher3 style in game choices or preferably in some form of Tyranny's conquest feature. To this date the series which save-import handled the best is Mass Effect; every game impacted the other enough(sometimes on crazy levels: ME3's tuchanka) to be meaningful. Too bad dat ending ruined it.

Yep that's better. Especially if the tech of the world moved forward till whenever the next watcher's time. Equal tech to around 1700 IRL should be good for ships & islands themed game. Prolly won't happen tho, given that Eder is in the concepts. ıt'll pick up right where we left off. At most couple years later, with the same watcher.
-
Why not? Watcher read a dead captain's soul and decided that life of a captain is the way to live. Maybe a pirate captain with that Island being Nassau-like. I like our watcher. The game should have been called The Watcher. The Watcher 2: Wild Sails. Only other alternative I'll accept as our character instead of The Watcher is backpack baby. That baby have seen stuff no other baby did.

Leviathan. Polpovir Spoiler for PoE 2? Seems like more complex drowners(man-sized, strength in numbers) rather than a "legendary" monster. In other news: https://www.instagram.com/p/BN-ZCIwgStL/ So is the next stronghold a ship or an island? Or both? -not that a wrecked slaver ship full of dynamites in the middle of an island.

Kickstarter question for devs
Quillon replied to Grimo88's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Was there an unplayable race/kith which is not "extinct" nor too rare? If no, maybe stretch goals did shape the available races whether playable ooor playable -
Yeah it was Chris. What is that "scandal" did Sawyer cause? If I remember correctly gamebyro never performed well with ps3 either with Oblivion or FO3/Vegas. Don't know about Skyrim.

Guess Obs laid off Sawyer too https://twitter.com/jesawyer/status/806499816180158464

https://twitter.com/ChrisAvellone/status/806277756317102081 New batch of layoffs? or why CA retweeting a tweet from 2012...

Then its safe to assume the production quality will be comparable DAO? Fortune favours the bold and Obs were never bold in their approach to making games, they even went to KS as a last resort. The other independent companies who are thriving atm made their own engines as early as possible and usually own the IPs of the games they are making. Maybe Avellone is right about Obs' been looking to get bought out, maybe this was always in their minds as they've worked/are still working for publishers without trying anything on their own for so long & ditching their onyx engine easily for a cheaper rented one for "PoE"; they've made DS3(3D) and SP:TSoT(2D) with Onyx, and PoE is 2D+3D... : p

In the stream Josh said 15th or 16th century europe or 19th century america for that game. If he gets to make it, hope he goes for 19th century america, the later the better.

Tyranny's pacing is very bad after act 1. Too many same template quests not to mention the goal of each act is the same and I expected to be required to report to Tunon after each act, maybe some more court intrigue could have helped with the pacing but no; he calls for us once after act 1 and one more towards the end.

While conquest is a neat feature, I feel like its unnecessary. Almost all rpg sequels doesn't even handle save-import well and you're basically importing some pre-state in conquest. Let's say there'll be Tyranny 2; there'll be ZERO chance for a "good" save import there with all the conquest choices and the choices you made in actual game. I'd have rather directed that effort into making "origins" or better; being able to start the game in different hubs since acts are basically the content around one hub(CDPR tried to do this in Witcher 3; after white orchard/prologue there could have been choices to continue the game in Skellige or Novigrad besides Velen, they had to cut it duo to time constraints) which provides a lot better replayability and do the "conquest" in the possible sequel(like PoE 2) instead of a save import. And one critism for conquest itself that getting locked out of choices; why lock the player out of those choices(cos he didn't go there) while you already implemented the effects in the game? If you open them up there'll still be variety(cos you're choosing between disfavoured&scarlet in each camp), a lot more so in fact. Not wanna see in PoE 2: - Combos: they look cool but they are unnecessary and would be more so on top of all the abilities/spells in PoE. - 1 to 0 action bar: I want to see all the abilities one character have, together. - Classless system: I can't make a PoE-Barbarian-like character in Tyranny with the ability trees in it, I'd rather have classes and choose barbarian. I wouldn't care if I can make different "classes" in a classless system tho. I am neutral about spell creation since I don't care. I agree with better story, characters, involved companions etc : p
